DAY 2 ARTICLE

The Day the News Fails

News is true, and the news media only reports facts. That’s the general notion and how the news media became so influential. Something happened a few months ago, and it changed the view.

Asiana Airlines Flight 214 from Inchon, South Korea, crashed at San Francisco International Airport in the United States on July 6, 2013. The Boeing 777-200ER carrying 307 passengers was on final approach to land. The crash cost lives of three passengers and injured 181 people. KTVU, a local news station in the Bay Area near the airport, reported the names of the pilots: “Sum Ting Wong,” “Wi Tu Lo,” “Ho Lee Fuk,” and “Bang Ding Ow.” The names turned out to be racist jokes: Cpt. Something Wrong, Way too law, Holy f**k. (“Bang Ding Ow” may refer to sounds relating to a crash.). KTVU made a public apology and fired several employees allegedly involved in the misreport. KTVU also said in a statement that an official from The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) had confirmed the names to them. The NTSB is a U.S. government agency responsible for civil transportation

accident investigation. It later announced termination of a summer intern over the incident. Competition among news people to get information out before anyone else is mounting up. They often struggle whether to sacrifice the absolute accuracy over being the first to report the news. What would you do if you were a reporter, the person in charge of the newsroom, or an ordinary citizen? Who’s responsible for damages caused by inaccurate reports? WORD CHECK UP

DAY 4 DEBATE

Korea should abandon its policies regarding Internet censorship Internet censorship is a divisive and controversial subject. At the heart of the matter is a classic dilemma for governments and citizens alike. This dilemma is the constant struggle between the promotion of democracy and the care for safety and security. Censorship in Korea has primarily occurred on the Internet. Certain websites that host inappropriate images and also websites that contain information that is sympathetic to North Korea are blocked. Recently, countries like Great Britain have also introduced similar policies designed to protect the youth from seeing inappropriate material. Policy makers have argued that these types of policies are good for the public and protect individuals. However, critics have argued that these types of policies are incompatible with democracy which holds individual rights, such as the freedom of speech, to be sacred. What do you think?

Pros: Korea is a democratic country.

Therefore, Korea should abandon any

policy that restricts the freedoms of its

citizens. This means that Korea should

abandon its current policies regarding

Internet censorship.

Internet censorship restricts individual’s

access to information and prevents

individuals from asserting their freedom of speech. This type of policy can only

do harm to citizens who may not be able to trust a government that practices

censorship.

Furthermore, citizens should be trusted to protect themselves on the Internet.

There are tools available for parents to protect their children from inappropriate

content and the decision should be left to families instead of being decided for

them by the government.

Cons: The government must trust its citizens to make the right decision.

Instead of practicing Internet censorship, the government should educate its

citizens not to visit dangerous or inappropriate websites. By simply censoring

this website, many citizens do not learn why these websites are dangerous.

This means that censorship is ultimately ineffective at protecting citizens and

may even be counterproductive if citizens find a way around the policies. In

conclusion, Korea should abandon its policies regarding Internet censorship

because they are ineffective and restrict democracy.
