NB: No September Edition

Copy deadline for the October issue: Monday, 12th September

I am writing this on a lovely summer’s morning the day following my return from the 14th Dolomites Sky Race. IT SNOWED—so much that the race route had to be altered. I don’t wish to hear any complaints about what a rotten summer East Lancashire has suffered. I travelled out to Italy in my camper. Several other members: Andy Firth, Peter & Jack Dugdale, David Bagot, Ivan Whigham, plus Michael Toman (Rossendale interloper) flew out for a week of fun and frolics. Full report in a later Newsletter. Annual General Meeting Amazingly, it’s that time of year again. The club’s AGM takes place at 8.00pm on Thursday, 25th August at Nelson Cricket Club. The AGM will be preceded by the traditional Club 5K track race at Seedhill, next door to the cricket club. There will be a junior race (distance depends on age) at 6.45pm, before the seniors tackle 12 1/2 laps at 7.00pm. If you are not inclined to run, come to support (or help with the lap counting, which becomes increasingly tricky as runners are lapped). The present holders of the following Committee positions have indicated that they will not be seeking re-election at the Meeting:

• Men’s XC Captain

• Ladies’ Fell Captain. As I pointed out last month, Katy’s decision to stand down from the post of Ladies’ Fell Captain means that we now have NO ladies’ captains. The club really needs 3 female members to volunteer as captains. Please don’t think that the Committee is a ‘closed shop’. All Committee positions are up for election at the AGM. If you would like to stand for any position, especially those mentioned above, please ask another Clayton member to send a nomination to the Secretary prior to the meeting. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor on the evening of the Meeting. In addition to the election of club officials, captains and committee members, the Committee will recommend that we recognise the service of 3 members by electing them to the position of Honorary Member. In relation to this, the Annual General Meeting will be asked to consider amendments to the Club Constitution that clarify Honorary and Life Membership, plus changes that are needed in order to meet the requirements of Her Majesty’s Customs and Revenue with regard to the Club’s application for Community Sports Club status. Please try to attend this important meeting.

Annual Subscriptions Annual subscriptions are due on 1st September each year. With this newsletter, you should receive a Subscription Renewal Reminder. If you set up a Standing Order last year, you need not fill in another, unless you are changing your membership category. However, our Membership Secretary, Mike Eddleston would be grateful if you would check your personal details and amend them, where necessary—especially phone number, mobile number and email address. It’s amazing how often Club officials or captains have difficulties in contacting members by phone, mobile or email, because they have not been informed of changes. 100 Club The 100 Club was established to generate extra income for the Club and has run successfully for many years. As its name implies, the aim is that 100 Club members pledge £1 per month, which enters them into a monthly draw (prize £50; £100 at Christmas). At the time of writing, fewer than 50 members are signed up the 100 Club, meaning that it is no longer covering its outgoings. Unless more members come forward and subscribe very soon, the Committee will have no choice but to wind up the 100 Club. If you would like to subscribe to our 100 Club, please contact Peter Billington (details p14). Club Championship, Fell Runner of the Year and Summer Series

• The Club Championship Road Race (Burnley Boys’ Club 10K) took place on 12th June. CleM provided nearly half the field (41 out of 101 runners). You can work out the 2011 Club Road Champions from the results on p29. The list of Overall Club Champions will be published in the next edition of the Harrier.

• Current standings in the Fell Runner of the Year completion are on p17. I have published the names of members who had completed a minimum of 6 races by 30th June.

• The first of the Summer Series, the Worsthorne Trail Race was held on Tues 28th June. Results on p18.

Please Note: Owing to holidays and my organising the Thieveley Pike Fell Race (details p25), there will be no September edition of the Harrier. See you in October. …...and Finally If you have a schedule for an Bob Graham Round (anti-clockwise) Mike Wallis would like to receive a copy.

Joss Naylor Traverse – May 21st 2011 I’d been planning to do the traverse for the last couple of years, (or was it Monica who’d been planning me to do it?), but Championship racing or injuries got in the way. So 2011 was my opportunity, with the base of good winter training aided by long runs recce’ing and supporting Jean’s BG training. The deterioration in general weather conditions after the glorious clear days of April meant I was never going to get the ideal clear conditions I’d hoped for, but at least it wasn’t going to be too hot! 8.00am found Jack, Steve and me starting on the run from a fine and dry Pooley Bridge. I was glad that the tops to Red Crag were clear but then the cloud came down and was to stay until Steel Fell. Most of the route was head on into a strong wind and there was little shelter behind either Jack or Steve. I’d set an 11hr schedule and we dropped into Kirkstone slightly ahead, with only a minor deviation to find Stony Cove Pike. It was great to be met by Kath and Maureen, Monica, Colin and Eileen. Andy Orr and Simon Thompson were ready for the next section, a climb up Red Screes and the potentially tricky route across to Hart Crag. Andy got it spot on and we arrived at Dunmail 10 minutes up. Kath and Martin were also here to add their support. After writing down the splits at the previous peaks and a short break, I was away and up the short climb of Steel Fell led by Andy Brown and Dave Nuttall, where we were met by Katy. I struggled up to High Raise and from the cairn we could see the dark clouds right down over the fells ahead of us, as the wind began to strengthen. The ridge from Bow Fell to Great End was really windy, and then the rains came in as we descended off to Sty Head, still on schedule time. Here we found Tim Edward who had been sheltering in the mountain rescue box. The rain was by now lashing down; we all put more layers on and headed up the path to Great Gable. I was climbing well and despite the conditions got to the top in 29 minutes. On the way up Dave and Andy stopped to put more gear on. The summit was no place to hang around so Tim and I dropped to Beck Head and found some shelter to wait for them to catch us up, using it as an opportunity to eat more. Again, I climbed Kirk Fell and Pillar well, despite us all being battered by the wind and rain in poor visibility, reaching the top only 4mins down to schedule. Pillar was the crucial point for me and, once over it, I knew I would complete the traverse, the last of the big climbs out of the way. After Steeple; another stop, I was cold and Dave put more clothes onto me. The remaining peaks were topped, albeit rather slowly, Mark guided us off Middle Fell, and after 11hrs 39mins we dropped out of the clouds to Greendale to be met by Kath, Maureen, Jean, Tess, Christopher and Joss. Kath had bought Joss’s book on the journey up and it was great to get him to sign it.

I could not have completed traverse without the support of the road and fell teams, thank you, and thank you gents for the awesome navigation over the last 5 hours in atrocious conditions. The challenge of the Joss Naylor traverse is not just to run the route in 12 hours, but also to raise funds for a charity. I had chosen Cancer Research UK and, although I had been more stressed about seeking sponsorship money than the run, between family, friends, work and Clayton you have raised over £1000…absolutely amazing. Mike

The 2011 Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon – A Personal Recollection

You would be mistaken if you thought that my body had been subject to an immaculate reconstruction and that I had actually competed in the event. The truth is that Vanessa and I had volunteered to help at what was to be our fourth LAMM, and the Thursday afternoon prior to the event weekend found us arriving at what was to be our quarters for the next four days – a bunkhouse at Inverlael about nine miles south of Ullapool in the Northwest Highlands. The event centre was three miles down the road.

Already ensconced in the bunkhouse were the course planners who were busy finalising the routes for the various courses, as well as placing control equipment (orienteering kite plus electronic box) at each of the sixty plus control locations spread across four hundred square kilometres to the east. Former Clayton club member Brian Jackson has special responsibility for the score class course.

Our responsibilities, as in previous years, were registration for Vanessa and car parking for me, with both of us helping to collect in the control equipment after the event. In good weather locating controls is not usually a problem, but in the more traditional Scottish conditions it can be tricky. No one wants to be known as the person who failed to find a control, so the pressure is real.

Friday morning is a bit like the lull before the storm, but there are tasks to do which, for me, included construction of the traditional slit trench toilets. Portaloos are available for the squeamish. My mate Stan (Bradshaw Jnr.) is Chief Car Park Attendant and he gathered his team, just me at that time, others would arrive later. We had a wee senior moment during which we attached the parking signs to the gate into the wrong field, but this was rectified before anyone noticed and we then set about the serious business of deciding how to accommodate up to 400 cars, whilst still allowing access and a start/finish route from the main field to the hills. The knee high thistles did nothing to help.

Things warm up a bit around 3.00 pm when registration opens and competitors start to arrive. It was good to see familiar faces and a small band of Clayton diehards – Mark Nutter, Peter Thompson, Neil Hardiman and Tim Laney. I believe there was a Clayton ladies’ team, but I didn’t see them arrive.

By 7.00 pm we were concerned that relatively few cars had arrived, but then news came through that there had been an accident on the A9 causing long tail-backs. There were lots of horror stories of missed transport links, but most people seemed to be in good spirits. One pair arrived in a taxi from Inverness and handed over £150 to the driver. We decided to call it a day at 12.30 am, but by then we had missed the briefing by organiser and former Clayton club member Martin Stone.

After a short sleep in the bunkhouse we were back on duty at 6.00 am. Vanessa continued with registration until it closed, then moved on to loading competitors onto the buses to take them to their various start locations. Even mountain marathoners behave like sheep at times and this is a potential problem area, but all went smoothly. ‘No one gets past Vanessa’, one of the other marshals commented.

When the last bus had left, peace reigned. Most of the other helpers were going to assist at the overnight camp, a long car drive and a long walk to the east, but we declined, opting instead to collect a couple of controls close to one of the starts and not required after Saturday. So, we spent a sunny Saturday afternoon on a short, but rough walk from Loch Glascarnoch dam. We had the bunkhouse to ourselves on Saturday night and tried to catch up on our sleep and prepare for more control collection the following day.

Sunday’s two controls were quite remote, requiring a two mile drive up an estate road followed by a further two miles by mountain bike before heading into the hills. These controls had been used by the Elite course on Saturday and were not required after that time. We suspected that one would be tricky and it proved to be so, taking twenty minutes of searching before we found it in a peaty groove. Our return route to the bikes conveniently took us over a Corbett, which we added to our tally.

(For those not familiar with Scottish hill bagging lists, Corbetts are hills over 2500 feet high, but below Munro height. As well as Munros and Corbetts there are Grahams, Marilyns and Donalds, and for those people for whom life has lost all meaning there are now ‘Humps’. A Hump is defined as ‘any eminence with a drop of at least 100 feet on all sides’.)

Our diversion over the Corbett meant that we missed the presentation at the event centre, but at least our free pint of An Teallach beer was still available. A lot of competitors had already left, but I managed to track down Neil Hardiman and his partner who looked fresh and very happy with being placed twelfth in the Elite class.

The clearing-up after the event did not take too long: everyone got stuck in and the litter task force returned almost empty handed. Runners were still finishing whilst this was going on, but fortunately there were no emergencies this year and we were soon able to return to the bunkhouse to change into our finery for the celebration dinner in Ullapool. Martin arranges this each year for the planners, helpers etc.

Although the dinner marked the closure of the event, there were still a large number of controls out on the hills and our task was to collect four during Monday. Despite deteriorating weather, a quite hairy river crossing and just one more Corbett we had to include, we found all the controls and returned wet and battered, but well-satisfied with the day.

That evening, we shared accounts of the day’s adventures with the others in the bunkhouse and the river crossings got ever deeper with each beer. All controls had been returned, bar two, and they would, weather permitting, be collected the following day.

Everyone agreed that the event had been a great success, but there is one major issue hanging over it. Most of the people involved are fast approaching senility and some new blood is urgently required. So, if you have some time in early June and fancy some involvement, plus a bit of a challenge, you would be most welcome. The pint of free beer makes it all worthwhile!

• Race organisers reported on the good turn-outs for their races – John Davis (The Whalley Nab) attracted over 100 entrants – more than recorded for several years – it raised nearly £200 for the Chernobyl children. The Walloper Well Wizz attracted 124 runners and Geoff Newsam reported Nick Jones of Pennine knocked two minutes off the record. Paul Healey reported 300 for the Gt. Hameldon senior event and 50 juniors.

• Roger Brewster (as a vet) clocked 31.16 in the Bruges 10K for his part in the victorious English team.

• Mark Brown wrote – “I have today received my official letter of selection to represent Great Britain in the Paralympic Games, Atlanta. It goes without saying that I feel very proud indeed….. Roger Hargreaves once said – have you never considered competing against people with the same disability as yourself? The answer was – I have but I didn’t get a reply when I wrote to the organising body. So with Roger’s words of encouragement I tried again and was successful….. without Denise (Park) I wouldn’t have got this far….I must say a big thanks to my ‘running family’ Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, also to Ossie Olympics which raised £600 and to Walt’s (Wilkinson) white paint.” (The Ossy Moors race to which Mark refers had 28 runners.)

• Dave Scott wrote about the sad loss of Roger Hargreaves on 3rd June at the age of 54. Roger died as a result of a motor bike accident north of Sedbergh. Dave wrote “…. My life, like many others, will be the poorer without his presence. Run like the Wind Roger, run free.” Graham Cunliffe also wrote “I was saddened to hear of the death of a great pal of mine, Roger Hargreaves…..”

• Katy Thompson wrote “Congratulations to Bev McWade and Matt Whitfield on their wedding on 7th July….Mixed news about Foot & Mouth… Tockholes Woods and Darwen Tower are open…”

• Marie Greenwood wrote the Focus on Paul Brannon – “I ran at school but got ‘called to the bar’ for several years. I got back into it after watching the first London Marathon and hearing David Coleman’s emotional commentary. [Did you know?– Tom Targett tells me the idea of the London Marathon was born out of a conversation between George Bell (a member who died a few years ago) and Chris Brasher.] I’ve belonged to Clayton longer than I’ve held any job or been in any organisation. When we are at our best, in relays or en masse in races or social situations, my heart swells with pride. I love the club and get a thrill whenever I see the familiar club sticker in the back of a car window. I saw one in Kent once! Nearly caused a smash on the M25 craning my neck to see who it was.

• Alistair Patten wrote about the forthcoming Ben Nevis race. “….My first race was back in 1959 and in those days it was as much a challenge getting there as it was competing – no motorways and no bridge across Loch Leven. Stan Bradshaw, the elder, organised a team consisting of the Heaton brothers, Ken and Alan, George Brass, Stan and myself….we caught an overnight train…. Thumbed a lift from Crianlarich to Fort William….My (race) time was 2.05.33 on a very hot day…..we got a lift to Glasgow with the Police Pipe Band, setting off at 1am with the drunken Pipers playing all the way to Glasgow – plying with whisky throughout the nightmare journey arriving at Glasgow at 4am…. In the 1963 race I had my best run, finishing 9th in 1.54.12 over the old longer course…”

• Richard Bellaries wrote about his successful Bob Graham Round on 24th/25th June. “After several years in mothballs, the Clayton Harriers Bob Graham Machine was back in action….today the temperature was perfect for running….On the climb towards Robinson we encountered clag which was to be my companion for most of the Round….With the eminent Wendy Dodds and the mighty Martin Brady on board to lead me home, I was feeling confident….With one mountain to go, I completely ran out of steam and ground to a halt. My own fault – I didn’t have a great deal to eat at the last road stop and had been refusing the offers of food since then. A gel pack and a short rest saw us getting going again and in no time at all we were clattering off Skiddaw….up to the Moot Hall to an almighty cheer from all the supporters. The time was 07.36. The Clayton Bob Graham Machine had performed admirably and my heartfelt thanks go out to all for helping me achieve this fell runner’s dream. 22.36.

NORTH COL- EVEREST 7060M / 23,162FT A day on the hill.

Over the evening meal in the mess tent, the 8 man North Col Team had

decided not to join the all-out assault on the North Col by the’ Everest Summit’ Team

of 13 and 9 sherpas. I wasn’t happy with the decision. We were to go the day after

with two Sherpas, but the emphasis would be lost. I had trained for 2 weeks with all

the summit team and I didn’t want to lose the moment. That night I packed my

rucksack.

At 5.30 am the following morning the weather was clear, no snow had fallen

and Everest was beckoning.

I went round my ‘team mates’ tents and let them know I had reversed my

decision. It was up to them whether they joined me. I had done my part in helping

others it was now every man for himself! I dressed for the hill.

We were already at ABC (advanced base camp) at 6400m/21,000ft and had a

climb of 660m in front of us.

I sat in the ’North Col’ team mess tent alone waiting for breakfast. At 7am,

Ross, another team mate walked in, huffing and puffing about me changing my mind,

but I knew he daren’t miss the opportunity.

We set out together at 8am to ‘Crampon Point’, a majestic point where you

geared up for ‘the wall of ice’. Most of the ‘summit team’ had left earlier to get a good

start. Crampon Point was reached at 10am.The wind was already stirring and it was

extremely cold: - 25C. Crampons fitted to the already donned heavy-duty plastic

boots, climbing harness on with jumar ascender, cow’s tail and screwgates, fig of 8

descender, snow goggles, ice axe and, lastly, my warm down jacket and huge mitten

gloves. My God, I wasn’t a fell runner anymore, I was about to put all the skills I had

learnt over the last 3 weeks with the ‘summit team’ into practice and become a

‘Mountaineer’, following in the footsteps of Mallory and Irvine.

Across the glacier I followed a 61 year old who had climbed Everest from the

south side the previous year and was trying to break the world record for the oldest

man to summit from both sides. I only knew him as Simon, as I had lent him a

walking pole - he had broken one of his.

Out of the mist the bottom of the fixed ropes appeared. They led up the ‘wall of

ice’ a 600m climb to the North Col. The Tibetan rope fixers had only put them in two

days previously. The route had been slightly changed after a Cerac collapsed and

wiped out a Hungarian climber at the end of last season.

The next four hours were to prove the hardest and most physically demanding

feat I have ever undertaken. The 60 degree slope with the crux at 80 never seemed

to end. Digging in steps and pointing in with the crampons while heaving yourself up

the fixed rope with a jumar ascender in one hand and an ice axe in the other.

Clipping your protection in and out of every new rope and, to make things worse,

passing other climbers and sherpas hurtling towards you coming down the mountain.

A 50 metre traverse at about two thirds way was the only respite in the never-ending

wall of rope. Simon had one of the radios with him. A call from the Col told us we had

a 3pm turn-round deadline.

I moved around him and pushed on, calves burning, oxygen level is only 33%

that of sea level.

I had reached the crux: an 80 degree incline, turning right. I had caught a

group of four of the ‘summit team’. There was a queue. It was cold and visibility down

to a few metres. I recognised Jason; he was ex-army and had already summited

Everest four years earlier in a military team. He wanted to do it again as a civilian and

enjoy it!! He dropped his ice axe and couldn’t reach it. I pulled in some slack rope

from below and swung out for it, grasping it with my left hand. When I tapped him on

the shoulder and handed him back, he thanked me gratefully.

I topped out onto the ridge and as I joined the four in front of me the leader,

Zac, pointed upwards to a ladder precariously perched at a 45 degree angle. It

spanned a six foot gaping crevasse that disappeared into the abyss.” You need to

climb that to go over 7000 metres and onto the Col” he calmly said. I clipped into the

rope either side of the ladder frame.” Don’t look down” he said. It was too late.

When you’re looking at your feet in huge boots with crampons on and you’re trying to

fit the rungs on what looked like a B&Q ladder between the spiked crampons, it’s

easier said than done.

Up I went and out onto the Col. There were about six tents, three-quarters

covered in snow. In a week’s time the summit team would return here and sleep the

night. They preferred not to come up and see it. Obligatory photographs taken, I

returned via the ladder.

The team who had delighted in watching me brave the ladder had gone, they

were already descending. We were now short of time. ”It will take us two hours to get

down and we are running out of light” said Zac. “No time for using the fig of 8

descender. We will have to Angel Wing-it.” This is a climbing term. Arms out, you

wrap the rope around the arms to create balance and friction. I spent the next two

hours hanging on for grim death. Now, all my fell running descending came to

fruition. With my heart literally in my mouth I descended 1800ft off the world’s highest

mountain. At times I was on my own in an extreme wilderness. I’m not sure whether I

will experience that again. A sense of exhilaration and fear all rolled into one.

I had caught a couple of summit team guys on the way down. I was exhausted

and spitting blood as I staggered into camp, some nine and a half hours after leaving.

My North Col team mates were relieved to see me and, although none of them

made it, I think they were genuinely happy that at least one of us had.

Ladies’ Fell News Loughrigg & Silver Howe 26th June The day started very misty but gradually cleared. However, it remained very muggy. With an out-and-back course and the men starting half an hour behind the ladies there was a lot of meeting runners going the other way, and being overtaken by faster runners on the way back. Not ideal, but interesting. Anna, Wendy, Jean, Alison Dugdale, Linda Bostock and I ran for the ladies. Anna was 5th V45/9th V40 - no mean feat these days - and Wendy was 1st V60/2nd V55. Anna, Wendy and Jean were 1st Vets team. With 2 firsts and 2 seconds this puts us back in gold medal position; but we're not safe yet and it would be good to improve our points in the final two races. Whittle Pike Fell Race 30th July Whittle Pike is the only English championship race this year which is not pre-entry. A short, local race (Cowpe Village) so hopefully we have had a good turnout of Clayton ladies and consolidate our position. See the website for how we got on. Sedbergh Hill Race 21st August The final English championship race is pre-entry this year. Entry on official form available from www.peteblandsports.co.uk from 1st July. There is a limit of 400 so I hope you have got your entry in.

Tuesday Summer Training Venues 2011

Summer training will follow the usual format of group runs from the following venues, at the time stated:

The venues are chosen so that members can train off or on the road, according to their preference.

Tuesday Fell Training

All members are welcome to take part in the Tuesday Fell Runs, The usual arrangement is for three groups to run from each venue for between one and two hours, although this can vary according to numbers, weather and what members have done at the weekend. If you are new to the Club/summer training runs/fell running, please make yourself known to a Committee member or group leader before the run and we will attempt to place you in the most appropriate group. All members should ensure that they carry some emergency/extra clothing with them on the run: wind (water)-proof top, over trousers, hat and gloves. The weather can change very quickly on the fells. If you, or someone else in the group has an accident, you can very quickly become cold or hypothermic, even on the most pleasant of evenings. It’s also a good idea to carry a drink and some emergency food (sweets, chocolate bar), in case you are out longer than you expect—it has been known for a group leader to get carried away occasionally.
