Dear Members This will be our last Newsletter for 2016; the year is coming to an end. We hope it has been a good one for you; even though the local winter was quite cool and wet compared with the usual Australian conditions. Slowly but surely summer is coming- we have enjoyed some warmer days already! One event in the Welfare calendar is still waiting for you. Our Christmas celebration in Club Tivoli will take place on the 8th December. We start at 2 o’clock. We hope you will like the program we have put together for you: some singing, some speeches, a raffle, and coffee and cake await you. We are looking forward to seeing many of you on that day. Your contribution for the day would be $5. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for their loyalty and we can only hope that they will continue to support us with their membership in future. The membership payments are the only regular income we can rely on. But of course they are not enough to keep our office and our events going. Therefore special thanks go to all those who supported us during the year with donations or included us in their last will. Last but not least, I would like to thank all those volunteers who give us their knowledge, their talents and their time free of charge. It is getting harder and harder to find those people, but we rely on their support. May the festive season bring joy to your hearts and a good start to the New Year. All the best from, Linde Mohr

The History of Glühwein In Germany a Christmas market without Glühwein would be unthinkable. During the time of Advent it passes constantly over the counter – Glühwein! But who got the idea to heat up the wine? In ancient Greece they had the idea already to add spices into the wine. About 2000 years later the Romans introduced wine to Europe. In those days wine was still very sour. Therefore they mixed honey, different spices and herbs as well as fruit into the wine, to make it more palatable. That not only helped the taste but also the longevity of the wine, which was increased by the sugar content of the honey. The recipe for what we call today ‘Glühwein’ was first found in the script of the Roman gourmet and author Aurelius Apicius. The “conditum paradoxum” (antique Roman spiced wine) was cooked with honey and spiced with saffron, bay leaf, pepper and dates. Later, in medieval times, the refined wine became a real delicacy. Taste and quantity offered to a guest decided to a large extend the social reputation of the host. Even in medieval times the spiced wine was drunk cold, much later came the idea to heat up the wine. Nowadays we still use more or less the same spices as the old Greeks and Romans to produce this delicacy: that is anise, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, lemon rind and orange rind. Other favourite drinks during Advent are ’Feuerzangen Bowle ‘(Fire tongs punch) and Met -Honey wine – for children there is children’s punch. Glühwein Recipe: 200ml water, 500ml red wine, 4 cloves, 1 stick of cinnamon, 1 lemon rind only, 3TS sugar Preparation: Cook spices and water (or wine) at low temperature for 5 minutes, and then add sugar to dissolve. Add the red wine at high temperature but do not let it boil. Before serving remove the herbs.

It's Christmas Time

Towards the end of November, You start to feel it in the air. Christmas time is coming, As it does but once a year.

So many things to get done,

Presents, decorations and more. This rushing season has begun, Sometimes feeling like a chore.

But once things get done,

You can relax a little more. Sit back and take in the season,

All the favourite things you adore.

Enjoy all the music

And the calmness that it brings. Sing about Rudolph,

And the three wise kings.

Let the light aluminate, Your house, yard and tree There is magic in the air,

I think we'd all agree
