Page 2: gavelhouse.com Australia auction closes tomorrow...(Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill. The three-year-old son of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), who was sent off the $2.10 favourite, beat the

Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) before he tackles the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill on 23 September.

The colt was quickly away from barrier nine and settled at the back by Blake Shinn, with Speed Street (Al Maher) cutting out the early running. After running wide, Shinn switched Pariah to the rail.

As the field came off the turn Shinn asked the three-year-old for his effort and he kicked off the turn in taking fashion to lead with 100 metres left to travel, eventually scoring a comfortable victory over Chauffeur.

Co-trainer Paul Snowden was impressed with the James Harron Bloodstock-raced colt’s first up victory and said he could even be aimed for a tilt in The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on 14 October.

“It’s very pleasing to see a horse like him come back the way he did,” said Snowden.

“You look at him, he’s just a picture of health. He’s still got a lot of improvement left to come and it was soft on the line.

“Blake [Shinn] didn’t punish him in anyway, he looked after him and rode him really well.

“He’ll run in the Run To The Rose and then obviously the Golden Rose. Probably after that 1400 metre run we’ll determine what avenue we take with him, if we do press onto the mile or look at The Everest or freshen up for the Coolmore.

“They’re certainly good things to be thinking about.“The Golden Rose is his main target thus far, hopefully we can tick that box

and then we can really think about what his future holds,” Snowden continued.

Shinn was equally pleased with the colt’s reappearance yesterday and said he had always rated the three-year-old.

“He’s certainly on his way and has a lot of improvement to come, we are just fortunate enough to have him in our stable,” said Shinn.

“We’ve always had the belief that he was a top-liner and he narrowly missed the Blue Diamond, but we really thought he had made nice progression to a three-year-old.

“His work had been good, his trials had been great, we had a bit of challenge there from barrier nine, but the guys Lindsay Murphy and Chris Toogood presented this track very fairly today and just had to go out there and have confidence in my horse.

“He gave me a lovely ride and as the race panned out I got more confident, just had to extricate my way out at the turn and I know he’s got a great turn of foot and he delivered today.

“Peter [Snowden] left me with an open mind and I was really pleased with that, he didn’t hit the gates that hard so I just elected to ride him quiet and back his ability.

“I was able to find the rail and got on the back of Jorda and when the runs appeared I took them, at the top of the straight I was very confident.”

Pariah (3 c Redoute's Choice - Secluded by Hussonet) was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $700,000 at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Arrowfield Stud draft and he is the first foal by the three time-winning mare Secluded (Hussonet), who was trained by Paul Messara.

Her second foal, another colt by the Arrowfield-based stallion Redoute’s Choice, was purchased by Tim Stakemire on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $2,500,000 from the Arrowfield Stud draft

Secluded herself is out of the Listed winner Cloister (Marauding), making Pariah a three quarter brother to the multiple Group One winner Melito (Redoute’s Choice). Cloister produced five other winners from seven foals to race including the stakes-placed pair Across The Moon (Stratum) and Sister Declan (Quest For Fam), while she is also the grandam of the Listed winner and Group One-placed You’re So Good (Savabeel).

Meanwhile Pariah’s third dam is the Group Three-winning mare Pampas Fire (Prince True), who is a half-sister to the multiple Group One winner and sire Zeditave (The Judge) and Group Three winners Square Deal (The Judge), Alannon (Noalcoholic) and Zedagal (The Judge).

In 2015 the Reavill Farm-bred Secluded, was a $525,000 purchase by Paul Messara at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of her breeder, was covered by Redoute’s Choice again but slipped and then missed to him again last year.

Addictive Nature Wins Ming Dynasty

After a brave front running performance Addictive Nature (Savabeel) managed to fight off a late charge by Assimilate (Sebring) to win the Ming Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill yesterday and in the process provide the Waikato Stud-based sire Savabeel (Zabeel) with his 65th stakes winner.

The Bjorn Baker-trained Addictive Nature, who was sent off the $3.10 favourite, defeated the previously unbeaten colt Assimilate ($5) by a nose with another length and three quarters back to Astoria (Medaglia d’Oro) ($11) in third.

Addictive Nature was last seen running second behind Shogun Sun (Written Tycoon) over 1200 metres at Randwick on 5 August and he broke well from barrier six and was sent to the lead by Tim Clark and had Runaway (Manhattan Rain) for company, meanwhile Assimilate settled in last by Hugh Bowman.

Sunday 27 August 2017 Addictive Nature Wins Ming Dynasty

As the field entered the straight, Addictive Nature was sent to win the race and managed to open a healthy advantage on the field. He was forced to be kept up to his work to hold off the advances of Assimilate, who came wide with a late charge up the centre of the track.

But the son of Savabeel (Zabeel) was brave and he managed to find more under pressure to eventually hang on in the final strides to post a narrow victory.

Baker, who had been bullish about Addictive Nature’s chances beforehand, said the colt could now either head to the The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) back at Rosehill on 9 September or the Stan Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) on the same card.

“I think the Run To The Rose or the Stan Fox will be his next run so we’ve got a couple of options and we’ll just wait and see how he comes through,” said Baker.

“For a Savabeel he’s almost got too much speed, so it’s a little bit of a question in terms of what we do and where we go.

“We’ll see how he recovers after today before deciding what we do.“Regardless of what happens we are yet to see the best of him, he’s

sort of done it all this preparation, that was his third run, he’s been up for a while.

“He’s still doing things a little bit upside down but he’s got untapped ability.

“He’s always shown a lot, he was a high price yearling and is as good a looking horse as I’ve ever trained or ever been involved with.”

Baker was not ruling out the possibility he could develop into a Group One horse: “He’s got the ability, I was here six-seven years ago with also a good looking horse called Lion Tamer and he went on to very good things.

“I’d like to think this horse is in the same sort of calibre.”Clark echoed the sentiments of the trainer and believes the colt has a

bright future ahead of him and was confident he progress to the top-level. “He’s a really progressive colt, he’s got a very big future,” said Clark.

“He was courageous and toughed it out really well.“I think he’s probably a Group One horse, he’s just not quite there

mentally.“I think if he can get into a race where he can draw a soft gate and sit

behind a hot speed, he’ll be a lot better.“We haven’t seen the best of him yet. Wait until he gets in behind

them, switches off and watch his turn of foot then.“He got attacked the whole way, he was working the whole race and

for him to be able to kick and hang on, it was signs of a topliner.“Once he learns to do everything right you’ll see a pretty smart horse,”

the rider continued. Purchased by Ultra Thoroughbred Racing for NZ$775,000 at the New

Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale from the draft of his breeder Little Avondale Stud, Addictive Nature (3 c Savabeel - Generous Nature by Carnegie) has now won two of three career starts, for a total prize money of $126,950.

The colt is the sixth foal out of the unraced Carnegie (Sadler’s Wells) mare Generous Nature, making him a brother to the Group Two-winning gelding Savvy Nature (Savabeel) and Sir Ferrari (Testa Rossa), who is stakes-placed in Macau.

Generous Nature herself is out of the Listed-winning Danehill (Danzig)

mare La Lagune, who is a three-quarters sister to Group Three winner Make Me A Miracle (Flying Spur).

La Lagune also produced the dam of Eclipse Stakes winner (Gr 3, 1200m) Hasahalo (Savabeel). Among the colt’s other relative is the Group one winning pair Titanic Jack (Encosta De Lago) and Sober Suit (Noalcoholic).

In 2015 Generous Nature foaled a filly by Sebring (More Than Ready), now called Our Sunny Girl, who was purchased by Busuttin Racing for $230,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year.

She then missed to Per Incanto (Street Cry) and was served again by the Little Avondale-based sire last September.

Overshare Makes All In McKenzie Stakes Overshare (I Am Invincible) produced an impressive all the way

performance to comfortably win the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley yesterday.

The three-year-old, who was last seen running fourth in The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m), was alert out of the barriers and ridden into the lead by jockey Dwayne Dunn.

Upon straightening up Overshare’s rivals had began to queue up in behind, ready to make their moves, but none could pass the son of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and he powered home strongly to score by a length over the heavily supported $3 favourite Bandipur (Commands), with $41 outsider Sunquest (Helmet) a neck away in third.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said the Spendthrift Farm-raced Overshare had settled better yesterday than he had during his run in the The Rosebud.

"The difference between this time and the last time he was here was he wanted to get a bit keen," Hawkes said.

"That was young nerves but today he was a lot quieter in the gates and Dwayne (Dunn) gave him a peach of the ride.

"It's great for Spendthrift Farm because he's now a stakes winner."He's another colt that will go off to stud and that's what it's all about

for them."Overshare has some high-class spring entries, including the Golden

Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), but Hawkes said the stable did not know yet where the colt would head next.

Overshare (3 c I Am Invincible - Savannah's Choice by Redoute's Choice) was purchased from the Victoria Park draft by Spendthrift Australia for $320,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and has now won two of this five career starts for a total career prize money of $123,700.

The three-year-old colt is out of the winning and stakes-placed Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Savannah’s Choice, who is a half-sister to Grade One winner Cesario (Special Week), the dam of Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Epiphaneia (Symboli Kris S) and fellow Japanese Grade One winner Leontes (King Kamehameha).

Further back the colt is from the same family as Group One winner Anna Pavlova (Danehill Dancer) and Group Two winner Gothenburg (Polish Patriot).

Sunday 27 August 2017 Overshare Makes All In McKenzie Stakes

In 2015 Savannah’s Choice foaled a colt by Dundeel (High Chaparral), now called No Complaints and after not being served in 2015 she was most recently covered by Vinery Stud shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo).

In winning yesterday’s McKenzie Stakes Overshare also provided the Yarraman-based sire I Am Invincible with his 22nd stakes winner. He will stand this spring for an increased fee of $110,000 (inc GST) having stood last season for $55,000 (inc GST).

Missrock Proves Too Good In Carlyon StakesConsistent mare Missrock (Fastnet Rock) made a winning return

yesterday when she finished with an impressive flourish to land the Carlyon Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Moonee Valley.

Last seen running second behind Vega Magic (Lope De Vega) in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) in May, the Robbie Laing-trained Missrock ($7) broke well from barrier four and raced in third place under Ben Melham in the early part of the contest, with $2.25 favourite and eventual runner-up Heatherly (Lonhro) cutting out the early running.

As the field approached the home turn, Heatherly held a good advantage over the field and looked to have the race at her mercy.

But under a late drive from Melham, Missrock appeared out the pack, gaining on the leader with every stride, eventually catching her ten metres from the line to come away with a neck victory, with Lady Esprit ($10) another length and a half away in third.

After the race Laing said he initially thought Missrock, who won the Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in 2016, would return to Moonee Valley on 9 September for a tilt at the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m). However the trainer now thinks she would benefit from a step up in trip and said he would like to run her in The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on 14 October, if she can gain a spot in the $10,000,000 race.

"Watching her today, with the edge off her, she might want 1200 metres now," Laing said.

"She's got Vega Magic form and she beat English home two starts ago and they're talking The Everest.

"If she won a nice Group race in the next few weeks she might get a spot and she does go well at Randwick.

"Going through the field, the barometer was which one of these could run second in a Goodwood," Laing said

"There wasn't many of them."I thought we'd be giving Heatherly a start, but this mare has a bit of

guts about her."Laing said the mare would be kept to sprinting after being tried over a

staying trip as a spring three-year-old filly. If the mare failed to gain a run in The Everest, Laing believes the four-

year-old could be a lightweight chance in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield in October.

"Hopefully she can win a Group One," Laing said."She's a very valuable mare as she is, but if we can build on that it

would be terrific."Purchased by Laing for $500,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Yearling

Coast Sale in 2015 from the draft of her breeder Cressfield, Missrock (4 m Fastnet Rock - Miss Judgement by Strategic) has now four of her 15 career starts for a total prize money earning of $972,100.

The four-year-old mare is out of the Group Three winner Miss Judgement (Strategic), whose three other foals to race have all been winners.

Miss Judgement herself is a half-sister to Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Mrs Onassis (General Nediym) and Group Three winners Fifth Avenue Lady (Encosta De Lago) and Aussies Love Sport (Redoute’s Choice).

Her third dam is the dual Group One winner Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon), who produced Group Three winner Red Arrow (Red Ransom) and Hong Kong stakes winner Able Choice (Dehere).

Since producing Missrock, Miss Judgement foaled a filly by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), who was purchased by Raheen Stud for $220,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale in 2016 from the Cressfield Scone draft and she now called Wisdom Tree and is in training with Kris Lees.

After she slipped to Sepoy (Elusive Quality) in 2014, she produced a filly be Coolmore’s Fastnet Rock (Danehill) last year and was covered by the stallion again but missed to him.

65 For Savabeel The Waikato Stud-based stallion Savabeel (Zabeel) sired his 65th individual stakes winner yesterday when the Bjorn Baker-trained Addictive Nature (3 c ex Generous Nature by Carnegie) held on well for pressure inside the final 50 metres to win the Ming Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill. The Bjorn Baker-trained Addictive Nature defeated the previously unbeaten colt Assimilate (Sebiring) by a nose with another length and three quarters back to Astoria (Medaglia d’Oro) in third. Savabeel was crowned New Zealand champion sire by both winners and earnings last season and he will stand this spring for an unchanged fee of NZ$100,000 (plus GST).

22 For I Am InvincibleThe Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained Overshare (3 c ex Savannah's Choice by Redoute's Choice) put in a fine front-running display to win the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley yesterday and in the process provided his sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) with his 22nd individual stakes winner. The three-year-old colt powered home strongly to score by a length over the Godolphin-raced Bandipur (Commands), with Sunquest (Helmet) a further neck away third. I Am Invincible stands a Yarraman Park Stud in the Hunter Valley where his fee this spring will be $110,000 (inc GST), double what he stood for last season.

Ten For IstidaadThe Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Dee I Cee (6 g ex Smashed All Night by Night Shift) produced a shock result when running out an impressive winner of the Premier’s Cup (Listed, 1900m) at Rosehill yesterday to hand Istidaad (Chief’s Crown) with his tenth individual stakes winner. The six-year-old gelding had not won since January 2015, but

yesterday he proved too strong for his rivals to beat 3.50 favourite Classic Uniform (Al Maher) by just over two lengths with a head back to Centre Pivot (More Than Ready) in third.

Newcastle Cup For Dee I CeeAfter Dee I Cee’s victory in the Premier’s Cup co-trainer Adrian Bott said they would likely set the gelding on the same path as last season, starting with the Newcastle Cup (Gr 3, 2200m), a race he ran second in last year, and then back to The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m), having finished eighth in the Group One last season. "He didn't really come up last time in the autumn," Bott said. "But he had had the grounding for a race like this. He has no early speed but Rachel rode him perfectly. He will probably follow the same path as last year to the Newcastle Cup and Metropolitan and hopefully he can improve on what he did last year."

Alward Favourite For MetropolitanThe Chris Waller-trained Alward (Aqlaam) shot straight to the head of The Metropolitan market after his victory in the Pacific Boating Handicap (2000m) at Rosehill yesterday. The four-year-old gelding, who began his career with trainer Francois Rohaut in France, followed up his recent victory at Flemington yesterday when he beat stablemate Chatelard (Rip Van Winkle) by a neck with Nat King Cu (King Cugat) a further three quarters of a length adrift in third. "It was a good run and a nice ride. He's a tough horse, he got beat but it won't be the last you see of him,” said Waller. "He might even get out to 2400 (metres), not in a big race this prep ... next prep.”

Tango Rain Impresses At RosehillDespite Tango Rain’s (Manhattan Rain) win in a Benchmark 78 (1100m) at Rosehill yesterday, trainer Gerald Ryan has said he may keep the colt for some good races in the autumn,

rather than target spring races. Tango Rain, who ran second to Star Turn (Star Witness) in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) last season, had his autumn campaign curtailed after picking up a virus. Yesterday he finished powerfully to defeat Marsupial (Street Cry) by three quarters of a length. “It's really pleasing to see him win,” said Ryan. “He is a very fast horse. I'm not sure what we do with him now because his rating needs to be higher to get into some better races, and with the changes in the spring program they may come too soon. He may be an autumn horse."

Special Missile Too GoodThe John Thompson-trained Special Missile (Smart Missile) made it five wins in a row when he took out a Benchmark 80 (1500m) at Rosehill yesterday. The four-year-old gelding, whose winning thread began in June, beat Mapmaker (Henrythenavigator) by just over a length with The Pharoah (Snitzel) another three quarters of a length back in third. "He's a real little gutsy bugger who gives his all every time he goes around," Thompson said. "You can't instil that in horses and it'll take him a long way."

Bonny O’Reilly Back To Winning WaysShortly after Addictive Nature’s (Savabeel) win in the Ming Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1400m) trainer Bjorn Baker was back in the winner’s enclosure after stakes winning-mare Bonny O’Reilly’s (O’Reilly) victory in a Benchmark 95 (1200m) yesterday. The mare was resuming having not been seen since running 15th in the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1350m) at Doomben in June and yesterday she beat No Doubt (Not A Single Doubt) by three quarters of a length. "We will look at the Group Three Sheraco Stakes in two weeks," Baker said. "I thought this might be a soft enough race for her return even with the big weight. She's a very special mare to me. She has won eight from 12 now."

Roomooz Beats Tulip At The ValleyThe Tony McEvoy-trained Roomooz (Fastnet Rock) narrowly beat Group Three winner Tulip (Pierro) by a nose in a photo-finish in yesterday’s Johnnie Walker Plate (1200m) at Moonee Valley. The daughter of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) was resuming having not been seen since finishing eighth behind Catchy (Fastnet Rock) in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in February. "I've had a really high regard of her for a long time," McEvoy said. "What I was asking her to do in the autumn was a touch soon but when they've got such ability you press on if they're sound and well like she was. I thought she had improved tremendously through her break. That was a cracking fillies’ race and I'm extremely proud of her."

Almandin Second On ReturnLast season’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Almandin (Monsun) returned to the track for the first time since his victory in the Group One with a second place finish in the MSC Signs Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley yesterday. The Robert Hickmott-trained eight-year-old was shouldering 61 kilograms in the race and he finished three quarters of a length adrift of the Darren Weir-trained Pacodali (Paco Boy). "In all seriousness he had 61 kilograms and was thrown into this race being a quality handicap, so you like to see him running a nice race," said Nick Williams, who owns the gelding with his father Lloyd. "Benny (Melham) gave him a nice ride, had him in a nice rhythm and he finished off pretty well in a first up effort. You couldn't be happier."

It’s It Wins Idyllic Prince StakesThe Sharon Miller-trained It’s It (6 g Knowledge - Tiffany Island, by Island Morn) fought back inside the final 50 metres to win the Idyllic Prince Stakes (Listed, 1300m) at Belmont yesterday. This was a second victory at stakes level for the six-year-old gelding, having taken out the Beaufine Stakes (Listed, 1000m) in July and yesterday he beat Just Act Natural by a short-neck. “He’s got a great turn of foot and he just rolls along in front,” Miller said. “No one took him on and he just got his own way and backed off after a couple of 100, which means he could finish off well. He only does as much as he has to, he’s not a good track worker so you can’t get excited with him at home. You just come here and hope.”

Golden Rose Option For WhypeeoAfter Whypeeo’s (I Am Invincible) win in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1100m) at the Gold Coast yesterday, trainer Toby Edmonds said he was still undecided whether to aim the gelding at the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) next month or reserve him for the Magic Millions Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast in January. The three-year-old gelding, who has now won two of his three career starts, stayed on strongly to score a length victory over Shogun Sun (Written Tycoon). “There’s no rush to run in the Golden Rose as he’s a Magic Millions horse and he can run in the Magic Millions here," Edmonds said. “He’s a good horse but he may be too brilliant for the Golden Rose. We’ll have a good think about where we go with him.”

Earmuffs For Winx In Chelmsford

Trainer Chris Waller revealed yesterday that the champion mare Winx (Street Cry) will wear earmuffs when she looks to secure her 19th successive victory in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick next Saturday. Winx was fractious in the barriers at her first up win in the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) last week, which led to her rearing when the barriers opened and missing the start by some four lengths, but eventually beat stablemate Foxplay (Foxwedge) by a short-neck. "It just helps block out the background noise," Waller said. "She wears them at the races. We take them off as soon as she leaves the parade ring and that's the same in trials and races.”

First Queensland Winner For LittWarwick Farm-based trainer Richard Litt

saddled his first Queensland winner with his first runner yesterday courtesy of Il Mio Destino’s (Nadeem) win in the Haneco Lighting Open Handicap (1100m) at the Gold Coast. Warwick Farm-based Litt took over training from his father Jim in December and has had a steady stream of winners. "We have 16 in work at the moment. We thought this would be a nice race for Il Mio Destino who usually races well when on the fresh side," Litt said. “She will go to stud now but we might bring her back after she gets in foal to race for a while."

First Metro Win For ThorntonApprentice Steph Thornton chalked up her first Saturday metropolitan winner, after the Ciaron Maher-trained Here To There (Good Journey) backed up his win at Caulfield seven days ago in the Ladbrokes Handicap (1500m) at Moonee Valley yesterday. “It’s great we can provide her with her first city winner,” Maher’s assistant trainer David Eustace told Racing.com.

Treble For ClarkMeanwhile at Morphettville, Raquel Clark rode her fifth career treble when steering Unscopeable (Duporth) to victory in the Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate (1100m) and Danouli (Danerich) in a Benchmark 70 (2050m). The rider then completed the trio of wins aboard the Leon MacDonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained Counter Spin (Hard Spun) in the Benchmark 70 (1200m).

Fancourt Breaks ArmApprentice Lani Fancourt is facing an extended time on the sidelines after breaking an arm in a race fall at Murwillumbah after falling from Je Suis Prest (O'Lonhro) in the Solo Resource Recovery Handicap (1200m) on Friday when she came off in the straight. She was taken to hospital for observation and discharged on Saturday morning. Fancourt's boss Tony Gollan said x-rays confirmed she had a broken right arm. "Lani will see a specialist in Brisbane on Monday. It will probably require surgery," Gollan said. Fancourt was second in the Brisbane apprentice's premiership last season and was due to come out of her time in October, but Gollan said yesterday she could look to extend it.

Melbourne Cup Possible For MegablastPukekohe-based trainer Nigel Tiley plans to return to Australia with Megablast (Shinko King), ahead of a potential tilt at the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Flemington on 7 November. The six-year-old impressed Tiley with a two and three quarter lengths victory under 60 kilograms in an open handicap (1600m) at Ellerslie yesterday. “I had no problem with the weight, he was the best horse in the race,” Tiley said. “He’s got plenty of class. The tracks in Sydney should suit him. He copes on top of the ground, but he is so much better with the cut out of it.” Megablast raced twice in Victoria during the summer, finishing second in a handicap over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley on 17 June, and also ran eighth over 2520 metres at Flemington on 24 June.

Shellez Ace Wins AgainShellez Ace (Swiss Ace) recorded her second win in three starts in a maiden over 1400 metres at Pukekura yesterday. Shellez Ace, ridden by three kilogram claimer Jasmine Fawcett, beat Crafty Jess (Mastercraftsman) by a nose. “I’ve got a lot of time for this horse,” said Matamata part-owner and co-breeder Hamish McQuade, whose wife Karyn trains the mare. “She’s been slow maturing and very weak, that’s why we’ve been putting the claimers on her and spacing her runs. She’ll probably have two more runs while it’s wet, she’s not a firm tracker."

Mangaroa Flo Jo Posts Another VictoryMangaroa Flo Jo (High Chaparral) showcased her special affinity with the Pukekura track yesterday when she won the ITM Interprovincial Challenge (1600m), her fourth victory from eight starts at the track, beating Meritaggio (Road To Rock) by a length and a quarter. “John Wood bred and races her and he’s keen to continue on,” trainer Graham Thomas said. “She always goes well fresh, but she’ll be better in her second and third runs. We’ll look at some of the cups races.” Mangaroa Flo Jo was resuming after a three-month spell, and finished third in the same race last year. The winner of the Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Awapuni last season was ridden by regular rider Anna Jones.

Moreira Winless On Day One Of All-Star CompetitionHong Kong’s champion jockey Joao Moreira faces an uphill battle if he is to reclaim the World All-Star Jockeys title he won in 2015 after a winless start to Japan’s premier jockeys’ challenge at Sapporo Racecourse yesterday. Moreira sits in joint tenth in the 14-rider contest with eight points, well adrift of competition leader Keita Tosaki, who heads the leaderboard with 38 points. However, with a maximum of 60 points still up for grabs on today and the Brazilian rider will be hoping to capitalise aboard Meisho Bach (Meisho Bowler) and Admire Meteor (King Kamehameha).

International

16 For TamayuzThe Derrinstown-based stallion Tamayuz (Nayef) sired his 16th individual stakes winner courtesy of the Mustashry’s (4 c ex Safwa by Green Desert) win in the Strensall Stakes (Gr 3, 1m1f) at York yesterday. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old colt came into the race off the back of a victory over a mile at Chelmsford earlier in the month and he beat Forest Ranger (Lawman) by three quarters of a length with another length and a half back to Sovereign Debt (Dark Angel) in third. Tamayuz’s progeny are headed by two Group One winners, Precieuse and G Force, and he stood for a fee of €8,000 in 2017.

15 For Champs ElyseesThe Richard Hannon-trained Billesdon Brook (2 f ex Coplow by Manduro) ran out a ready winner of the Prestige Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Goodwood yesterday and in the process provided Coolmore’s Champs Elysees (Danehill) with his 15th individual stakes winner. The two-year-old filly, who was most recently seen winning at Goodwood on 3 August, beat Whitefountainfairy (Casamento) by three quarters of a length with the same distance back to Miss Bar Beach (Choisir) in third. Champs Elysees stands at Castlehyde, Coolmore’s National Hunt base, where his fee in 2017 was €6,500.

Five For PanisThe Richard Fahey-trained Sands Of Mali (2 c ex Kadiania by Indian Rocket) showed an impressive turn of foot when running out a ready winner of the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at York yesterday and in the process handed his sire Panis (Miswaki) with his fifth individual stakes winner. The two-year-old colt broke his maiden on his last start over six furlongs at Nottingham on 3 August and he proved too good for his rivals again yesterday, beating Invincible Army (Invincible Spirit) by two and three quarter lengths with another length back to Headway (Havana Gold) and Cardsharp (Lonhro), who dead-heated for third. Panis stands at Haras des Faunes and stood in 2017 for a fee of €2,000.

Palace Prince Wins Preis der Sparkassen Gruppe Palace Prince (5 h Areion - Palace Princess by Tiger Hill) led home Devastar (Areion) in the Preis der Sparkassen Finanzgruppe (Gr 3, 2000m) at Baden-Baden yesterday and in the process led home a quinella for the Gestut Evershorst-based sire Areion (Big Shuffle). Filip Minarik rode the Jean-Pierre Carvalho-trained entire, who has now won five of his 20 starts, including stakes wins in the Badener Meile (Gr 2, 1600m) in May and the Baden-Wurttemberg-Trophy (Gr 3, 2000m) last October, both run at Baden-Baden. Areion was a close second to Adlerflug (In The Wings) in the German sires' table by earnings going into today, but now looks likely to take the lead after Palace Prince's victory.

255 For GalileoThe William Haggas-trained Call To Mind (3 c ex Memory by Danehill Dancer) held on gamely in the final furlong to win the March Stakes (Listed, 1m6f) at Goodwood yesterday, and in the process provided Coolmore's champion sire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) with a 255th individual stakes winner. Bred and raced by the Queen, Call To Mind was a length and quarter clear of Count Octave (Frankel), with UAE King (Frankel) a further three lengths back in third. Galileo is currently leading sire in Britain by earnings, while he is leading Irish sire standings by both earnings and winners and stood at Coolmore in 2017 for a private fee.

Sound Silences His Rivals In Roses StakesA strong late run from the Charlie Appleby-trained Sound And Silence (2 c Exceed And Excel - Veil Of Silence by Elusive Quality) saw him defeat Abel Handy (Arcano) by half a length in the Roses Stakes (Listed, 5f) at York yesterday, with Out Of The Flames (Showcasing) a neck back in third. Bred and raced by Godolphin, this was second stakes win for Sound And Silence, having landed the Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Royal Ascot in June. The two-year-old colt has won three of his five career starts, amassing total prize money of £90,987. Darley shuttler Exceed And Excel (Danehill) will stand the upcoming breeding season at Kelvinside at a fee of $110,000 (inc GST).

Third Stakes Win For Gifted Master The Hugo Palmer-trained Gifted Master (4 g Kodiac - Shobobb, by Shamardal) added a third stakes win to his haul when rallying strongly to regain the lead on the line in the Hopeful Stakes at Newmarket yesterday (Listed, 6f), having led for much of the way. Steady Pace (Dark Angel) was narrowly denied in a thrilling finish by a short-short with Intisaab (Elnadim) another head back in third. Pat Smullen was once again in the saddle, having won the Pavilion Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) on him at Ascot last year. Kodiac (Danehill) is closing in on his record of 43 for most two-year-old winners in a year, currently sitting on 34. The son of Danehill (Danzig) stood the past season at Tally-Ho Stud for a fee of €50,000.

70 For TeofiloMildenberger (2 c ex Belle Josephine by Dubawi) won the Stonehenge Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Salisbury on Friday evening and in the process provided Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo) with his 70th individual stakes winner. The Mark Johnston-trained juvenile just got up on the line to beat Albishr (Clodovil) by a nose, with Tigre Du Terre (Le Havre) three quarters of a length back in third. Mildenberger holds early entries for a number of Group Two juvenile contests, as well as the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f ) at Newmarket on 14 October. Teofilo will stand for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST) at Kelvinside this year.

St Michel Bound For Melbourne CupThe Sir Mark Prescott-trained St Michel (Sea The Stars) now looks set for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), after finishing a game third behind Montaly (Yeats) in the Lonsdale Cup (Gr 2, 2m½f) at York on Friday. St Michel had last been seen finishing second to Red Cardinal (Montjeu) in the Belmont Gold Cup (Gr 3, 16f) in June. “He will definitely go to Melbourne this time," assistant trainer William Butler told Racing.com. "He would have got in the race last year off this mark, but the worry was he wouldn’t have got in the previous year. He has now sealed his ticket with that run, though. All year the Melbourne Cup has been the target. He is best fresh and all being well he will go into first quarantine. Sir Mark went there last year and loved it. He doesn’t rave about much but he raved about that.”

Ricci Unsure Of Australia RunnersThe Willie Mullins-trained Thomas Hobson (Halling), who came close to completing a Royal Ascot double this year, no longer looks set for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup, after finishing seventh in the Lonsdale Cup at York yesterday. “He had no cover and was disappointing to be honest – it is hard to say he will go to Melbourne on the back of that," owner Rich Ricci told Racing.com. "He travelled well into the race and turning for home I was thinking happy days, but it wasn’t to be." Ricci also revealed the 2015 Melbourne Cup runner-up Max Dynamite (Great Journey) would be unlikely to return to Australia after winning a race at Killarney on Thursday. “It is hard to justify going back to Melbourne on the back of a qualified riders’ race, but I will talk to Willie about both of them and take it from there."

Medicean RetiredCheveley Park Stud stalwart Medicean (Machiavellian), the sire of ten Group One winners to date, has been pensioned at the age of 20 due to fertility issues. Bred and raced by Cheveley Park Stud, Medicean was a dual Group One winner at four, after victories in the Lockinge Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) and Eclipse Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f). He was quick off the mark at stud, supplying Nannina and Dutch Art, both Group

One winners, in his first two crops. He retires with 44 stakes winners in total, while his son Dutch Art and grandsons Garswood (Dutch Art) and Slade Power (Dutch Art) will continue to represent him at stud. "Medicean is one of the kindest horses to be around, who I feel was underrated by many, having sired some ten Group One winners during his successful career," Cheveley Park's managing director Chris Richardson told the Racing Post.

Prix Niel Aim For CracksmanTrainer John Gosden has said Wednesday’s Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) winner Cracksman (Frankel) could now run in the Prix Niel (Gr 2, 2400m) at Chantilly next month, after reportedly coming out of his victory at York in good order. The Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Ascot and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) were earmarked as the only possible options, but it now appears the son of Frankel (Galileo) may be heading to France. "We are just keeping our minds open at the moment. We are just thinking that it is August and it is a long time until he can run again next May if you count the months on your fingers,” Gosden told the Racing Post. "If he is on good order I will discuss it with Mr Oppenheimer (owner) and we may well run again."

HTBA Announce 2017 Equistart GraduatesDr Cameron Collins, president of the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association (HTBA), and Jon Black, managing director of TAFE NSW, announced this year's Equistart Work Ready Program at Godolphin's Kelvinside stud yesterday. "The HTBA congratulates Mikeala Crowfoot, Madeline Dunbar, Tiannah Witney, Chelsea Kowe, Sophie White, Josie Sinnerton, Ashley Craddock, Cassandra Reid and Ester Green for completing the 2017 Equistart Work Ready Program," Dr Collins said. "All graduates should be very proud of their achievement which has equipped them with important knowledge and skills and the prospect of a future career in the thoroughbred breeding industry. We are very pleased that many of these graduates have already secured employment with local breeders either as trainees or entry-level employees."

The Richard Fahey-trained Sands Of Mali (Panis) powered to an impressive victory in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at York yesterday,

finishing two and three quarter lengths clear of Invincible Army (Invincible Spirit) in second, with Cardsharp (Lonhro) a length adrift in third.

Sands Of Mali had opened his account over six furlongs at Nottingham earlier this month, having finished seventh on debut at York in July. Sands Of Mali is bred by Simon Urizzi and raced by the Cool Silk Partnership.

The two-year-old colt was pinhooked by Con Marnane for €20,000 as a yearling from the Haras des Faunes draft at Osarus September Yearling Sale in 2016, before being purchased by his current owners and Stroud Coleman for £75,000 at this year's Tattersalls Ireland Ascot Two-Year-Old Breeze-Up Sale.

“He breezed really well and reminded me of Prince Of Lir, who won us a first Group Two in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot last year, as he was sharp and stocky,” Peter Swann, who owns Sands Of Mali in partnership with his wife Karin and mother-in-law Barbara Wilkinson, told the Racing Post. “He’s grown into a proper horse and we thought he’d run well today.”

In winning yesterday’s Group Two, Sands

Of Mali (2 c Panis - Kadiania by Indian Rocket) has now won two of his three career starts for a total prize money earning of £130,833.

The two-year-old colt is out of the unraced mare Kadiania (Indian Rocket), whose other foal to race, Kadrizzi (Hurricane Cat), is also a winner.

Kadiania herself is out of the Listed-placed Kapi Creek (Sicyos), while the colt’s third dam is the Listed-placed Kirigane (Vitiges). Among Sand Of Mali’s other relatives are the South American Grade One winners Uracao Negro (Be My Chief) and Miss Terrible (Numerous).

The colt is the most high profile winner to date for Panis (Miswaki), who has now sired five stakes winners in total, including Group Three winners Myasun and Out Of Time, as well as the dual Group One-placed Maiguri.

Later in the afternoon, the David Simcock-trained Lightning Spear (Pivotal) was able to find another gear in the final strides to successfully defend his Celebration Mile (Gr 2, 1m) crown at Goodwood, beating the Clive Cox-trained Zonderland (Dutch Art) into second for a second successive year.

The son of Pivotal (Polar Falcon) was settled just behind the leaders by jockey Oisin Murphy with the early pace being set by Hathal (Speightstown). As the field entered the final

two Lightning Spear looked to be feeling the pinch, with Murphy beginning to look animated aboard the entire.

But after responding to Murphy’s urgings, the six-year-old began to pick up, closing the gap on the leaders and eventually heading the leader Zonderland in the shadow of the winning post to score by a nose, with Hathal a further three quarter lengths adrift in third.

Bred by Newsells Park Stud and raced by Qatar Racing, Lightning Spear (6 h Pivotal - Atlantic Destiny by Royal Academy) was purchased for 260,000 guineas from the draft of his breeder at Book One of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2012 and he has now won six of his eight career starts for total prize money of £606,821.

He is out of the multiple stakes winner Atlantic Destiny (Royal Academy) making him a half-brother to the Listed winner Ocean War (Dalakhani) and stakes-placed First Destinity (Lawman) and Seaway (Dr Fong) and two other winners.

Atlantic Destiny herself is a half-sister to Group Two winner Make No Mistake (Darshaan), with the pair both being out of the Respectfully (The Minstrel), who is a three-quarters sister to Group Two winner High Competence (The Minstrel) and Vers La Caisse (The Minstrel).

Geoff Evers, breeder & shareholder in SebringHow much importance do you place on the conformation and look of the stallion as opposed to pedigree and race performance?“The female line of the stallion is something I am interested in and being able to see them on farm is certainly important as well.”

What has been your impression of the first season stallions you have seen in the Hunter Valley so far? “I thought the most impressive first season stallion, of the ones I have seen so far, has been Extreme Choice. He is only 15.1 hands or something, but he is a very athletic horse.”

Have you already completed your mare mating plans and have the stallion parades influenced or changed your decisions on which stallions to send your mares to? “I have already made my decisions. I am pretty happy with what I am doing. I am sending one to I Am Invincible, three mares to Sebring, and a couple to Star Witness.” Do you think there are too many stallions at stud now?“I think it is going to be difficult for all these first season stallions to cover a reasonable book of mares because there is too many of them to give themselves the best chance of success.”

What do you enjoy about the Hunter Valley stallion parade weekend?“After it is over and I stop consuming alcohol.”

Reg Rogyoan, breeder of Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Military RoseHow much importance do you place on the conformation and look of the stallion as opposed to pedigree and race performance?"You definitely want to match the physicality of your mare to the stallion, but I also place a lot of emphasis on the commercial viability of the stallion. Extreme Choice is only a small stallion, so you wouldn't put a small mare to him."

What has been your impression of the first season stallions you have seen in the Hunter Valley so far? "I liked Widden Stud’s Stratum Star, Flying Artie at Newgate on type and Capitalist and Extreme Choice on performance.

Have you already completed your mare mating plans and have the stallion parades influenced or changed your decisions on which stallions to send your mares to?"I have already done my matings and this weekend hasn't changed my decisions with where I am sending my mares this season.

Do you think there are too many stallions at stud now?"I would say that there are Group Three horses retiring to stud probably too early."

What do you enjoy about the Hunter Valley stallion parade weekend?“I have been coming here for probably 15 years and talking to people in the industry is a real buzz."

Do you have any tips for surviving stallion parade weekend in the Hunter Valley?"Drink plenty of water and don't over consume the alcohol."

Do you have any horses to following in the spring? "After today, Pariah is a horse to follow and he will be even better when he steps up in distance."

Do you have any tips for surviving the stallion parade weekend in the Hunter Valley? “I can’t really give you any advice on that other than try not to consume too much alcohol!”

Do you have any horses to following in the spring? “I do, but I prefer to keep them to myself.”

Dave Metcalfe, Middlebrook Valley LodgeHow much importance do you place on the conformation and look of the stallion as opposed to pedigree and race performance?"The conformation is very important aspect to match up with a mare.”

What has been your impression of the first season stallions you have seen in the Hunter Valley so far?“I think Arrowfield Stud has a nice first season stallion in Shalaa.”

Have you already completed your mare mating plans and have the stallion parades influenced or changed your decisions on which stallions to send your mares to?“Naturally, we have already made a lot of decisions and I am happy with what I have done.”

Do you think there are too many stallions at stud now?"The market sorts out what they are worth once they enter the ring.

What do you enjoy about the Hunter Valley stallion parade weekend?"You get to catch up with a lot of people.”

Do you have any tips for surviving stallion parade weekend in the Hunter Valley?“Don't get too drunk.”

Do you have any horses to following in the spring? “None that I can tell you about.”

Analysis: Promising Bjorn Baker-trained colt Addictive Nature is now the winner of two of three starts and he did well in recording his first stakes success here. He was smartly away, went to the front but was pressured in the lead (by Runaway). He got a break on turning for home and then fought back really gamely to score a narrow but very good win. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Assimilate, a winner of his first two starts, settled in last place from barrier eight in the nine-horse field before going widest of all at the home turn. He then sprinted well, challenged at the 100m and kept finishing well for a very good second. Godolphin-raced colt Astoria settled in sixth place, one off the rails,

moved up well at the 200m and kept battling on nicely to take a good third. Team Hawkes-trained colt Mahalangur raced back in seventh place (on the rails), switched deeper at the 300m and kept running on in good style for (2.2 lengths) fourth, in a really promising effort at only his second race start.

JAMES HARRON BLOODSTOCK

Analysis: Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Pariah was an impressive first up winner, his second Group success in five starts to date. He went back from his outside barrier (9), was second last early on and then travelled well in seventh place on the rails before angling into clear running at the 300m. He then finished well, hit the front at the 100m and then fought back to score decisively. It was also a very good ride by Blake Shinn. Team Hawkes-trained colt Chauffeur settled back in last place from barrier seven, before improving between runners on turning for home. He went to third at the 100m and kept running on well for a very good second in a promising first up effort. The Godolphin-raced filly Jorda, winner of the Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on debut at Randwick in October, resumed here and settled in fifth place (one the rails). She was in restricted room at the 300m and ran on nicely, late, for a third in a really good effort. Shadwell-raced filly Madeenaty was quickly away and then eased to race behind the leader (Speed Street). She moved up really well at the 300m, briefly hit the front at the 200m and then held on well for a good (1.5 lengths) fourth.

Analysis: The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained gelding Dee I Cee was a surprise $41 winner. Having his second run this preparation, he was third early on before settling back in sixth place (on the rails) behind a solid pace. He switched out rounding the home turn, got to the front at the 100m then went on to score decisively in a good staying effort, and in smart time. The favourite Classic Uniform went to the front, ran along at a good tempo (with Broadside at his girth), held a good break at the 300m, before tiring in the latter stages for second after running a bold race. Centre Pivot raced in second last place in the eight-horse field and made good ground to take the minor placing.

He was smartly away, went to the front and travelled well at a steady tempo on the Good 4 track. He was challenged on straightening but kept fighting back gamely, holding on to win well. The favourite Just Act Natural raced outside the leader (It’s It), challenged on turning for home and kept fighting well for second, just finding the winner a bit too good. racing in Sydney to score a smart win here, his second win in five starts and his first at stakes class. He began quickly from his good barrier (3) went to the front and after going a bit keenly in the early part and then settled well. He was challenged at the home turn but kept fighting back really well to score well. The favourite Bandipur crossed to race outside the leader (Overshare), challenged that runner at the home turn and kept fighting gamely for a good second. The $41 outsider Sunquest settled back in eighth place (on the rails), improved between runners at the home turn and then ran on well to take a good third. Azazel raced in sixth place, one off the rails, moved up (deep) approaching the home turn and kept fighting quite well for (1.4 lengths) fourth.

Analysis: Missrock, who was having her first start since a good second in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville on 20 May, staged a good performance in winning here. She improved nicely along the rails in the early stages to settle in third place. Was under riding nearing the home turn but responded in the closing stages and finished a bit too well to score in good fashion. The favourite Heatherly was unsettled in the barriers, was slow to move but recovered from her good barrier (2) to move through to lead. She then travelled well, looked the winner when she got a break on turning for home, only wilting nearing the post for second in a sound first up effort. Lady Esprit raced in sixth place (on the rails), got along the inner at the home turn and kept fighting on to take the minor placing.

Then followed: Limestone (AUS), Garrard (AUS) & Cherief’s Choice (AUS), last.

Analysis: Promising Tony McEvoy-trained filly Roomooz was a narrow but impressive winner. She began well, eased to settled in fourth place (one out and one back), behind a reasonable tempo (first 600m 36.29) on the Good 4 track, before moving up nearing the home turn. She got to the front on at the 100m and then held on gamely to score in a photo. The favourite Tulip was smartly away but was eased after being caught deep to settle in fifth place, one off the rails. She tracked the eventual winner (Roomooz) rounding the home turn, challenged at the 100m and

kept finishing well for a close second in a smart first-up effort (conceding 2.5kg to the winner). True Excelsior led the field to the home turn held on to take the minor placing in a photo from Limestone who caught the eye running on late for fourth in another smart first up run.
