PAUL BROWN DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2014-15

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 7020

Fellow Rotarians and Friends

I t is my pleasure to congratulate President-Elect Anette and her Administration as they assume the Leadership of the Rotary Club of St.

Thomas II, for the administrative year 2014-15. I can feel the excitement and energy already, and no doubt you too wait expectantly to assume the reins of Leadership of your Club. It is going to be a year full of activity as our Rotary International President-Elect Gary Huang has asked us to go out there and “Light up Rotary”. We will do this through our various efforts to Grow and Strengthen our Clubs, Increase and Focus our Humanitarian Service in our communities and as we do this, we must make our Rotary experience a Family of Rotary experience. Involve everybody in your wider Rotary community. Tell your Rotary Story! That way, we will attract persons to come and want to join with us; and truly allow us to give even more ‘Service above Self”. Let us also “Inspire Youth….Build Rotary”. Our New Generation represents the Next Generation of District Leaders. We must nurture them, guide them and inspire them to realize their full potential. As you go forward this year, seek to roll out a powerful Youth Program in your Club. I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed; indeed they will make you proud and strengthen your Club. Above all, President Anette, make this your special year; make it an enjoyable one for you and your members. Have fun while doing so and at the end, your goal is to leave office with a better Club than when you started the year. I send you my very best wishes and I look forward to working with you. I am prepared to give you all the support required to make you proud of your year, “The Best Year” yet, for the Rotary Club of St. Thomas II.

P.O. Box 304822

St. Thomas USVI 00803

July 2, 2014

Dear President Anette:

Congratulations to you, the Board of Directors and the members of the Rotary

Club of St. Thomas II on the 36th installation of its officers.

The annual installation of officers allows the club members to strengthen their

commitment to the Rotary Movement and to follow their new leadership as they

strive to achieve the Rotary Goals for the New Year.

The Rotary International theme “Light up Rotary” allows for

every Rotarian to light up their service to their community in

many ways. It also allows each one of us to be a beacon in our

vocation and make our community a brighter place through

Rotary.

Additionally as our District Governor Paul’s theme “Inspire Youth--- Build

Rotary” encourages us to go forth and work closer with our New

Generations Groups; we are again challenged to further embrace

our Rotaractors and Interactors.

I know that my fellow Rotarians will continue to promote the

values of Rotary International proudly as they have done in the past.

Yours in Rotary,

Michael S. Toussaint

Assistant District Governor

District 7020, USVI North

Past President, Rotary Club of St. Thomas II

My Fellow Rotarians,

I am grateful for this opportunity to serve as the 36th President of

the Rotary Club of St. Thomas II. I am aware of the huge

responsibility that comes with the title and position, and it is my

intention to serve honorably and with dedication.

Rotary’s International President, Gary C.K. Huang, selected the

theme “Light Up Rotary” for the 2014-2015 Rotary year. As

Rotarians we are challenged to Light up Rotary by sharing our

service, strengthening our clubs and letting our light shine in our

communities. It is around this theme that the goals and plans for

this year originated. However in order to succeed, the help of all

Rotarians is needed. Installation ceremonies are usually filled with

pomp and circumstance for the incoming president and board, but

more importantly they provide an opportunity for Rotarians to

rededicate themselves to Rotary. So, today I am asking that you

renew your passion for Rotary and become more involved in the

activities that define us as Rotarians. Whether it is service to the

youths, elderly, or other humanitarian projects we need to be visible

in our community carrying out the mandate of President Gary C.K.

Huang to “Light Up Rotary”.

I look forward to working with you as we live our motto of Service

above Self!

Yours in Rotary Service

Anette Williams, President

History of The Rotary Club of St. Thomas II

R otary came to the Virgin Islands with the chartering of

The Rotary Club of St. Thomas in 1957. In 1975, several

members of The Rotary Club of St. Thomas began urging

for the organization of a second club. Efforts in this direction

were unsuccessful until Rotary International changed its policy

of geographical separation to permit clubs to share the same

geographical area.

During 1978, President Costas Coulianos released the following

seven members from The Rotary Club of St. Thomas, some of whom were Past

Presidents, and charged them with establishing a second club: Macon M.

Berryman, Leslie Cooper, Thomas J. Lawrence. Dr. Eric L. O'Neil, PP Rabbi Stanley

T. Relkin, Patrick M. Rice, and Jack Weinberger. At that time, Dave Maas, the

founder and Past President of The Rotary Club of St. Thomas was residing in

North Carolina but continuing the practice of law on St. Thomas during part of

the year. Dave was an honorary member of the club and was asked to assist in

this organization effort. Thus Dave served as Organizing President and Macon as

Organizing Vice-President.

In the spring of 1979, Dave Maas called a meeting to include himself, Macon M.

Berryman, Les Cooper, Tom Lawrence, Bob Noble, Eric O'Neal, Patrick M. Rice

and Rabbi Stanley Relkin-all members of The Rotary Club of St. Thomas, at the

request of then President Costas Coulianos, to further explore the possibilities of

starting a second club. The result of that meeting was the inception of The Rotary

Club of St. Thomas II. Macon M. Berryman was the founder and Dave Maas was

the Club's first President. Patrick M. Rice was affectionately known as the

Godfather of the new club, with his official position being Club Secretary. The

other charter members included Kendrick Bragg, Darwin Crequé, Joe Davis, Sr.,

Bob Davis, Hank Feuerzeig, Steve Gegus, Frank McLaughlin, Aubrey Nelthrop, Leo

Penha and Dick Spenceley, a total of 18 members. Jack Weinberger passed on

before the new club was formed.

The first provisional meeting for Rotary II was held on April 4, 1979 at the Virgin

Isle Hotel. Wednesday noon was chosen as the meeting day and time.

The Rotary Club of St. Thomas II was chartered on April 14, 1979, and the charter

document was actually presented at the District Conference Banquet on May 19,

1979. Archie Ogden was the first member installed after the charter was awarded.

Hank Feuerzeig, Charter Member, and Archie Ogden have continued as members

of the Rotary Club of St. Thomas II ever since they were inducted 36 years ago.

And we have been going strong ever since!

R otarian Anette graduated from the College of the Virgin Islands in 1984

with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting. She has had a long

career in community banking having joined First Virgin Islands Federal

Savings Bank (FVI) in 1987 as its Assistant Controller. In 2000 when FVI

was acquired by FirstBank Puerto Rico, she held the position of VP – Finance

and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with responsibility for the Loan Servicing,

Human Resources and Accounting departments. After four years with

FirstBank supervising its accounting area, Anette decided to try a different

industry and joined an EDC company. One year later when that EDC

company closed its doors, she joined Merchants Financial, LLC where she

participated in the organization of Merchants Commercial Bank (MCB).

Today she is the Vice President of Operations and CFO of MCB; a position

she has held since the bank opened its doors in 2006. In this capacity, Anette

serves as the Bank’s IT officer, Security Officer, Compliance Officer, and

Secretary to the Board of Directors.

During her tenure at FVI, Anette worked with two Rotarians and received the

inspiration to join Rotary. She is eternally grateful for the sponsorship of

Assistant District Governor Mike Toussaint which allowed her to become a

Rotarian in 1997. She has held various positions including Treasurer (two

terms), Vice-President, and Director.

Anette attends Memorial Moravian Church where she is a member of the

choir and adult steel orchestra, a Sunday School Teacher and Vice-Chair of

the Board of Elders. She also served as the Treasurer of the Virgin Islands

Conference of the Moravian Church from 2003-2012 and President of Iota Phi

lambda Sorority, Epsilon Zeta Chapter from 2006 – 2010.

Anette has been married to Lennox Williams for 31 years. They have two

adult children, Addisnette Williams-Payne and Ovid Williams. They are also

proud “G” parents of three month old Amaia Payne.
