I. NAME OF COMPANY: AUSTAL PHILIPPINESII. COMPANY PROFILE:

a. History

A word AUSTAL was came from the word “Australia Aluminum”. In late 2011, Austal acquired a shipyard in the Philippines to regionalise its manufacturing base for commercial vessels. It started its operations on February 2012 with about 21 employees. Austal Philippines has two more sister company in the world. One is located at Henderson, Australia and other one is located at Alabama, USA. Today, Austal is a global defence prime contractor and world leader in the design & construction of customised aluminum defence and commercial vessels.

Engineering Department is the in charge of mechanical works of the vessel such as pipings, engine installations, shaft alignment, hot ventilation and air conditioning, machining of necessary parts, pressure testing, hydraulics and the likes.

c. Specific Job / Duty as OJT Trainee PUMPING OIL INTO THE ENGINE, GEAR BOX AND GENERATOR HAND TAPPING DRILLING PIPE BENDING TORQUING BASIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ENGINE INSTALLATION BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN WELDING INSPECTION THEORY

a. As perceived by the company Lacking of tools and equipments Poor management

b. As perceived by the trainee Too much scrap of materials Corruption Lazy workers Favoritism / discrimination

c. Findings and Analysis The top management don’t have any experience in the field of

aluminum ship building Since most of the top managements are all from the same

company, they prefer to hire their co-workers / friends and put them in higher position even they don’t qualify.

Workers will just tolerate their mañana habit because of the lack of supervision
