I have tried several times to write an article for this month, and with the events in Israel I have time again and again had to restart. Quite simply, our hearts are in the East. Below is a compilation of pieces and remarks that I have given over the summer. Beginning with this poem by Yehuda Amichai:

An Arab shepherd is searching for his goat on Mount Zion And on the opposite hill I am searching for my little boy.

An Arab shepherd and a Jewish father Both in their temporary failure.

Our two voices met above The Sultan’s Pool in the valley between us.

Neither of us wants the boy or the goat To get caught in the wheels

Of the “Had Gadya” machine. Afterward we found them among the bushes,

And our voices came back inside us Laughing and crying.

Searching for a goat or for a child has always been The beginning of a new religion in these mountains.

Amichai’s words capture the tensions in the land of Israel. Sadly, reality often betrays the poem’s uplifting end. Too many children have been caught in the “Had Gadya machine” – a never-ending cycle of violence in which each consecutive generation suffers. The current conflict began this way, with the kidnapping and slaying of three Israeli teens – Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Sha’ar and Naftali Frankel. Followed by the revenge killing of Mohammed Khdeir.

Their deaths unleashed a wave of violence. Rockets from Gaza brought terror to Israeli citizens, while retaliatory Israeli airstrikes

and ground efforts led to civilian casualties. From a distance we shed tears at these four tragic deaths, and the ensuing violence.

The Psalmist wrote, “Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.” Difficult as it may seem, we must channel our sorrow to honor the memory of those who have died.

We sow our tears and take heart recognizing the power of community. Our Temple Family found strength organizing the community memorial for Eyal, Gilad and Naftali. Members from our congregation have actively advocated for Israel – sharing stories with friends and loved ones. These events have brought us closer together as a people.

We sow our tears and cry out on behalf of Israel and work to support Israel. Heartbroken for the loss of life on both sides, we are responsible to stand up for Israel. This conflict is one with moral clarity. We want the world to see that one side uses its citizens as shields for missiles, while the other shields its citizens from missiles.

In support of Israel, many have called family and friends in Israel, letting them know that we stand together. Recognizing that summer conflict disrupts tourism and creates long-term negative economic ramifications, I encourage everyone to purchase goods made in Israel, and those sold by Israeli vendors.

We sow tears, and teach others that hatred in all forms is destructive. The parents of Eyal, Gilad and Naftali inspire us with their courage by withholding calls for vengeance. We must respect each other, if we are to be partners in peace. It is time to break the cycle of violence, understanding that a temporary cease-fire is not enough.

We sow our tears, and must tend to the seeds that we planted. Motivated today by sorrow, we must keep the momentum going, finding energy from the hope of creating a better world. In this way we will nurture the seeds of love and peace that have been planted as a lasting tributes to the lives lost.

May we soon see the world reap joy, after the tears that have been shed.

As I write this month’s voice article, it’s been 12 days since I left Israel and I’m still wrapping my head around the events that took place while I was there. Despite the tragedies that took place and are still taking place, it was a spectacular and dramatic week in Israel reconnecting with my colleagues, my family, my teachers and the

land.

I returned to Israel to attend the American Conference of Cantors’ (ACC) annual convention. It was a week filled with numerous opportunities for learning the latest trends in Israeli society and culture; with traveling from one end of the country to the other in search of insight and inspiration; with listening to the newest music coming from Israel; with singing sacred songs alongside our Israeli brothers and sisters; and, finally, with praying.

Included in our experiences was a workshop and tour of BINA, a secular Yeshiva meaning wisdom. BINA is the leading organization at the intersection of Jewish Pluralism & Social Action in Israel. The organization strives to strengthen Israel as a democratic pluralistic society, by emphasizing Judaism as a culture, through Jewish values of Tikkun Olam.

At the Leo Beck school in Haifa we attended the concert of Arab and Jewish teenagers making music and building bridges together. This was a window into the “other” Israel that we do not hear about on CNN. There are Israeli and Arab teenagers who make music promoting peace. Young people who very simply see the humanity in the other and see another way. The group is called Heartbeat.

Heartbeat unites these teenagers to build critical understanding, develop creative nonviolent tools for social change, and amplify their voices to influence the world around them.

The highlight of my visit was co-leading a service held at the Kotel with Women of the Wall. Women of the Wall’s mission is to achieve the social and legal recognition of the rights, as women, to wear prayer shawls, pray and read from the Torah collectively and out loud at the Western Wall. They meet monthly on Rosh Chodesh to pray and sing together and they joined the women of the ACC as we gathered to pray. In the past those who opposed Women of the Wall have held demonstrations, yelling, spitting and throwing objects at the women. Yes, we were yelled at to leave but it didn’t escalate beyond that. We wore our tallitot, held up our siddurim, and prayed strong with our voices over all of the chaos around us. The men in our group created for us a wall of protection behind us and we all felt their strength with the angels singing on high above this holy ground. It was an incredibly moving morning I will never forget.

The last night was a triumphant final gala concert at the gorgeous YMCA hall across from the King David hotel. It was an array of Jewish music --traditional chazzanut, Yiddish, Jazz, Ladino, tributes to Arik Einstein and Naomi Shemer, and much more. It was called Kaleidoscope. And it was stunning.

The last day we gathered for a final service and goodbye overlooking Jerusalem--a dazzling view...with tears in my eyes as the conflict with Hamas was heating up. Back safely at home, my heart breaks for Israel….A Jew has to hope. Giving into despair is not an option. I pray that peace will arrive soon for both sides.

BBYO in Naples is beginning to heat up with anticipation for the start of another great term. This summer Naples teens are taking part in various summer programs focused on a wide array of topics like leadership and volunteering.

The BBYO teens eagerly await the beginning of the fall which will kick off with an amazing Naples Kick-off Extravaganza & Parent Information Meeting that will take place on August 24. This summer, Naples teens are actually working together in two committees: a steering committee that will oversee the planning of our local Kickoff and a J Serve committee which will begin brainstorming ideas for our day of community service next Spring.

Regionally, the Naples BBYO teens are really excited to reunite with

all of their friends from across the region at North Florida Region’s Kickoff Boat Party on August 31st. Teens will set sail and embark on a fun night filled with dancing and smiles.

Lastly, teens are really pumped for an upcoming convention that brings the three regions of Florida together again for the first time in ten years! The convention, entitled “The Big Three: Leave Your Mark”, will give BBYO teens from all across the state the option to learn about recruitment, Jewish enrichment, or leadership. This incredible opportunity will take place at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida from September 12th through the 14th. You won’t want to miss it!

Summer Season is Very ProductiveWith our “Season” in the past and our snowbirds up North, Temple Shalom is still very active. Much planning and many activities are happening. The planning includes new programs and projects for the upcoming Season

such as game night, scholar-in-resident weekend, major fundraisers, planned giving programs and recognition processes, community events and speakers, new education programs and workshops.

In addition to summer activities such as Shabbat at the Beach, Torah study, preschool summer camp, and Shabbat services, the clergy, staff and the Board of Trustees, together with Temple members, have been busy implementing many important enhancements at the Temple and have also been engaged in:

• Refreshing and updating both kitchens for better utilization

• Refreshing the look of the Perman Library with new furniture, carpet, window coverings and accessories

• Updating the youth lounge with new window coverings

• Landscaping at both the religious school and the main Temple entrance

• Launching of a new website for the Religious School which allows the parents to register and pay their fees on-line. This new website can be accessed through the Temple website.

• Launching of an updated website for the Preschool to aid in registration and payment and to announce all of their programs and activities

• Upgrading the Temple website to also allow members to access their records, empowering them to make profile changes, make

contributions to specific or general funds, and make tributes in honor or memory of someone and to view and pay their invoices. It also allows members to contribute to the Temple above and beyond their normal contribution.

• Enriching of the Religious School B’nai Mitzvah program by reducing the amount of time the students spend at the Temple on Wednesdays and increasing the quality time with the Cantor for their tutoring.

• Receiving and placing of a valuable art statue donated by a Temple family to be placed on Temple grounds.

• Launching the Shabbat Dinner program as envisioned by the One Family Team.

• Launching the search committee for an Executive Director

• Formed advisory boards for both the religious school and the preschool.

Our Sisterhood is working to help the Temple grow with new ideas for fundraising and programming. Our Men’s Club is actively engaging the Temple family in recreational activities, educational lectures and meetings for the benefit of our Temple members. Both the Men’s Club and the Sisterhood are playing important roles in the funding of the new projects and activities of the Temple and in the support of the Temple’s growth.

Yes, the Temple is an exciting place! We are truly a four season, year-around organization. Throughout the summer, we see engaged members, encouraging smiles, and helpful individuals that make us One Family at Temple Shalom. We are being connected to one another through worship, education and activities that promote and encourage Jewish life. Get involved and let us know what your passion is.

We are going back to the Religious Action Center (RAC) in Washington, D.C. this year, December 5-8, 2014! Rabbi Miller will be taking our 10th, 11th and 12th graders to participate in the nationally acclaimed L’taken Seminar, which enables students to explore public policy and social activism through a Jewish lens and experience our nation’s capital. A portion of this trip is made possible by the generosity of the Temple Shalom Sisterhood and Temple Shalom Men’s Club. There will be an informational meeting for parents and students on August 27th at 5:30pm to discuss the details for this year’s trip. Meanwhile, we will begin our fall programs with a luncheon to be held on Tuesday, October 14 at a venue that I know will be interesting to all members of Sisterhood and their friends. Lots of details to follow!

FYI: Thank you all so very much for bringing in your pop tabs from your cans to help the “Ronald McDonald House.” They are a big help for those that stay at this wonderful place. Please, never throw the tabs away. Store them in a plastic baggie and bring them to the Temple.

Our Sisterhood Book Bag has a great season planned. On Thursday, October 16, we will learn all about “The Lowland,” by Jhumpa Lahiri. Two brothers bound by tragedy. A fiercely brilliant woman haunted by her past. A country torn by revolution. A love that lasts past death. This book is set in India and America and it is a book you will soon forget. So make plans to be here on October 16 at 1:30 p.m.

Who receives complimentary tickets by mail?Temple Shalom Members in good standing.*

I am a Temple Shalom member and I’m not going to use my ticket, can I give it to someone else?

No. Tickets are personalized and are non-transferable. This is to be fair to our committed membership and also for security reasons. We must be aware of each and every person in the Temple during the Holy Days.

Can tickets be purchased for Holy Day Services?Yes, however, seating is limited, so advanced planning is recommended.

What is the cost of a High Holy Day Service ticket?$100.00. This is for one person and includes all the Holy Day Services. If you have never attended High Holy Day Services with us, we will be happy to welcome you as our guest, with complimentary tickets.

Can I apply the ticket price as a credit towards membership?Yes, we encourage you to do just that! It gives you an opportunity to worship with us for a few months before you decide if Temple

Shalom is right for you. This credit will be applied to membership provided you join the Temple by October 31, 2014.

If I can’t afford, or I know of someone who can’t afford the ticket price, can I still come to services?

Yes, provided you contact us in advance, and give us the opportunity to help you. In all cases of special need, we welcome you and will expect you to pay only what you can afford for a ticket and/or for membership. It will be our pleasure to have you worship with us.

*ADDITIONAL INFORMATION… Definition of GOOD STANDING:

“Good standing” means that there are no outstanding financial obligations to the Temple. Also, 25% of the 2014-2015 dues need to be paid by September 2, and any prior year dues balance needs to be brought current. This policy applies unless other arrangements have been made with our Financial Secretary.

Youth Activities Fund:Donations provide financial support for children of our congregation to attend Camp Coleman, to take part in regional/national youth conventions, and to experience a summer in Israel.

PreschoolPreschool Fund:Donations purchase supplies and support activities for the Preschool.

Preschool Enrichment Fund:The enhancement of curriculum, educational programs and experiences.

Arby Lipman Children's Library:Children and adolescent books and magazine subscriptions, and supplies are purchased.

Jack and Charlotte Ward Family Children's Music Shelf:Audio and video musical tapes for children.

EndowmentEndowment Fund:Donations help to secure the future, enrich the programs and provide for emergency needs of the congregation.

Scholar In-Residence Endowment Fund:Supports the endowment established by Shirley and Henry Kraus. This fund enables Temple Shalom to bring visiting scholars to the Temple as an educational benefit to the membership.

The Herbert & Ruth Abramson Fund:To supplement the general operating fund and to provide enrichment for Temple functions.

Clergy/LeadershipRabbi Miller’s Discretionary Fund:For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Rabbi's work.

Cantor Azu's Discretionary Fund:For tzedakah, charitable purposes, and general enhancement of the Cantor's work.

Leadership Fund:Donations are used for the enhancement and enrichment of leadership programs at Temple Shalom.
