About AustraliaAustralia is a country located in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the world's smallest continent On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated and the

Commonwealth of Australia was formed. The current population of Australia is over 20 million and is

concentrated mainly in the large coastal cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. 

The capital of Australia is Canberra (Australia Capital Territory)

The highest point on the mainland Australia is Mount Kosciuszko which is only 2228 metres.

Apart from Antarctica, Australia is the driest continent on earth.

Australia is divided into 6 states: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania

and 2 territories; the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.

The Australian Flag

The Australian flag can be considered to consist of three main elements:• The Union Jack represents Australia's historical links with Great Britain. • The Southern Cross is a significant navigational feature of the southern hemisphere and strongly places Australia geographically .• The Commonwealth Star or Star of Federation has seven points to denote the six states and the combined territories of the Commonwealth.

Prime MinisterKevin Michael Rudd is Australia’s current Prime Minister. He was sworn in as the 26th Prime Minister of Australia on December 3 2007, after he led the Australian Labor Party to an election win on November 24. Prior to entering Parliament in 1998, Mr Rudd worked as a diplomat, as a senior official in the Queensland Government, and as a consultant helping Australian firms to establish and build their business links in China. Mr Rudd has written extensively on Chinese politics, Chinese foreign policy, Australia-Asia relations and globalisation.
