Development of PBFD Vaccine For Use
In Australia
The Department of Animal Health is doing well with its research into PBFD. Shane Raidal's hemagglutination and hemagglutination-inhibition tests have been validated and are being used as effective epidemiological (and diag- nostic) tools. The Department has been involved in the development of vaccines for the domestic fowl and turkey, and has considerable expertise in the formulation of double emul-
sions. The vaccine for PBFD is safe and protective in cockatoos (galahs, Sul- phur-crested, Major Mitchell's, Red- tailed Black, White-tailed Black, Gang Gang). It produces an immune re- sponse similar to that produced by Fruend's-adjuvanted vaccine, but does not adversely affect the bird. Dose-re- sponse trials are currently being per- formed in galahs, followed by one with Sulphur-crested Cockatoos. Goals are to sell the product (in Australia) for cockatoos in June 1994 and to validate the vaccine for small psittacine birds in 1994. The Federal Australian Govern- ment requires considerable validation studies for registration, even with a vaccine for a non-food animal. They will not issue "provisional" or "tempo- rary" registration.
