SKEET CARNIVAL 8-11 JUNE 1990

The Northern Territory Clay Target Association held a com- bined trap and skeet carnival at Katherine Gun Club over the Queen's Birthday weekend This was the first time that we have ,un a combined carnival and it was done a s a trial to try and revive Interest in both shooting disciplines The experiment worked and combined carnivals are likely lo b e a feature of the Territorv for at ieast the next lew years.

Over 50 shooters turned up which is a tremendous turn-out con- sidering our numbers and the distances that shooters had to travel. For those not familiar with the Territory, the nearest club to Katherine is Darwin, some 330 km away. Shooters travelled the vieli over 3000 km round trip from Yuiara and Alice Springs to b e ihere and the Gove contingent travelled the arduous 4WD 1200-odd km round journey across Arnhem Land. I think that even the most cynical observer would have to agree that this is indeed dedication to the sport.

Thanks lo 1.e ie:rific effor! mcoe by ihe Karnerine Gun Club in creoar:rr; ihe yo.!r.ds a n i proviiing ihe '~sual legendary 1:aiher.ne ~osp.ia:iiy Tne bar serv.ce and fcoz prov.ded by the ladies was superb but particular thanks a r e due to Jim Bitossi and his firm. Dee Jay Engineering, Ian (Slug) Winstanley and Bronte Evans Without their efforts there would not have been a carnival Dee Jay Engineering put so much effort into the preparations lor the carnival that it became our major sponsor.

A ieature of the carnival was the keen competition between the lunior shooters which is an encouraging sign for the sport Chris Warren and Adam Brown cornered the market in pocket knives with one or the other winning junior titles throughout the weekend

This was also the first year that wa ran skeei do?lbles but ihe event me1 wilh m!xed react!ons Its !ncIusion 'was !ustified by !he fact thal a is shol in :he nalional championships bul a lo1 of shooters

0 Top End President Barry Munt enjoyed his weekend.

Thanks are also due to our other sponsors ANZ Bank Katherine Branch, Red Valley Tours, and Phil Grove for donating the combined carnival h!gh gun sash

The notorious background at Katherine collected more than a few scalps a s evidenced in the scores but that was more than compensated by the weather and the hospitality I can honestly say that it was one of the happiest shoots I have attended with no dramas or major grizzles Good stuff

The skeet got olf to an early start on Friday morning with John Doyle (nice to have you back 1 D) winning the overall and A Grade in the 501 Carnivai Championship Gove President Greg

regarded it a s more of a novelty event. Anyway. it was won overall by Mt Isa shooter and regular visitor to the NT, Mick McGdI. e Handicap winner Victor Padovan.

Sunday dawned (almost) with the stngle barrel eye-opener with Peter Hoare, Mick Harding and Ray Oakley picking up money. Darwin President Ken Selwood won the single barrel champion- shio with Mick Hardino and S. Savvas takino out B and C Grades. ~a;vas, a relatively new shooter, also had agood weekend and a surely destined for B Grade shortly

Well known South Australian shooter Ron Smith won the Sot double barrel championship with the only possible shot in the event. Victor Padovan and S. Savvas winning Z and C Grades. There were some disappointing scores in the postal shoot, poss- ibly a result of being shot at the end of a long day. The S-man shoulder to shoulder team ended up being Phil Grove. Ken Sel- wood, Doug Chan, Victor Padovan and Jim Bitossi.

The handiap and double barrel was shot on the final day with rival juniors Adam Brown and Chris Warren both picking u p money in the eye-opener and Greg Bateson right behind them. Victor Padovan won the State Handicap, Bronte Evans was second and Mick McGill third.

The double rise sorted many out with fairly low scores all around. Ron Smith won the sash and Tony Brown and Russell Mc- Kenzie winning B and C Grades respectively. Darwin junior shooter Brett Hall came second in C Grade, which is a promising start to his career.

0 Trap High Gun winner Ken Selwood here collecting the State Single Barrel sash and tmphy.

Congratulations and thanks agatn to Katherine Gun Club for a terrliic weekend and a most successful combined skeet and trap carnival. There is no doubt that the honourable sport of clay busting is alive and well in the Territory. Incidentally, if the NTCTA ever gets enough money Jim, we will hire a D9 to flatten that bloody ridge for you!

SCHOOL SHOOTERS LEARN SAFETY

Viewers of the ABC's '7.30 Report' on 11 July were given an in- accurate picture of the firearm safety programs in our secondary schools.

Presenter John Jost implied these programs are a recent pheno- menon, and reporter Jill Singer did nothing to correct that impres- sion.

In fact, target shooting has been available in our schoolssince the 1690s. About 30 years ago, however, the emphasis began to change. Safety training became the primary focus, with target shooting seen as a necessarv adjunct. . ~

Necessary? Yes, for the same reason that students in pre-driver education courses spend partottheir time driving cars: safe habits cannot be developed without handson ex~erience.

1111 Singer said students are "being coached to become crack shots". That's nonsense. The traps (clay target throwers) are ad- lusted to ensure easy shots and training an expert marksperson takes years.

Though there's nothing wrong in acquiring skills that can lead as far as Olympic competition, the in-school courses aren't designed for that purpose. .

Shifiing the National Office from the South to the North Island did not sit well with many South Island shooters at the time as they had an inbuilt suspicion of anything that went on north of the Waimaka- riri River.

The Council decided to have Sid attend all Federation meetings as one of the NZCTA delegates and this led to the Association g a i ~ n g considerable support in coaching and finance for its ISU team nominees. Sid also rose to be President of the National Shoot- ing Federation and was in that position during a most successful South Pacific Regional Championship in Christchurch in 1984.

1990 has been one of the high points of Sid's clay target involve- ment with his serving on the shotgun jury at the, Commonwealth Games in Auckland and beina involved with the Oceania FITASC World Cup even1 more recently at Taupo. The jury ~nvolvement has led to htm betng the flrst holder of an A Grade UIT Shotgun Judges Badge In New Zealand

Sid is leaving the Association in a sound financial position and with systems in place that should make the transition to a new Secreta~y fairly straight forward.

COACHING CORNER

The training and re-training of coaches is delivered through "approved coordinators" who may be other coaches, TAFE colleges, State Sports Departments or the staff of ASC/ACC.

Coaches, once formally trained, are "accredited by the Austra- lian Coaching Council, which issues a badge and an ID card to each coach, for a small fee.

It has been suggested to me that there are some members of the clay target fraternity who are interested in becoming coaches but

Saturday morning and things were very slow. By 10 o'clock only It be fair to say that a today is generally an 35 shooters had registered and five of these only for Saturday. However, steps are undernay' shooters in the Central Zone as the highlight of their shooting year. nationally, to improve the status and professionalism of coaches. With over $2000 worth of trophies, sashes and badges and also ARE THERE DIFFERENT SORTS OF COACHES? Zone Jackets for Zone Team members, it is very hard to explain

Yes. Broadly, we have 'developmental coaches', who introduce W ~ Y the anendance was so poor. people to the sport and who work with the more recreational The Zone held its AGM on Saturday night and Noel Deeley was shooters, and "high performance coaches" who work with "high elected President, Bob Meaney as Vice President and Zone Handi- performance" shooters. It is useful also to consider that there are capper, Gaye Bums re-elected Secretary/Treasurer, Peter Field, administrators in the coaching fraternity who organise courses, Jim Storch and Noel Deeley as Zone Delegates and Ray Meaney as who plan coaching development. who ensure that standards are Zone Coach. The Zone Committee expressed their firm belief in maintained, or who manage teams competing interstate and inter- Zone shooting, and pledged support for President Noel Deeley to nationally. WOULD I MAKE A GOOD COACH? All who attended enjoyed the weekend's shooting and social- ising but unfortunately the Zone did not have any financial success. Established coaches tend to be outgoing, good communicators,

decision-makers, leaaers, and supportive of authority, 1f you match Results: see Shoot Rep0* that profile and are Drepared to work, to study and to re-qualify periodically, you are looking good.

IS THERE A JOB FOR ME? It is pointless and costly to train coaches for whom there is no

work. If there 1s no group or potential group for a coach to work with, there is no point in appointinga coach and the coach aspirant w111 not be able to requalify or to progress. Therefore, discuss with vour existing Club/Zone/State Coaches a Possible role for vour- self. At the very least, one ofthem may needan apprentice/heiper. which is an ideal way for you to start out in the trade.

DO I HAVE TO BE AN ELITE SHOOTER? No. Obviously, however, a high performance shooter who

becomes a coach has certain initial advantages.

IS THERE A COACHING STRUCTURE? Yes. Standards are set by the Australian Coaching Council(ACC)

which franchises the system through National Sporting Organisa- tions (NSO) of which ACTA is one. The ACC is a division of the Aus tralian Sports Commiesion (ASC) in Canberra, the body which co- ordinates, represents and funds Australian sportsmen and sports- women.

REDCLIFFE CITY CLAY TARGET CLUB

Hi Shooters, take a deep breath. "Yes, now IT'S OFFICIAL' our Grand Opening Shoot 1s to be held on the 3rd and 4th November, 1990. A Saturday half day and Sunday full day shoot.

We have a lhtrd :rap layo.1 to ~111d and complete oy then, but at Redcltiie City !?at isonly r. mnor dclail for a Club ltlat slaned wdh three active members and a svramp, because nowwe are 150 mem- bers strong and only half a swamp. I think you all know just what happened to the other halt

Sunday the 1st July, was a ripper. Fair tore my cheeks apart. John and Gerry in the office gloating over squad sheets and Jim, our President, walking on cloud nine. Forty-six shooters turned up to shoot for $480 worth of cash and trophies and with the weather dry and a slight westerly wind made for a good day's shooting.

Members from the Showman's Gun Club raided the kitchen. home made apple pie and cream seemed to be the order of the day but there again anything that could be eaten was given the same treatment.

You have to keep an eye on Robbie Dale. Not only can he eat but he can shoot as well, making a gaod job of the points event with a beautiful 75-75.

The following week three of us took Gympie on for the day. Yes, we dragged along the old bloke from Billabong Motors, Jim Beer, one of our sponsors from our June Shoot. Little did Gympie know what was in store, no bookies up there, so Jim had to shoot for fun, taking out the overall for the major event ofthe day. Now we have to find a new rlng in.

Gary Redmond, a real champ when it comes to Junior shwters. donated a reloading press to the Club for juniors to leam to do their own thing, under supervision of course.

Many thanks Gary - that press is already doing a mighty job. FISHER AND PAYKEL have come to the party in a big way. A big

way being a Fisher and Paykel fridge/freezer worth over a thou- sand dollars. Now that's some sponsorship. It's too big for one shooter to take home so maybe we had better make it the raffle for our official opening shoot.

Tampico Importers Ply Ltd jumped in to sponsor a couple of events for the next month. There is no twisting arms with these blokes and I only need a very small stick, but if all else fails I cany an onion in my pocket.

Ti11 next time, keep both eyesopen. JB AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET NEWS - SEPTEMBER 1990

THE SPORT OF CLAYTARGET

By GEORGE BlGGS

Australia's first registered clay target club was The Nobel Clay Bird Club. The club fist came into being through the efforts of a small band of enthusiastic clay target shooters who in 1926 decided that they would prefer to shoot clay birds rather than live birds. So aAer several months of fun shooting in a quarry at the back of LC.L, a factory in West Footscray, a Melbourne suburb, it was decided that a club should be formed. History was made on Friday September 9. 1927 when at a meeting held at 380 Collins Street, Melbourne, it was decided to form Australia's first clay pigeon shooting club. It was to be known as the Nobel Clay Bird Club.

Prior to the Nobel Club being formed, small groups of shooters in various places would run what could be called fun shoots, using more or less their own rules of competition. One of the more prominent of these clubs was the Victoria Clay Bird Club. This club used a piece of land adjacent to a market garden in Bentleigh, a south eastern suburb of Melbourne. Nobel and Victoria clubs were amally two pioneer clubs, they merged in October 1939 and used the Nobel grounds. Shooting continued until several months after War was declared.

In the years between 1927 and 1936 numerous clay bird clubs were formed. They were affiliated with what was known as the Gun Clubs Association of Victoria. This was a live bird shooting body with headquarters at the original Melbourne Gun Club at Tottenham.

1936 was the year when Australia really began to shoot clay targets in an organised manner. Up to this time clay target shooting was controlled by the Live Bird Association and for obvious reasons it was apparent that we had to control our own type of trap shooting.

At a meeting called to discuss the matter, it was decided to proceed in this direction. It was agreed that the name of the Association would be "Clay Target Shooter's Association of Vic- toria". Officials were elected as follows - President: Mr H.G. James Vlce Presidents. Colonel C.W. Thompson and ~ e s s r s J.M. Wllson and L. Bemam Secretary Colonel Thompson: Treasurer: Mr H Benison Handsappers: Messrs E.J. Parow. H G. James. G. Townsend; Committee: R W. Delaney. A P. Cook. J . Benison with wwer to co-opt two others. This was now the beginning of clay target shooting nationally

HOW IT BEGAN We can go back well over 100 years to the beginning of trap

shooting, somewhere around the year 1840. At this time trap shoot- ing consisted of live pigeon shooting only. It was during the years 1860 through to 1886 that live pigeon shooting became popular throughout England and the Continent. Special pigeons were bred for this type oftrapshooting, they were known as the Blue Rock - small in size and very fast flying.

Prize moneys ofrh~neen hundred and founeen hundred pounds were not uncommon in the years around 1878 Excellent scores were also put up by several famous English Amerlcan and Con- tinental shooters.

Some very interesting information on live pigeon shooting is described by W.W. Greener in his book "The Gun and Its Development", published in England in 1900. He goes on to describe how live pigeon shooting was conducted in the mid-1860s and at a later date, trap shooting at glass balls filled with feathers, were thrown from a rotatins trao..The alass balls filled with smoke were later invented in ~ m e r i i a andproved popular when live pigeons were not available, oras,in some states, live pigeon shoots were dlegal.

Mr Greener describ?s how a Captaln H Bogardus. the great Amerlcan wlngshot, made amatch against time in December 1879

1. Before the introduction of clay targets around the turn of the century glass balls were developed and made fashionable in America by a Captain Bogardus. In England catapults were used to spring the balls, but in America spring traps were invented. Cards standard trap shown in the centre of the drawing is described as the latest Americar. trap, it will project one or two balls in any direction or it will rotate, throwing balls in a direction impossible to foresee. The balls were often filled with coloured smoke or feathers so as to be seen when broken. The balls were also chequered to prevent the shot glancing off.

Illustration from the book of W. W Greener

and succeeded in breaking 5500 glass balls in seven hours and twentv minutes. The misses numbered 356. The Caotain used an ~ , ~~~~~~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Engllsh gun with two pa~rs of barrels. During the match the Captam changed the barrels no less than 55 llmes

Clay larger trap sho3ting as we know it today staned to become popular before the turn ofthe century By the year 1900 the Ameri- can trap shooter vras gerilng himsell geared up to shoot in a b ~ g way.

2. Artificial Flying Pigeon - Thls machlne was ~ntroduced as a machine which the patentees rhought would supersede the glass ball traps. A skilful driver is however, necessary to get good sport from the birds, for if the driving-handle is turned slowlysnd regu- larly, a slow gentle sweep is given to the pigeon thatno'tyro could miss. The pigeon is either iron, whitewashed, o r of a wire cage. having inside a balloon, which keeps the two wings spread until caused to collapse by the penetration of shot. , , , .

It was not until the mid-1920s, after World War 1, that clay target shooting was introduced into Australia - more or less from the English Association and with the help of Eley Ammunition Ca.. who in fact established the first clay target club adjacent to their factory at Tottenham, a western suburb of Melbourne, this club was known as the Nobel Gun Club.

it was a very modest beginning to our sport. Eley Ammunition Company conhnued to sponsor the club for several years. During this time an association was formed to control the sport, it was known as the Australian Clay Pigeon R a p Shooting Association (ACPTSA), formed in 1936.

The outbreak of World War 2 in September 1939 brought to a halt the growth of clay target shooting in Australia. However, four or five clubs did hang on and managed to shoot at intervals throughout most parts of the war whenever it became possible to obtain targets or shells, which was not often. The Blackburn Gun Club, formed in 1936, was based on the private property of Jack Bryant, in Holland Road. Blackbum. This was one of the clubs able to operate during the War.

During the early months of the War, units ofthe United States Air Force were often eniertained for shooting practice (clay target uractice was a part of Air Gunner trainina in those davs). Dave Watson was President and Aub Johnston, Secretary. At a later date the name of the club was changed to Australian Gun Club and was for a number of years the venue of Australian National Champ~onships, until they were rotated around other States a s the sport developed on a wider National scale.

0 Melbourne Olympic Games 1956 - 1st & 3rd placegetters G. Rossinl of ltaly 1st-score 195-200 and A. Giceri of Italy 3rd with a score of 188-200. Second place went to A. Smelczynski of Poland with 190-200. Australia's 2-man team comprising Jack Bryant and Clem Mudford were placed 9th and 20th with scores of 176 and 164-200.

the cost of sending teams away each year becomes quite a finan- cial burden. However. Olympic style shooting is making big pro- gress in countries closer to Australia, like Singapore. Thailand. Korea. Japan, China, New Zealand and Noumea. Because of this, it is now envisaged that more frequent exchange of shooters will occur leading to greater competition experience and less travel- ling expense.

Standaro American sryle !rap and skeel shcot.ng remains 'he most popular in lhlscounlry due lo the fact that 11 is no'asdifficult lo shoot for the average persm who 1s no1 internat~onally amb~t~ous and just wants a pleasant Saturday afternoon's enjoyable shooting and get together with friends.

Clay target shooting in Australia has come quite a long way since those early days in 1927, when a group of keen shotgunners got together to lay the foundations for a sport that has grown and spread to all States over the years.

Om snort is now oroanised and controlled bv the Australian - 7 . ~ ~ ~- ~~- -~ o ~ ~ ~ ~ - ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~

FIFTY YEARS AGO The Commonwealth Mixed Blrds Championship of 1940 was

originally listed for decision on the Cambewell Club's grounds at North Balwyn on the date March 2. However, it was found that the date practically coincided with the Victorian Duck Opening, so the club sought Association permission to defer the event. The associa- tion agreed and a new date, June 22, was arranged.

It was also mentioned that "Due to the War" there would be no International Match in 1940.

Jack Bryant Snr of Blackburn, whose name appears regularly about lhisperiod, wasapparenlly atthezenlihol his form It isnoled !ha! he successfullv defended hls Commonwealth Double Barrel Title. The event was shot on the Nobel grounds, then at Bentleigh. Five tied, each with 24/25. In the shoot-ofiVic Fankhanser was first fall out. finishing fifth with 28/30. Fred Burns and C. Lancaster were next out, each with scores of 33/35. Bryant ultimately won 39/40 from Reg Ilett (Harrison) 38/40. Bryant used only three seconds in the contest at 25 targets from 20 yards.

At !he firs! open shoo1 conducted by the old Warr~bee Club on the Werribee Racecourse, Bryan1 again wor: the main event, at double rtse on lhls occssion scoring ihe moderale rolal of 8/15 pairs to win from Texas (C. Lancaster).

FORTY YEARS AGO At a Griffith (NSW) fixture 106 shooters attended. The club intro-

duced an unusual scheme for arranging team competition. Each competitor paid in 2/6 and names where then drawn in teams of four. The winning combination comprised Ted Matthews (Bowna). E. Albert(Barellan), E. Fromholtz(Griffith Secretary) and Owen Mc- Loughlan of Cohuna (Vic.). This type of event proved very popular and it could well be tried out again. Dinky (Bill Catlin) and W. Wager(Me1bourne) cut the first two places in a 5@pound Handicap at a Holbrook meeting in NSW.

In a Hobart shoot no fewer than 23 of the 40 entrants in a double barrel event carded possibles. The miss out rule applied in the shoot-off which went to J.M. Tyquin, now of Brisbane. on the 29th round.

The Commonwealth Skeet Championship of 1950 was shot at Leeton by the thenlocalclub. Nearly 60entrieswere received. The t~tle went to Narrandera sportsman Tom Whillans. Newton Thomas was runner-up.

Alexandra ( V s ) - Three traps viere used lor the iirsl time and everything wen! w~thout a hltch or hold-up thanks to Ron Hedger his father Manse and son Arthur. Night conditions were perfect with C. Dean in top single barrel form and Tup Pedersen providing the thrills for the crowd with some excellent second barrel saves. Over the night events Claude Dean shot 100 straight without use of one second barrel. Newton Thomas was in his usual form and gave advice to young shooters. Visitors from all States except WA con- tested including Frank Morton from Alice Springs who was a long way from home. The Victorian Double Barrel Championship pro- duced a splendid exhibition of skill in the tie shoot which brought success to Ray Parker of Colac 100/100. Both Ray Parker and Fred Shearer recorded 100 to 150 breaks. Ray is a 24-yarder and deserved great credit for 153 straight. The big event for the station wagon produced records. At the halfway mark. 61 possibles were on the board to share the sweep. Sixty-four shot the possible in the second I5 and a record 25 possibles lined up for the tie shoot. This continued for three and a half hours and a gallery of at last 1000 watched with keen interest and much appreciated silence through- out. Six shooters eventually decided to dtvide. Flnal presentation was made to High Gun winner Athol Miller of Apsley who was decorated with the club sash for the fine score of 103/105.

VALE CLUB BADGES J.R. BUSMBY

It is with much sadness that we report the passing away of John Bushby, aged 75 years at the Narrandera District Hospital on April 2.

Rob who has been out of shooting lor some time due to his illness, will be remembered by many fellow shooters for his keen competi- lion which honoured him with eight Commonwealth titles, eight State titles and 24 district titles.

Rob served approximately twenty years as the secretary for the Narrandera Clay Target Club.

Deepest sympathy to hiswifeJean and family.

BRUCE BOYD Members of the Wangaratta Clay Target Club were deeply

saddened by the death of Bruce Boyd on 25th July, 1990following a heart attack two weeks earlier.

A quiet man with a dry sense of humour, Bruce was a keen skeet shooter who served on the committee for the past four years.

Bruce's commitment to working bees, committee meetings and his willingness to assist on skeet days will be greatly missed.

We extend our sympathy iohis wife. Bonnie and family on this sad occasion.
