The Decay Data Evaluation Project – an international cooperation in the

field of nuclear data

History

• Following the increasing demand of users for basic nuclear data, such as half-life, decay mode and branching, energy and probabilities of transitions an international collaboration was initiated in 1995 by CEA/LNHB (France), PTB (Germany), KRI (Russia) and INEEL, LBNL and BNL (USA): Decay Data Evaluation Project (DDEP).

• The GOAL: to produce carefully evaluated nuclear and atomic decay data for the radionuclides of interest, data that are reliable and accurate, with free access for the worldwide users (nuclear power industry, environmental monitoring, nuclear medicine, radionuclide metrology etc.)

• At the General Meeting (Oxford, September 2005) of the International Committee for Radionuclide Metrology (ICRM) the Delegates formally approved the recommendation made by the Nuclear Data Working Group of using the DDEP evaluated decay data in all future nuclear data studies.

Evaluated Data-Half-life, Q

-Decay scheme, levels (E, spin and parity), branching ratios, production mode

-Energy and transition probabilities (α,β,EC, γ,X), photon emission intensities, ICCs,

-Energy and emission probabilities of Conversion electrons and Auger electrons

-log ft and type of beta transition

-Fluorescence yields

Data Evaluation Rules

The adopted data evaluation rules are: Critical analysis of published results Results without uncertainties are not used One result per laboratory included Rejection of some values is always discussed Private communications are, a priori, not accepted,

except in the exceptional case where there is no published value available

Some uncertainties affecting individual results can be “revisited” in the light of the Guide to the expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (BIPM GUM)

Statistical process

Evaluation Tools

• Software: SAISUNUC (CEA/LNHB) with other tools: BrIcc, Lweight, Emission, Emi-X, log ft etc.

• Each evaluation of a radionuclide has two files: Tables and Comments; peer-review process before its publication in the DDEP free online database: NUCLEIDE (www.nucleide.org)

Publications

•The BIPM-5 series is published by the BIPM on behalf of the Consultative Committee for Ionizing Radiation (CCRI). The aim is to review various topics that are of importance for the measurement of ionizing radiation and radioactivity, in particular, those techniques normally used by participants in international comparisons. It is hoped that these publications will prove to be useful reference volumes both for those who are already engaged in this field and for those who are approaching such measurements for the first time.

• The purpose of the Monographie BIPM-5 is to present the recommended values of nuclear decay data for a wide range of radionuclides.
