While most GPSM students took a step away

from the books during their summer vacation, a

group of ten students spent their summer

vacation on a two-week study abroad program to

Japan! The group spent twelve days in Sendai,

located in the northern region of Japan and

studied Japanese sport and culture at Sendai

University. This is the second group of GPSM

students to participate in the educational

exchange with Sendai University, and the visit

was another huge success! Led by the first

foreign General Manager of any Japanese baseball team and Vice President of Sendai University,

Marty Kuehnert, the group received the red carpet treatment as they were given stadium tours of

both the professional soccer and baseball stadiums

in Sendai (see photos), met with their front office

executives, followed by tickets to both games.

Students saw firsthand the similarities and

differences in how sport as a business is managed

in Japan. They also attended special classes

focused on collegiate sports, athletic training,

kendo, and sumo wrestling in Japan and even had

a traditional “chankonabe” dinner with retired su-

mo wrestler, Henry “Sentoryu” Miller. The students spent their final

weekend sightseeing in Tokyo. The trip was a once-in-a-lifetime

experience for the entire group, one that they’ll never forget. Domo

On Saturday, July 12th, Learning Team 25 visited RMD Group, based here in Long Beach, to learn more about experiential marketing. RMD Group one of the top 100 experiential marketing agen-cies in the U.S. with clients such as Ford, Red Bull, Degree and Toyo Tires. CEO and President Ralph Holguin shared his moving story from detailing cars to becoming a marketing expert and how hard work can carry you to your professional aspirations. For more infor-mation on RMD Group, please visit http://rmdgroupinc.com/

One of the first exciting events that newly admitted students into the program attend is the Internship Roundtable. The roundtable offers the incoming learning team the opportunity to sit down with local companies in the sports industry and participate in a “speed-interview” session.

Here, students can network and leave an impression with company representatives in order to obtain an internship. Every student in the program is required to complete three internship courses one each semester in the program.

Many students in the program have witnessed first-hand how internships lead to full-time positions. The Fall 2014 Internship Roundtable was held on August 14th at the Chartroom on campus. Of the 22 company representatives present at the Fall 2014 Internship roundtable, a total of 10 were alumni of the program.

Companies that attended the roundtable included: Long Beach State Athletics, Special Olympics World Games, Special Olympics Southern California, Big West Conference, Roy Englebrecht Promotions and Fight Club OC, LA Marathon, Ontario Fury Foundation, LA Galaxy, Honda Center, Kinane Events, Rose Bowl Stadium, UCLA Athletics, Orange County Youth Sports Foundation, Ontario Reign and Cartan Global. Thanks to our internship partners for another successful Internship Roundtable!

GPSM Alum Making Moves!

On August 23rd, 2014, Long Beach State’s Graduate Program in Sports Management participated in the 9th Annual Special Olympics Southern California Plane Pull. The Plane Pull is a fun team competition that requires teams to pull a 164,000 pound FedEx Airbus 310. All proceeds will support more than 15,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities who train and compete in life-changing sports programs. This year, Special Olympics Southern California fundraised $118,000; making it the largest fundraising amount in SOSC’s Plane Pull history.
