Summer Youth Career Exploration Program

DaVinci Center Career Exploration Program – DaVinci Center Career Exploration Program during this Summer of 2020 has been carried out as usual with respect for guidance regarding the Corona Virus. Program participants kept the appropriate distance and wore face masks but got through the four week program safely. The pro-gram offers Job Readiness training before placing them in private in-dustries according to their career goals for an internship. DaVinci Center pays the youngsters a small stipend while they gain the expe-rience. Host agencies are Pauly Pentas’ Italian Deli, Triggs Memorial Golf Course, Envisions Eye Care, Savers, Roger Williams Park Mu-seum of Natural History and Planetarium, and Diva Dog Grooming. Guest speakers from various industries also inform them of careers such as Banking, Nursing, Financial Management, Culinary, etc. Some of the youngsters will be retained by the industries they in-terned at. The program is sponsored by the Rhode Island General As-sembly.

We wish all the students who participated in the Career Exploration

Program the best in all their future endeavors as they continue to pursue their dreams.

guided this younger generation.

GRANDPARENTS DAY

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13

Grandparents are special people who offer unconditional love to the lives of their children’s children. Without doubt their compas-sion, advice, love, generosity, and understanding without judge-ment is the perfect formula for their grandchildren. It is the Good Lord’s plan that it be that way. Enjoy Sunday September 13th when we celebrate Grandparents Day throughout America!

In Japanese history there was always a group of “elders” who advised government on matters of policy and in times of crisis. They are usually persons beyond their 70’s who were respected for their specialized knowledge as well as for their life experience. Their wisdom was “golden” and their perspective on life was respected because of their pe-ripheral vision. Today in our country we also respect our elderly popula-tion and we must do all we can to preserve their lives and their minds so that we can gain from their advice to our families and in other aspects of our lives. We introduce programs and events which will enable them to experience a good quality of life and to be with us for their guidance and their love.

As we grow older we gain a clearer perspective on Life. As a person climbs up a mountain the higher they climb the greater peripheral vision they have of the earth below with all of its beauty. They see details that they could not perceive from a lower altitude. So its is with life and the growth of wisdom that comes with advancing age. You are a valuable person with knowledge and wisdom that you should share with others. Whenever you can do so safely come of the seclusion caused by the pandemic conditions. Turn your thoughts outward and share those treasures of wisdom with all of us instead of looking back at what “could have been”, “should have been” and at things we can longer do with a sense of regret. Approach aging with a sense of humor and an attitude of thankfulness for the good things in our lives and the things we can still do. Look at the value of who you are today!

Someone needs you! Never, never, never give up—you are a precious gem.

SMART PHONES & TABLETS

We have the opportunity to offer a free Tablet or Smart phone to any senior citizen who qualifies to have one but they must be willing to attend instruction on how to use them. Those interested should call to speak to Ron An-druchuk, our Caseworker at 272-8010.

Shadows over Baku is a well written riveting narrative of one family who lived in a multi-cultural city blessed with material reserves which added to a comfortable quality of life for all until manipulation by those who had a polit-ical agenda disrupted the harmonious blending of various ethnic groups. This adventurous true life narrative clearly depicts how seeds of discontent sewn by the governments with self- serving motives can turn even friends and neigh-bors against each other all of whom become innocent victims. The book combines history, political science, social psychology intertwined with lots of philosophy. It is a must read for anyone who likes a thrilling ad-venture but equally for students who should learn from this lest history repeat itself. The adage “forewarned us forearmed”is never so prevalent lest future generations fall victim to those who have a self -serving agenda”. The author Karina Y. Khachatorian is from the North End of Providence and she earned her GED as well as College Credits at the DaVinci Center. She went on to earn a Master Degree. She is now living in California and was re-cently doing Book Signings at Barnes & Noble Bookstores in Los Angeles. Copies of her book are available for purchase at the DaVinci Center.

We are so proud of Karina.

DaVinci Center is looking for a new Bingo machine so that the old one we have had for 30 years can retire! We are seeking an electron-ic machine with scoreboard. A new or slightly used one would be preferred. We are willing to pay a reasonable price. If you have a lead please call John at the Center at 272-7474.

State Primary Election Day Tuesday, September 8

On Tuesday, September 8 from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM the State of Rhode Island will hold its primary for elected officials. A primary is when the political parties determine who will represent their respec-tive party for each office in the General Election in November. When you the voter go to the polls you are asked what party you are affiliat-ed with and you are handed a ballot with the candidates of your party on it for you to select. It is important that you vote to choose the can-didate that you think will help run government best. Remember that you live in a democracy where you can choose who represents you. Exercise your right and privilege to vote, otherwise people who do not have your best interest in mind could get elected. If you are not registered to vote you can still register until August 9 in order to vote in the Primary on September 8.
