CASE STUDYCENTRAL PLAZAIn collaboration with Haron Robson, Aurora has created a distinctive lighting scheme for Central Plaza One, the fifth tallest building in Brisbane. The original foyer lighting was derived from ancient, traditional Japanese lanterns and was designed by renowned Japanese architect Kurokawa Kisho. The new LED solution comprised of various sizes of custom built LED Panels that delivered energy savings and kept the original spirit of the installation alive.

UGR - Unified Glare RatingThe UGR method (Unified Glare Rating) is an international index which is used to evaluate and limit the psychological direct glare from luminaires.

Contrary to previous methods where the glare was rated using the luminance values of a single luminaire, this method calculates the glare of the entire lighting installation at a defined observer position.

Demonstrations show that productivity in the workplace improves with the application of a suitable lighting scheme.

Products featuring Colour Xchange technology allow the creation of application-specific environments, ranging from a warm 2700K, to a neutral 4000K, to a cool 6500K to suit mood, task or time of day.

Task areas are expected to have an illuminance of 500 lux on the working plane with a glare rating of UGR19. A task-specific light source can introduce the lighting levels where needed, aided by a suitable colour temperature.

150 years ago most of our time was spent under natural daylight. Today most of us spend 90 percent of our time indoors.

Throughout the day, daylight changes constantly in quantity, directional characteristics, colour temperature and colour rendering.

Daylight has the ability to invigorate and promote a sense of well being within people. The therapeutic quality of natural lighting has never been in doubt however we have not really understood how or why, until recently. Probably the most important finding is that light controls our biological or body clock through regular light-dark rhythms, known as the circadian rhythm.

Aurora's m10™CX offers the only single-source colour mixing LED chip found in any fire rated downlight. This chip allows for both high-quality illumination with an ErP compliant Colour Rendering Index of Ra80 and the benefits attributed to a single point light source of a controlled beam, without the overshadowing seen in multichip luminaires.

Aurora CX lighting is fully tuneable using a two channel control. The change of colour temperature and light intensity is achieved by mixing the light output of two groups of LEDs (2700K and 6500K). Changing the light output of these two groups varies the colour temperature, so colour temperature can vary seamlessly between these two values.

Full dimming and colour temperature can be controlled independently of each other to create the desired lighting effect.

FUNCTIONSTRYKER - IRELANDStryker is one of the world’s leading medical technology companies offering a diverse array of innovative medical technologies, including orthopaedics, medical and surgical products, supplying to more than 100 countries around the world.

Aurora worked together with Stryker and Bilfinger, the appointed facility management partner, to review the existing lighting installation at the Stryker premises in Limerick and to propose a more energy-efficient LED lighting solution.

The premises in Limerick have a production facility and an office area. In the office areas, VersiTile™ LED flat panels were used in a point-for-point replacement to replace traditional fluorescent fittings. On the production floor, the team had an opportunity to significantly reduce the number of fittings from 228 to 130 by replacing the original luminaires with more powerful but highly efficient Ostia™ LED high bays.

The upgrade of lighting at Stryker Limerick has delivered a reduction in energy consumption to date on this site of 243,613kWh on the production floor and a further 349,500kWh in the remainder of the plant. This is a massive total of 593,113kWhs per annum.

As it takes 2.5 kWh of primary energy to deliver 1 kWh of electrical energy to the site, the primary energy savings at Stryker Limerick is 1,482,784.9kWh per annum.

When positioning accent lighting, use track to gain flexibility and build in future proofing. Precise focusing can be easily achieved and refurbishment is then not necessary when minor changes are made to the shop layout. Suspended track can allow luminaires to be positioned well below the actual ceiling height without installing an expensive ceiling. It can also be used to visually reduce the appearance of very tall voids.

Three circuit track system features a circuit selector on the track adaptor which allows one of three circuits to be selected. This means that the scheme can have up to three different combinations of luminaires on at any one time. Ideal for different times of day or year, they create different scenes for different activities (main trading or shelf stacking) resulting in energy saving.

Cables allow ‘plug and play,’ which greatly simplifies installation, reducing the need to hard wire and therefore contractors’ time and costs. The cable is 3-pole, LSOH (low smoke zero halogen)

In the luminaire section of this brochure the symbol indicates the luminaire is supplied fitted with industry standard 3-pole connector. Use two-way connector to enable through wiring / Loop in Loop out, or the 5 way to star wire.

Emergency lighting is usually battery operated and can be either self-contained (Battery/Inverter mounted inside the fitting) or through a central battery system (Large battery either running the whole building or small batteries running separate floors).

Glossary of Lighting Terms

AC (Alternating Current) The flow of electricity (electric current) in a circuit that alternates direction every second with a standard current frequency of 50 Hz (Hertz or cycles/second).

Accent Lighting Lighting that is used to accent a particular object or feature and for it to be effective, accent lighting should be approximately four or five times the level of ambient light within the space.

Ambient Lighting Uniform background lighting of a space without providing for any localised directional lighting requirements.

Beam Angle The angle between the opposed points either side of the beam axis where the luminous intensity reaches a value of 50% that of the peak beam intensity.

Candela (cd) The measure of luminous intensity of a light source in a given direction.

Chromaticity Is an objective specification of the quality of colour regardless of its luminance.

Colour Rendering Index (CRI) or Ra (Rendering Average). The ability of a light source to render colours accurately and is measured by the Colour Rendering Index on a scale of 0-100. The higher the number the more accurately the light source can render colour.

Colour Temperature The measure of the colour appearance of a light source which describes the apparent warmth or coolness of that light source. Generally, light sources are described as 2700K - Extra warm white, 3000K - Warm white, 4000K - Cool white, 5000K Daylight white, 6000K - Cool daylight. The letter “K” refers to Kelvin. The term can also be referred to as Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT).

Constant Current A circuit in which the current remains constant but the voltage may vary.

Colour Exchange Colour temperature adjustment from 2700K - 6500K

Constant Voltage A circuit in which the voltage remains constant but the current may vary.

Cylindrical Illuminance The amount of vertical illuminance that falls on a cylindrical surface positioned within a space.

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a two way communication system protocol for lighting that allows addressed ballasts to receive and send signals in order to provide a flexible controlled lighting solution.

DC (Direct Current) An electric current that moves in one direction without changing or cycling and is usually supplied from a battery, DC Transformer or Photovoltaic (PV) Cells.

Dichroic Reflector A reflector or filter that transmits certain wavelengths but reflects other wavelengths. In lighting fixtures, dichroic reflectors transmit infra-red light backward through the rear of the lamp whilst reflecting visible light forward, resulting in cooler visible light source and can be considered as “Cool Beam”.

Dimmer A device in an electrical circuit used for varying the brightness of a light source within a lighting installation.

Direct Lighting Lighting provided from a light source without reflection that distributes at least 90% of luminous flux in a downward direction.

Downlight A ceiling based light fitting either, recessed or surface mounted which concentrates the light in a downward direction.

Emergency Lighting Lighting used in the event of power failure for whatever reason. Luminaire types are usually either stand alone Non-maintained operation (Emergency use only) or mains converted Maintained operation (Mains + Emergency use).

Extra Low Voltage IEC defined where the electrical potential does not exceed 25 Volts RMS for AC or 60 Volts DC.

Fire Rated A recessed fitting that maintains the integrity of a fire rated ceiling in compliance of the Building Regulations – Part B on Fire Safety.

Glare is an interference with visual perception with the result of excessive contrast of luminance within the field of view which can result in anything from a mild discomfort through to impairment of vision. There are two forms of glare – Discomfort Glare & Disability Glare.

High Frequency (HF) Control Gear Electronic control equipment that operates fluorescent lamps at a high frequency of 30-60kHz compared to a mains supply 50Hz. Increasing the frequency provides instant starting, removes stroboscopic effect (flickering) and provides for a more energy efficient circuit with increased quality of illumination. Can also be used in conjunction with some HID lamps.

Indirect Lighting Lighting provided by reflection, usually from wall or ceiling surfaces. Luminaires are usually either wall mounted or ceiling suspended distributing light upward which is reflected by the ceiling and walls to provide ambient illumination.

Ingress Protection (IP) ratings, developed by the European Committee for Electro Technical Standardisation, are used to specify the environmental protection an enclosure provides to the electrical equipment inside it. An IP Rating normally has two numbers associated with it: (1) protection from solid objects or materials (like dust) and (2) protection from liquids (like water).

Intumescent material Material used within Fire Rated Downlights and gaskets, it expands to form a fire rated barrier once exposed to fire.

Kelvin The standard unit for the measurement of Colour Temperature. The unit “Kelvin” is the basis upon which all temperature measurement is undertaken starting at “absolute zero”. The Kelvin chart mirrors that of degrees Celsius where zero Kelvin equates to -273.15°Celsius.

Kilowatt (kW) Measure of electrical power which equals 1000 Watts.

L70 Life The point at which the LED's output has reduced to 70% of it's original value, usually measured in thousands-of-hours. LED light sources depreciate slowly over time rather than simply failing. As an example, a 1000 lumen LED luminaire at L70 to 35,000 hours will deliver at least 700 lumens after 35,000 hours of operation.


Glossary of Lighting Terms

L90 Life The point at which the LED's output has reduced to 90% of it's original value, usually measured in thousands-of-hours. LED light sources depreciate slowly over time rather than simply failing. As an example, a 1000 lumen LED luminaire at L90 to 35,000 hours will deliver at least 900 lumens after 35,000 hours of operation.

Lamp An artificial light source used in conjunction with appropriate fittings.

LED (Light-emitting diode) Small semiconductor device that emits light with the advantages of low operation costs, compact size and long life.

Light Output Ratio (LOR) The ratio of light emitted by a luminaire to the total light output of the lamps it contains.

Lighting Efficacy A term relating to the amount of luminous flux emitted by a light source multiplied by the Light Output Ratio of the luminaire against the total amount of energy consumed (light source and any associated control gear) to produce the light. A measure of the total systems efficacy.

LM-79 - LM-80 LM-79 lighting measurement standard published by the IESNA in 2008 that provide specific practices for LED testing performance. LM-80 designates uniform test methods for measuring lumen maintenance for LEDs.

Lumen The SI derived unit of luminous flux, a basic measurement for light and is the amount of light emitted by a light source in all directions.

Lumen Maintenance A measurement of how a lamp maintains its light output over time (see L70 Life and L90 Life).

Luminance The amount of visible light leaving a point on a surface in a given direction, which can be either a physical or an imaginary plane and is the measured brightness of that surface which can be due to reflection and/or transmission and/or emission. The unit of measurement is candelas/metre²Solar Disk at Noon = 1.6 x 109 cd/m²Average Clear Sky = 8,000cd/m²Average Cloudy Day = 2,000cd/m²

Luminaire A fitting which emits light by use of connecting a light source to the required power supply.

Luminous Flux The total light output emitted by a light source or received by a surface. Commonly known as lumens. Unit of measurement is lumens. Lux Is the international unit for illumination measured in lumens per square metre.

The MacAdam Ellipse is a system of colour measurement and measures how much colour variation is possible before the human eye detects a difference in colour temperature between light sources. A series of ellipses can be drawn around a target colour and the closer the lamp is to the target, the lower the colour deviation that will be experienced when viewing the lamp compared to a lamp of the target colour temperature. Measured in SDCM (Standard Deviation of Colour Matching) with 1 step having no difference, 2-3 steps will have an unnoticeable difference and 6 step is required for ERP.

Maintenance Factor The result of time lumen dependent depreciation effects must be considered in the initial design. Factor calculated into the initial installation to take account of the fitting and environment depreciation over time.

Maintained illuminance is the value below which the average illuminance is not allowed to fall. When a lighting installation is planned, account needs to be taken of the fact that as time moves forward, the environment depreciates and luminaires become less efficient. As a result, illuminance decreases and to compensate the new installation needs to be designed to a higher value. Maintained Illuminance = Maintenance Factor x Illuminance on installation.

Modelling The use of light to create uniform illumination for three-dimensional objects.

Pulse Width Modulation LEDs can be dimmed in two ways: analog and pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming. Analog dimming changes LED light output by simply adjusting the DC current in the string, while PWM dimming achieves the same effect by varying the duty cycle of a constant current in the string to effectively change the average current in the string.

Power Factor is the ratio of the real power to apparent power and represents how much real power electrical equipment utilises. It is a measure of how effectively electrical power is being used. It is always between 0.0 & 1.0 and commercial installations with a low Power Factor and on a kVA tariff will have a greater energy consumption than a similar installation with a high Power Factor.

Ra (Rendering Average) (see Colour Rendering Index).

Task Lighting Lighting that is designed into an application to illuminate an area used for carrying out a specific task.

Transformer A device used to raise (step up) or lower (step down) the electric voltage.

The Unified Glare Rating (UGR) was developed by the International Commission on Illumination CIE (Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage). It is a complicated calculation being undertaken for each observer within the space taking into account the dimensions of the space and the position and type of all luminaires. The lower the UGR value, the lower the glare. The maximum accepted value for commercial offices is a value of 19.

Uniformity The ratio of the minimum illuminance achieved within a space to that of the average achieved illuminance measured across the whole of the same space.

Visual Performance The ability to perceive detail and carry out visual tasks within an environment.

Volt Drop Difference in voltage along a circuit length. Voltage drop becomes a problem with Low Voltage wiring and small cable, resulting in a reduction of intensity of the light source at the far end of the run.

Watt The unit for measuring electrical power. It defines the rate of energy consumption by an electrical device when it is in operation. In single phase circuits, it is related to volts and amps by the formula: Volts x Amps x P.F. = Watts. (Note: For AC circuits, P.F. must be included.)

Our downlights include pre-fitted fixing springs for installation in ceilings. Easy removal allows for re-decoration or maintenance.

The installation of Aurora products should only be carried out by a competent person in accordance with the instructions supplied with the product and relevant Australian standards e.g. the current wiring rules AS/NZS 3000:2007 including Amendment 1 - July 2009 and Amendment 2 - December 2012. As an example, a 1000 lumen LED luminaire, 25,000hrs to L70 will deliver at least 700 lumens after 6 years, based on 4000 burning hours / year.

All warranty periods start from the date of purchase and are based on 4000 burning hours / year. We ask our clients to retain proof of date and place of purchase. This will be required should the customer need to make a claim under both extended warranties and standard warranties.
