The Flu Season’s Deadly Report for 2019

• There have been 310,011 laboratory confirmed cases of Influenza in Australia for 2019 (January 1 - December 17, 2019)

• 812 people died as a direct result of the flu

• The estimated death toll related to the flu was 4,200** in 2019 (January 1 - December 17, 2019)

The Flu Vaccine Saves Lives

The flu is a highly contagious viral infection that can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications, including pneumonia. Research has shown that flu vaccination reduces the risk of flu illness by between 40 and 60 percent.

People Who are Most at Risk

The flu can be a severe disease for healthy people, but can be especially serious for people more at risk like pregnant women, people 65 and over, children under 5, people with certain medical conditions and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Immunisation is the best possible protection against influenza and the most important way we can reduce the number of flu infections and deaths.

Who should be immunised against the flu?

Immunisation is recommended for people who work or live in close contact with those who have an underlying medical condition or impaired immunity to minimise the spread of the flu. The Australian Immunisation Handbook recommends the following ‘at risk’ people be vaccinated:

• Health care workers• People with a BMI greater than 30• Staff in long-term care facilities or nursing homes• People who live with, or care for someone who has

a chronic illness or is aged over 65 years• Essential services workers• People who work with children• Anyone visiting parts of the world where flu is

circulating, especially if traveling in a group

How does the flu vaccine work?Influenza viruses change every year because the virus has a unique ability to change its surface structure. This means that even if you had the flu or an immunisation one year, your body’s immune system might be unable to fight the changed version of the virus that will be circulating the following year.

Each year, a new vaccine is developed (usually called the seasonal vaccine) and is available for those who wish to be immunised. The seasonal influenza vaccine includes protection against four strains of influenza.

Recent evidence suggests protection against influenza may start to decrease from three to four months following vaccination. Annual vaccination before the onset of each influenza season is recommended. While influenza continues to circulate, it is never too late to vaccinate.

The influenza vaccine cannot give you the flu because it does not contain the live virus. Some people may still contract the flu because the vaccine may not protect against all strains of the influenza virus circulating in the community.

Recent evidence suggests protection against influenza may start to decrease from three to four months following vaccination.

Following the Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee (AIVC) meeting on 9 October 2019, it was determined that all quadrivalent influenza vaccines are recommended to contain the following strains:

• an A/Brisbane/02/2018 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;

• a B/Washington/02/2019-like (B/Victoria lineage) virus;

• an A/South Australia/34/2019 (H3N2)-like virus; and

• a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like (B/Yamagata lineage) virus.

AusHealth Work will be providing Afluria® Quad to clients in the 2020 flu season. Afluria® Quad is an Australian-made vaccine and is manufactured as recommended by the AIVC and World Health Organisation to immunise against the predominant strains anticipated to be circulating in the southern hemisphere in 2020.

This is one of the vaccines to be used by the Australian Government under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). In case of supply concerns, AusHealth does have access to alternate suppliers.

Influenza Vaccine Pharmacy Vouchers

11

In addition to on-site clinics, AusHealth Work offers influenza vaccine pharmacy vouchers in partnership with leading national pharmacies.

Vouchers offer a flexible alternative for clients in remote areas, or where there may be employees on a rotating shift roster, out of regular business hours.

Vouchers can also be used as a ‘catch up’ option for employees who may have missed out on the on-site flu vaccination clinic. Please be aware vouchers cannot be substituted for vaccines ordered but not used on the day of the clinic.

Clients can request and book vouchers online at our website, and AusHealth Work will send through the requested number of vouchers to the nominated contact person.

From there, employees can visit the website of the relevant pharmacy and book the vaccination time that suits, quoting the unique voucher codes. For all clients using vouchers, we encourage booking early as pharmacies may have limited number of vaccines and AusHealth Work has no control over the supply of vaccines at individual pharmacies.

Managing riskThere are inherent risks in offering any health service, and therefore an effective risk management plan is key to providing quality service. AusHealth maintains off-site vaccination clinic policies and procedures to ensure efficient, safe and high-quality vaccine clinics. These procedures are developed in accordance with relevant state and territory requirements, evidence-based research and recommendations from the Australian Immunisation Handbook. AusHealth Work immunisation nurses are experienced, well prepared, educated and supported so our clients can be assured of a positive vaccine clinic experience.

Serious reactions to vaccines, such as anaphylaxis, are very rare (<0.01%) and usually happen within 15 minutes of vaccination. AusHealth Work Nurses are all registered immunisation providers and as such can recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and other less serious post-vaccination reactions. They are provided with an appropriate medical toolkit and if needed, can liaise and receive further advice from our Supervising Medical Officer.

This means each attending immunisation nurse has the experience and support to ensure a safe vaccination clinic, and the health and wellbeing of your team.

Current controls in place for clinical risks include:

• Real-time access to the Australian Immunisation Handbook which provides clinical guidelines for immunisation providers

• Screening tools to ensure vaccination program participants are screened adequately for allergies and possible reactions

• Process management (from sourcing the vaccine through to post administration service)

• Continuous improvement of communication

• Creating a culture ensuring and promoting safety and quality

• Ensuring documented consent is acquired from participants prior to administration

• Emergency equipment checks to ensure equipment is on hand in the case of anaphylaxis

• Infection control and hygiene practices are implemented

• Strict cold chain management of vaccines

• Adverse event and incident reporting systems in place and actioned

• Recruitment processes in place to ensure nurses are currently AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) registered, immunisation certified, and hold a current CPR certificate
