MAIN POINTS• Australia is the largest island in the world, but it’s the smallest continent. The people live in southeastern coastline. The interior of the country is unpopulated

• The most famous British explorer James Cook arrive in Australia in 1770. He brought prisoners.

• The British decided to colonise the island. The government decided the best solution was to send prisoners, to this faraway island. Finally the British wanted to strengthen economic between Britain and the region.

• The prisons make an important port, this is actually Sydney.

• Most Australians are descendants of European settlers.
