OPPORTUNITIES IN WELLINGBOROUGH, RUSHDEN and CORBY Do you have a few hours to spare each month in a very worthwhile volunteering role? Northamptonshire Association for the Blind (NAB) are currently looking to recruit volunteers for a variety of roles which will assist blind and partially sighted people living in your community. The independent countywide charity particularly wants to hear from anyone who could become a Befriender. Many of NAB’s members become isolated or lose their confidence when going out because of their sight loss – by becoming a Befriender YOU can help stop this and make a BIG DIFFERENCE. Tasks a volunteer befriender may assist with include reading mail, newspapers or helping with correspondence. They may also accompany individuals on short walks, take them shopping or help members with maintaining leisure pursuits. For many, becoming a volunteer befriender is about giving back and helping others. NAB stresses that none of their roles are a domestic or personal care role. If you believe you can make a difference, are caring and compassionate, willing to understand about visual impairment and are able to make a regular commitment for a few hours a month then NAB would like to hear from you. Training is given and the charity offers reimbursement for mileage. A DBS check will be completed for all home befrienders at no cost to the volunteer.

To register or find out more contact NAB’s Helpline on 01604 719193. Alternatively call Jean Kinder Volunteer Co-ordinator (North) on mobile 0784131297 or email [email protected]

If you are a member of a group and would like to hear more about the work of the charity, please get in touch to arrange for Jean to come along to your group to give a short talk.

When your world seems to be falling apart …

Phil Wickham is a professional Christian singer. A year ago he was told he needed an operation on his vocal cords: for a month afterwards he wouldn’t be able to speak let alone sing and he was warned that he might never be able to sing professionally again. He remembers thinking: If I can’t sing, then what else can I do? Who am I? After the operation he knelt down and asked God for direction, help and peace – and God spoke directly into his heart: “Phil, you’re my child. I’m your father, trust me.” Phil felt a flood of peace and realised he had nothing to fear. He was full of joy at the sudden understanding that his value lay not in his voice, but in the fact that he was a child of God. The same is true for all of us – our value lies in being a child of God – not in being good at something, or a parent, or having things going right for you. Of course God wants us to live life to the full, but the best way to do that is to remember that first and foremost each of us is a child of God. Reminding yourself regularly that God loves you simply because you are his child is a good antidote to the pressures the world tries to exert on us, and it’s something really solid to hold on to when life gets tough. So enjoy the summer everyone and find time to play, to relax, and above all to enjoy yourself! We are God’s children and he has given us a beautiful world to live in – especially in the summer!

Continuing below is the beginning of an excellent a rticle by Dave Hill of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Colorado, defining the words in comm on use within the church broken up under various headings: These are general terms used in the church that don't fall into the other categories. Advent: From the Latin adventus ("coming"), the period celebrating the coming of Jesus at Christmas. The beginning of the Church Year and the four weeks leading up to and concluding with Christmas (the entire Christmas season). The Colours for Advent are violet or blue. An Advent Wreath is a spe-cial wreath (circle of greens) containing five candles used in churches and homes as reminders of the four Sundays before Christmas. Four of the candles are arranged in a circle, the fifth -- a white candle -- is placed in the centre. By tradition one additional candle is lit each Sunday until on the fourth Sun-day all four candles are lit. On Christmas, the fifth candle is lit. All Saints' Day: November 1; a feast day in the church in commemoration of all the known and un-known saints. Ascension: The Feast commemorating the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ into heaven. This Feast is forty days after Easter and always occurs on a Thursday. The Colour for Ascension are white or gold. Ash Wednesday: A day of special devotion which marks the beginning of the season of Lent, a period of spiritual discipline, fasting and moderation in preparation for Holy Week and Easter. It is one of the most important days of the church year. In the Ash Wednesday service, ashes are lightly smeared onto the forehead of a person by the priest or bishop, as a reminder that "dust thou art, and to dust thou shall return." (BCP pp.264ff)

COFFEE & CHAT. The July Coffee & Chat will be at Tony & Pauline’s, Coppicemoor Farmhouse, Kettering Road, on Tuesday July 5th. Transport can be arranged. The August Coffee & Chat will be at Cliff & Margaret’s, 35 Lower End on Tuesday August 2nd. The September Coffee & Chat will be at Barbara & Alan’s, 3 Isham Road on Tuesday September 6th. CONGRATULATIONS t o Mrs. Stella Block of Isham Road, Pytchley, who celebrates her 90th birthday at the beginning of July.

We have been very busy since Christmas with lots of activities and visitors to the school in between the excellent learning taking place within our wonderful creative curriculum. We celebrated World Book Day with children dressing up in their favourite book character and reading books, RNLI have visited giving a talk on water safety, Kettering Rotary Club are presenting awards to one pupil from each year group who has made an “outstanding contribution to school life” and some of our Junior children have taken part in an inter-school Hockey tournament with other Kettering schools. We continue to receive support with reading from the PAT team (Pets as Therapy) with Sheila and her lovely dog Amber coming in to school weekly to listen to some of our children reading. Our May Day celebrations were a great success this year, we enjoyed glorious weather and raised a fantastic £1286.84, our thanks go to FOPS for all their hard work in organising this and to parents and the wider community for their support. This summer the class trips involve taking children to Twycross Zoo, Woburn Abbey and Drayton Manor Park. Class 2 children enjoyed 3 days at Rock UK activity centre where they took part in various activi-ties such as raft building, abseiling and walking the plank! On Friday 10th June we cele-brated the Queen’s Birthday with a service in Church followed by a range of activities to include cake decorating. At the time of printing we still have spaces in our Reception class for September, please feel free to pass on our details if you know anyone who is looking for a place.

Volunteers sought for Custody Visiting The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is looking for volunteers to join the county’s Independent Custody Visiting scheme. Independent Custody Visitors are volunteers who visit people in custody to check on their welfare, that they are receiving their rights and entitlements and that the conditions they are being held in are satisfactory.

Brian Warmington has been volunteering as an Independent Custody Visitor for 8 years. He said: “I visit detainees in Corby Police Station to ensure all rights are upheld. I had never heard of custody visiting until I read an article in a local paper. I thought this is something I could do as a ‘pay back’ to soci-ety. “It is important that communities have confidence in their local police service and we help provide this community oversight.” The volunteers visit in pairs and follow a rota which means they carry out a minimum of one visit every two months. Volunteers visit the Custody suite in Corby Police Station or the Criminal Justice Centre in Brackmills, Northampton. Detainees are asked a number of questions relating to their welfare and are asked for consent to view their custody records to check everything is being processed and recorded properly. Report forms are completed and sent back to the Office of the Police and Crime Commission, who liaise with the Force about any issues. A training programme is provided for all volunteers and regular meetings are held to have the opportunity to talk about any concerns. Alexa Daly, from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner said: “Independent Custody Visitors play a vital role in maintaining standards of custody and the treatment of detainees. “We’re looking for people to join the scheme who live or work in Northamptonshire and are aged 18 or over. It’s essential that anyone interested is able to be impartial, objective and non-judgemental, as well as being able to communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds.” People interested can apply online at www.northantspcc.org.uk

The deadline for applications is Friday 1st July.

GARDENER’S CORNER JULY /AUGUST 2016 by Alistair Peak

Don’t blink but we are half way through the year and most gardens have

peaked but bursts of colour are still to be seen. Enjoy your gardens.

Hedges add great structure to your garden whether small or large they are wonderful for diffusing the wind, driving rain, keeping areas warmer in the winter and of course for privacy. They come in many different colours and shades of green, purples, yellows and variegated varieties. Importantly they provide a home and larder for wildlife. To keep hedges looking sharp you need to keep on top of hedge cutting, now is the perfect time to do this. Fagus (Beech), Taxus (Yew), Crataegus (Hawthorn) and Ligustrum (Privet) can all be done at this time. Sorry to throw Health and Safety at you but this is the time to make sure that care is taken whether you use petrol or electric trimmers. Make sure you have a RCD unit for electric cables as cutting through would be life threatening, as always take care with petrol. Protect your eyes with goggles and your ears with muffs. Take care when using ladders.

If you are away for your holidays, don’t forget to ask a neighbour to check and water your pots and hanging baskets, move pots into the shade to help make their job easier. Have a good holiday.

There are plenty of fruit and vegetables that are ready for harvesting. Keep

picking and enjoy your fresh produce Pick early in the day as the fruit and vegeta-bles are more flavoursome. Of course there are exceptions to this – strawberries. They are best picked when the sun has warmed them, which raises the sugar and gives extra flavour. If you are away don’t forget to let the kind person who is doing the watering, help themselves to your produce. It’s not too late to sow more salad crops, go for the cut and come varieties and radishes as these will see you well into autumn.

This month can see many of your early summer flowers finish flowering, particularly with herbaceous plant, remove all spent flower shoots and if you have nepeta(cat mint) cut this back to within 6”/15cm of the ground and it will re-shoot fresh growth and flower in September. Many of the Rubeckias are of autumnal shades and add late summer/early autumn colour and if you would like a strong red why not go for Lychnis chalcedonica, it grows 3’/1mtr. tall and is great for mid/back boarder placements.

Gardeners Tip: If you find any gaps in your garden why not visit your local nursery/garden

centre for some ideas of what is around at this time of year. Remember to wait for favourable conditions to plant.
