What do you like?

BARRINGTON

‐ Free after school programs ‐ Better human capital through Ppft and focus on improving teacher

quality ‐ Updating of facilities and modifications are in place to allow for the

Montessori academy or expansion of academic programs. ‐ Good specialized parent and community programming.

What would you like to change?

‐ The ability to have the money for after school programs from the beginning of the year. We have noticed that attendance and enrollment decreases when parents are not able to find an after school program that meets their needs from the beginning of the year.

‐ Behavior management classes for parents to help their children be successful.

What’s missing? ‐ Technology innovation strategic plan for elementary schools ‐ Parent classes on helping their children understand how to re enf‐ orce at

home what has been learned at school Additional comments

‐ Students would benefit from a smaller class size (student to teacher ratio)

What do you like?

BERTHA SADLER MEANS YWLA

‐ Extending the dual language program into middle school ‐ Teacher profile to reflect highly effective teachers will help draw and retain

highly qualified staff ‐ Algebra I enrollment and success on the STAAR EOC has increased

significantly over the last three years at Sadler Means

What would you like to change? ‐ Additional personnel to support the dual language program ‐ Include Sadler Means in the enhanced compensation outlined on page 16 ‐ Include administrators in the improving human capital part of the plan

(seems to be focused only on teachers) ‐ Adjust % of permanent capacity to remove the area of the building that is not

usable What’s missing?

‐ Support for first year and new teachers (such as the REACH mentors) ‐ Outside service providers such as Sylvan tutors to work with small groups ‐ Possibility of a reduced teaching schedule for new/first year teachers ‐ Causal factors for lower attendance rates and lower STAAR scores are not

addressed Additional comments

‐ Programs beneficial to our student population: STEAM, BPA, CTE, Robotics, Drumline, Maker Space that should be supported and enhanced

‐ Additional funding is necessary to market our school to prospective students and increase enrollment

What do you like?

BLACKSHEAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The admi‐ nistration will continue to support the Fine Arts Academy at Blackshear

What would you like to change? How do we stabili‐ ze funding for the Fine Arts program? Support for facilities ‐ that include comprehensive pest control We would like our special Fine‐ Arts rooms excluded from calculation of enrolled capacity Professional develo‐ pment – time options, 2nd planning period

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

What do you like?

BLANTON VISITOR – Possible future parent

Yes, need‐ extended after care to 6:30 is‐ h Yes, need‐ investment in buildings—but also sites (fences, play grounds, trees, landscapes!

Makes for a pleasant place to be) Need more teachers‐ per students Full dual language‐ at Blanton Environ‐ mental learning campus

What would you like to change? Mueller should not have an‐ elementary!

This will not support integr‐ ation and desegregation. This would be an isolationist step. Surrounding schools school be supported. (All elementary schools are improving—need Montessori options, strong dual language programs, focus on social/emotional learning and programming to create learners, not teaching to tests.) Mueller should be a middle school for the e‐ ntire region

What’s missing? Connec‐ tion to outdoors. Great calm learning environments Mixing grades, ability to stu‐ dy what kids are passionate about

Additional Comments: I need a reason to send my kid to Blanton. Spanish immersion or M‐ ontessori would be

good reasons. Also would love an environmental education campus (Another draw for attracting families)

What do you like?

BLANTON

‐ Dual language program investment and expansion ‐ Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐ Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

for HR, scheduling, class size decisions

What would you like to change? ‐ 100% rejection of elementary school built at Mueller which does not

comport with NE Austin vision for socioeconomic integration ‐ Salary increase – needs review of point system to ensure it incentivizes as

intended along with raises/bonuses ‐ Drawback professional development funds spent at district level to be spent

at campus level Ex: instructional specialists/instructional coaches What’s missing?

‐ Middle school option to close path from elementary to high school Additional comments

‐ In 5 10 years CAC sees Blanton Elementary as: ‐o A model Dual Language School o Feeding to an excellent middle school in our neighborhood o GT student classroom/enrichment established

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 8: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

What do you like? Good Data ‐ P Tech is gre‐ ‐ at!

CAMPBELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

What would you like to change? Affordable housing fo‐ r teachers (will it be effective?) Enhanced‐ compensation campuses should be for all high needs campuses

Why isn’t Campbell? Why only LBJ/Reagan? A lot of the pla‐ n doesn’t include Campbell (eg. After School Program) Art inte‐ gration

Align art with curri‐ culum We asked‐ ourselves what would draw quality teachers to NE Austin?

Training Facility (mandated) ‐ Set teac‐ hers up to succeed in ANY classroom (class management)

What’s missing? Recogniti‐ on (District and Public) of Campbell as a media and performing arts institute (on

website/social media)

Additional Comments: Not enough information included about Campbell ‐ Include casual factors (gentr‐ ification) for decline in enrollment How will ‐ an additional school at Mueller affect existing schools?

What do you like?

DOBIE PRE K ‐

Parents/families lo‐ ve our school & staff Our school is exempl‐ ary (we are a model campus)

What would you like to change? A facility ‐ score of 80‐90% Retain m‐ ore pre k st‐ udents from Hart and Graham (attendance area) More campus facilities such‐ as technology lab, gymnasium Perhaps design/build perm‐ anent early childhood center Dedicated‐ learning spaces for students to travel to weekly (eg. Science & Technology) Outdoor activities maker spaces ‐ “authentic outdoor experiences” (Outdoor learning

spaces) Feel more like an‐ individual school unconnected to Dobie MS Parking/loop for students/staff/families ‐ Crea‐ te own cafeteria Create a‐ Pk 2 campus (PK3 & P‐ K4) Give parents info. A‐ bout distinction between public & charter schools Spaces dedicated to pare‐ nts for learning Do we need to start training tea‐ chers on Montessori since another campus is being

considered? What is the plan for the Dobie PK Campus? ‐

What is needed to get to our 5 10 year g‐ oal? Additi‐ onal Funding City to ‐ address items requested by Principal (eg. Crosswalk lights, officer monitoring)

How will learning look in 5 10 years? ‐ Hands on acti‐ ‐ vities, dynamic, active participation Technology tablets, iPads, computers ‐

What should we include in the NE Austin Plan? Coordin‐ ation of grant writing/writers (with those already ‘plugged in’) Additi‐ onal funding for major facility improvement

Quotes: “If it doe‐ sn’t benefit everybody—we don’t need it.” – Spoken by parent “If just in‐ vesting in new campus it contradicts our vision (our campus) and seems

unnecessary when we have successful early childhood programs”

What do you like?

GRAHAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The movement of LASA to its own campus ‐ The option of a Mon‐ tessori school STEAM opportunity ‐

What would you like to change? Campuses over capacity should not receive ‐ students from outside their areas

What’s missing? How is the funding structured for‐ afterschool childcare and which budgets will be used? STEAM offered at mo‐ re than one campus

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 12: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

What do you like?

GUS GARCIA YMLA

‐ Dedicated servers/Innovation stations ‐ Technology needs to be competitive and advancing (infrastructure) (YWLA

Good building) in the neighborhood, no busing ‐ Are we sharing with UT or are we independent now ‐ Vocational tracts – career avenues Architectural,

Automotive/Electrician/Construction/Kinesiology – Sports Training/Horticultural (PTech allows for internships)

‐ Literacy ‐ Engagements ‐ Remedial instruction and collaborative efforts with elementary schools

(vertical team building) ‐ Resources ‐ Summer programs

Additional comments

What do you like?

‐ Commitment to community

HARRIS

What would you like to change?

‐ Improving human capital – developing teacher pipelines with Community/Universities to attract teachers to area

‐ Innovative academic programming: campus specific, given time to see programs grow

‐ Facilities: Upgrade technology, construction done in a timely manner What’s missing?

‐ Human capital beyond the teachers: Parent/community embedded (i.e. social worker)

Additional comments Continue to treat schools for individual challenges/identity ‐

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 14: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

What do you like?

‐ Current class size/ratio (22/1) ‐ High tech classrooms ‐ After school programming ‐ Housing options for teachers

HART

‐ Financial incentives for teachers ‐ PPfT for teachers

What would you like to change? ‐ The needs of newcomers/refugees addressed ‐ High tech classrooms in elementary schools ‐ Specify whether after school programming is paid for by local or district

funds ‐ Specify timeline/teacher input on developers for housing options for

teachers What’s missing?

‐ Mentors for novice teachers in order for them to become highly effective (Human Capital)

Additional comments There is‐ nothing in the plan to specifically address the high number of refugee

students relocating to the NE Area. We feel this is paramount to meet the needs of our students and help our teachers.

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 15: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

What do you like?

KEALING

‐ The focus on retaining families in the region ‐ Opportunity to discuss these things ‐ Vision seems relevant to Northeast Austin ‐ Focus on innovative programming

What would you like to change? ‐ Integration should be district wide; not just NE ‐ More targeted PR program at the campus level focused on getting families to

return to the school ‐ Curriculum that focused to a more diverse demographic ‐ How to support students who are currently in our district and are not

successful What’s missing?

‐ We need more staff (staff ratios) ‐ Curriculum/Tests/Guides that are comprehensive and accurate

Additional comments

‐ Our goal is to create a school where teachers don’t have to reinvent the wheel. We need the districts help to do this

‐ More TAs – more concrete info/books/etc. Kealing Community Members What do you like?

‐ I like the idea of having a school in Mueller but strongly recommend that it is a middle school. The surrounding elementary schools can serve the need of the growing population of our area but we are in dire need to have a normal middle school (not single gender) ‐

What’s Missing?

‐ Strategies to promote teacher retention o Housing and transportation o Specialized professional pathways o Teacher assistants o Longevity and performance incentives

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 16: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

Ideal Plan

LASA

‐ Stand alone, independent campus; not co located with any other school ‐ ‐‐ Comprehensive high school: Full complement of UIL athletics, fine arts,

competitive academic activities, with facilities, resources to support them ‐ Room for growth to up to 1600 students which will expand opportunities for

greater access and diversity ‐ Open to all students in AISD ‐ Continue to provide transportation

Also nice ‐ Central which will support greater access

Second best

‐ Co location‐ at current location ‐ Major addition to existing facilities to support the academic program of both

schools ‐ Room for growth in both schools, including extra student space at LASA to

help expand opportunities for greater access and diversity ‐ Permanent signage on front of the building adding LASA name

‐ Absolutely not a co l‐ ocation at a new site

Programmatic needs regardless of location ‐ Dedicated journalism facilities ‐ Collegiate level research labs

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 17: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

What do you like?

LBJ

‐ To house technology in one location ‐ P Tech for Health Science, Firef‐ ighter certification (CTE) – bring in pathways

for technology ‐ Focus on college readiness, differentiated support ‐ Recruit and retain staff ‐ Provide quality professional development ‐ Ability to obtain high school diploma and Associates degree ‐ Improving Human Capital – 1st paragraph ‐ LASA moving to another facility ‐ High tech classrooms for LBJ ‐ Providing housing for teachers ‐ Strengthening literacy ‐ Provide engagement in critical studies ‐ CTE center ‐ Partnering with businesses to provide internships to students ‐ Provide engagement in critical studies

What would you like to change? ‐ Boundaries – how these lines are defined ‐ Change perception of LBJ as being a low performing school. LBJ is

progressing (always saying it’s a socioeconomic disadvantaged population) ‐ Verify the feeder patterns are consistent ‐ Use an asset base approach to how we view the school ‐ Enrollment impact ‐ Not building a new school in Mueller when there are elementary schools in

the area ‐ Creating modern facilities ‐ Continue to include Kealing vertical teams with LBJ and Reagan ‐ By building Mueller (predominantly white school) – it will further

desegregate ‐ Childcare options and programs for parents ‐ Too short of time ‐ CACs of LASA, Sadler Means and Gus Garcia were surveyed but not LBJ or

Reagan and LASA doesn’t have a vertical team ‐ Would like to see magnet or expand admissions into magnet programs ‐ Principals involved in recruitment for their schools ‐ Conflicting information – can info be school specific ‐ Increase enrollment ‐ Last paragraph on page 15 – how can new teacher get a compensation the

same as a teacher who has taught for 20 years? ‐ Page 16 – last two lines – focusing on the “whole child” isn’t AISD already

doing this with students?

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 18: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

‐ Adjust the focus of vertical team of the dual language program vs the ESLprogram

What’s missing?‐ How many students graduated with Associates degree‐ Not showing data for Early College program‐ Not defining the vertical teams‐ What are the plans for renovation‐ A vocational training track for students in the middle with job placement at

DARS‐ No plan to desegregate the schools

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 19: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

What do you like?

MAPLEWOOD

‐ Idea of innovative programming – but what does that mean? ‐ Classroom resources for all have to come first ‐ Continue to explore innovative grade configurations K 8‐ ? ‐ Pair 2 campuses – 1 primary, 1 intermediate

What would you like to change? ‐ No elementary school at Mueller site ‐ Need is for a 6 8‐ th middle school (coed MS) ‐ Maplewood has embraced and adapted to growth – taking steps to deplete

the population is detrimental ‐ Defer entry into Magnet program until 7th grade (once accepted at 6th grade)

What’s missing?

‐ Strong leadership to guide the process and to establish timelines ‐ Parameters around how it would be funded and implemented ‐ An overarching vision of the tracking patterns for NE – including values,

diversity, programming, inclusiveness ‐ Focus on classroom resources, more books, more technology

Additional comments

‐ There is a need to establish trust in the community as any plan goes forward ‐ Any plan for NE school must elevate all schools, not one (NE Mueller school) ‐ Commitment to equip classroom equitably

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 20: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

What do you like? PTECH ‐ Ethnic Studies ‐ Reach Incen‐ tives

NORMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

What would you like to change? Improving Human Capital ‐

add two days to the teacher contract to allow the campus ‐ to design professional development Hiring pr‐ ocess

Steps – HR then Face to Face‐ w/ Lesson taught @ end of year Wells Fargo, Financial‐ Literacy Partnership Rezone to‐ not exclude un gent‐ rified areas

What’s missing? Substitutes ‐ TAs to support high need‐ s Raise P‐ ay to compete w/ other school districts

Additional Comments: Why are we buildin‐ g a new facility with declining enrollment? Will the Montesso‐ ri school require an application? Will there be a lottery? What is the

process or will this school be for the current children?

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 21: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

What do you like?

OAK SPRINGS

‐ Oak Springs Pre K to Pre Med ‐ ‐‐ PTECH – gives those students an opportunity to learn and practice ‐ Ethnic studies

What would you like to change? ‐ The Mueller campus (Montessori, etc.) could take away students from Oak

Springs and other surrounding schools (we’re against). It has the potential to actually deter any socio economic dive‐ rsity

What’s missing?

‐ Financial incentives for low in‐ come teachers (similar to stipends for SPED and bilingual teachers) could lower teacher turnover rates in tough campuses like ours

Additional comments

‐ Increased investment to the highest need schools. The investment should be proportional to the need.

Where do we want to be in 5 10 ‐ years?

‐ Improved academic performance ‐ Tier support ‐ Facility upgrades ‐ Signature program (Pre K to Pre Med) ‐ ‐‐ Socio economic diver‐ sity

What do we need to get there?

‐ Enhance technology

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

What do you like?

OVERTON

‐ Proposal housing for teachers ‐ Hiring priority ‐ Access to more technology ‐ Incentives/signing bonus to attract teachers ‐ Local recruiting for dual language ‐ Motivational programs

What would you like to change? ‐ STEAM focus at the elementary level ‐ Clear alignment from elementary through high school

What’s missing?

‐ Parent involvement and resource centers ‐ Academic plans for newcomers ‐ Addition of an 8 classroom wing – was on the original blueprint for the

building, but it was never funded. Currently campus is at 119% capacity and portables are not in a good condition

Additional comments

‐ Overton needs to be added to the enhanced compensation campuses and to know more about the criteria

‐ Overton is onboard to pilot STEAM!!

What do you like?

PECAN SPRINGS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

We like the aspect of‐ being able to hire new teachers sooner and have the help to gain high quality teachers that fit our teacher profile

What would you like to change?

What’s missing? What is the in‐ structional services index? More depth to section 4. What ways to inform community and impact progress ‐ Depth in explaining ‐ what modern and enhanced facilities entail

Additional Comments: Pecan Springs has the‐ Two way dual language program

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 24: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

What do you like?

‐ Flexible schedules

REAGAN

What would you like to change?

‐ Improve role of instructional coach ‐ New teacher support ‐ Clear plan to improve human capital ‐ New technology ‐ Improve parent involvement ‐ Training for all people on campus ‐ Strategical vertical team benchmarks ‐ District proved dedicated attendance staff to increase ‐ Teach community about the importance of attendance ‐ “Parent University” manpower e‐ xpanding parent/community support

beyond elementary school ‐ Strengthen vertical team elementary through high school ‐ Highlight good things/improvements at schools ‐ Strengthen vertical team across the board

What’s missing?

‐ How do we ensure students in magnet schools come to vertical team? ‐ Technology in schools ‐ Who offers what and what requirements required for plan ‐ Vertical team – elementary to high school – is single gender a problem? ‐ What is it to be a Raider? Are Windsor Park elementary schools on LBJ

vertical team and change Additional comments?

‐ Will parents want to adopt Montessori lifestyle at home? ‐ Look at curriculum more detailed ‐ What is P Tech? ‐‐ What do “high tech classrooms” look like? Are kids prepared for this change? ‐ Outreach to all community ‐ Look at Graham elementary?

Compiled by Chief Office of Teaching and Learning Last revised as of 12/01/16

Page 25: Austin Independent School District · Web view‐Teacher retention: salary increases and incentive programs ‐Opportunities for District of Innovation to allow greater campus autonomy

RIDGETOP PARENT (not represented by CAC) – Mueller Resident

What do you like? Montesso‐ ri at Winn Free after school care at NE schools ‐ Impressi‐ ve attendance at NE elementary & middle schools

What would you like to change? Shift from thinking of Mueller School as elemen‐ tary first to one that is middle school – ‐

first with opportunity to flex down. It’s easier to repurpose a facility for younger kids than to prep an elementary to receive older students

What’s missing? Pearce Building is old,‐ in poor condition, and grossly under enrolled. It’s in an area of

increasing real estate value. Bertha Sadler Means could relocate to a new Middle school or co locate with Garcia ‐ or in a section of Reagan

Additional Comments: There doesn’t seem t‐ o be enough information in that about why families are choosing

charter, special programs, and untended hours may be part of the reason but I suspect a lot of it has to do with aggressive recruitment and an expressed interest in attracting families. I know that uniforms can be popular and give an image of exclusivity. Regardless, I think AISD needs to fight fire with fire to get them back. That does mean spread programs and after school care and‐ it also means a concerted push towards effective presentation and recruitment. Charter have an advantage in that they can self d‐ efine whereas public schools always need to be able to receive and serve all. Finding a powerful and attractive message within that for each school is key, as is projecting confidence, safety, and quality during school visits

Other Thoughts: Shift part‐ of Maplewood boundaries to Campbell – great things going on there Move TA Brown to Winn ‐ Achieve e‐ xcellence through “natural diversity” – not magnets or special programs, but a

boundary that draws from all walks of life. A Mueller only elementary school will not ‐accomplish this but will just increase a sense of privilege and division.

What do you like?

SIMS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Free after‐ school childcare – Boys & Girls Club

What would you like to change? Admin investing in two way du‐ ‐ al language communities at campuses who want the

program on their campus Elementa‐ ry schools sharing tech/computer labs w/ middle school

Provide devices on each campus & compu‐ ter classes Flexible scheduling at‐ elementary

Less seat time and emphasis on subject ‐

What’s missing? More detail on Early College ‐ Prep at the Elementary level Before school child c‐ are IB Program ‐ Language‐ options at every grade level (Anderson Vertical team example)

Additional Comments: Explain how schools were‐ identified for enhanced compensation Explain selection of ‐ Winn as Montessori Academy Explain why some campuses received yard‐ signs Concern‐ for electric wires “Robin Hood” –Hous‐ ton voters rejected sending money back to the state

What do you like?

WEBB K 8 ACADEM‐ Y

Human C‐ apital – Financial incentives to teach in identified schools Academic Programming Initiati‐ ve – After school childcare

What would you like to change? Clearer language & goals for ‐ affordable housing and said financial incentives PPFT is ‐ an unfair measure of Teacher performance and should not be a basis for

compensation, Title 1 schools require much more of teachers than non Title‐ 1, and compensation should reflect that. Salarites need to be way more competitive Would like to see before school‐ programs for those schools that have a need

What’s missing? Teachers‐ mentoring (full release mentors) for new & struggling teachers Technology? No mention in the p‐ lan. Where is AISD going w/ technology? Building Reag‐ an Vertical schools as community school model. It is already in process and

should be used as model

Additional Comments Webb has had a really successful passing ‐ rate for the Spanish AP test and Algebra test Brown ES crisis needs to be addressed in‐ the facilities plan and rethinking the attendance

community ‐ We are looking to the future and the possibility of what changes may bring ‐ Climate has improved with new admin ‐ Physical and internal change are happening

What would you like to change? ‐ Would like the district to step up with informing community, i.e. options and

Montessori philosophy ‐ Drawing in the newer community members and students ‐ Informing families of transfer process ‐ Our boundaries divide the community – we have students physically

disconnected) ‐ The training process for staff ‐ Our community outreach to the families on Cameron Rd. ‐ Disconnect due to little communication in the past and feelings that teachers

were left out of the conversation What’s missing?

‐ Outreach to families – the district helping to educate the current parents ‐ Connection with all community members – connection with the staff ‐ District outreach – we need help to reach out to families to inform them of
