TherecipientoftheVilisAnsonsMemorialTrophyfor2014is Boris Bachynski.

In order to truly understand and appreciate Boris, we need to start at the beginning. You might wonder how Boris became tennis convenor in

2003?In2002,ourVictoriaBeachtenniscommitteeconsistingof

George Gilmour, Doug Hancock and myself needed to find a new tennis convenor as my 3-year term as convenor was ending.George and Doug were previous Victoria Beach tennis

convenors, highly respected leaders in our tennis community andpreviouswinnersoftheVilisAnsonsMemorialtrophy. Our committee met and established criteria that the

successful candidate for tennis convenor must meet. Someof the qualifications included experience, communication, motivation and the love of tennis. Our search ended in theconsensus that Boris Bachynski was at the top of our list. Thankfully, Boris accepted the position of Victoria Beach

tennis convenor. Overhisthree-yearterm,Borishadmanyaccomplishments.

HisfortewashavingavisionoftransformingourVictoriaBeachtennis courts into a beautiful, well maintained and professional looking tennis club. Boris called this “beautification”.Youonlyhavetolookaroundtoseethemanyimprovements

that Boris made – the water fountain, freshly painted seating areas with roofs, plant barrels with beautiful flowers in bloom, the new tennis signage, and the major resurfacing of courts 3, 4 &5in2005.Borisalsoensuredthatallofthetennisequipment(nets,rollers,brushes)wereintopcondition.Borisdesignedand built the hanging, locking boards that cover the draw sheet boards that we use for all of our tennis tournaments.

When Boris had a goal; neither hell nor high water was going to stop him. He worked tirelessly to achieve his goals. He also led by example – how many times did we see Boris with a paint can and brush painting the bleachers or with a hammer and nails replacing rotten floor boards, shingling the roof over our bleachers, planting flowers, or cutting down a tree adjacent to our tennis courts that was going to fall, damaging our fence. These were just some of the examples of the ongoing work that Boris took on.I was honoured to present Boris with the Vilis Ansons

Memorial Trophy.

Congratulations Boris!KenCapelle

Where did it go? It is hard to believe that six weeks of tennis programmingatVBisalmostoverforanotheryear. For all the tennisplayersout therewhohavebeenbit by the

tennisbug,eithernewornotsonew,thisarticleisforyou.Youknowwhoyouare.Youaretheoneswhowouldratherbeplayingtennisthanalmostanythingelseintheworld.Youaretheoneswhose lifehasbeentrulyalteredbythegame.Foryou, theVBtennis courts are a huge reason you are here. This article is a slightly updated reprint from last year. Although our tennis time atVBiscomingtoanend, it isourhopethatthismayhelptokeep the spark alive until our next season together.

It has been a great tennis season with all those screaming forehand winners, those crisp unreturnable volleys, and service aces that made your chest and head swell. Those are the shots that keep us coming back for more, that one in a hundred shots, that exquisite point where the ball and racquet collide at the perfect spot in space, where they make perfect contact and the ball flies effortlessly to where it is intended. All you need to hit is one and you are hooked for life. All you need to do is hit one and you desperately want to hit another. It is that perfect effortless hit that makes us run around the court like crazy people trying to kill that yellow ball.

However, for every one of those perfect shots, there are hundreds of shots that are not even close. There are hundreds of shots that frustrate us, depress us, make us feel inadequate, cause some to swear, stamp their feet, and even break racquets.

The solution… get better. To get better we take lessons, practice, and play as much as we can. But now there is one more resource that we can access, the internet. Tennis sites on the internet are plentiful. These sites are usually built by entrepreneurial tennis coaches who are trying to expand their audience. Instead of giving a tennis lesson to a small group, they give a tennis lesson to the World Wide Web. These sites are very sophisticated with complete courses offered on anything you can think of related

to tennis, strokes, strategies, exercises, footwork etc. All have extensive video libraries of the top pros performing in super slow motion, usually with commentary. These sites are trying to convince you to buy their courses or video collections to improve your game. A forehand course will take students through the stroke, step by step, with practice drills. Some even offer freevideo analysis if you send in video of yourself. Youdon’t have to buy the courses to benefit from these sites

as most have free resources that demonstrate the basic tennis strokes. To access these free resources or video libraries you are asked to subscribe by giving your email address. Once asubscriber, you then have access to their free material, which in some instances can be huge. They will also send free tips, lessons, videos and snippets of their programs to entice you to purchase their latest courses. Some of themore popular tennis sites are FuzzyYellowBalls.

com, founded by Will Hamilton. By subscribing to this site you get access to an extensive free basic strokes collection. Hamilton has studied all the top players and has assembled the common elements of each player’s strokes. By copying these elements you canhaveaperfect stroke,be ita forehand, backhandetc.Nowin themiddleofawinternightyoucanseeFederer’s forehandin slow motion and practice it yourself in the privacy of your own basement. I have broken many a light bulb and lamp mimickingthatexactforehand.OfallthesitesIamfamiliarwith,fuzzyyellowballs.com has the best basic strokes collection and the best thing is … it’s free.TennisOne(tennisone.com)isaverylargeandpopulartennis

site.HostedbyJimMcLennan,DougKing,andothers,thissitehasfreeresources,butitishardtonavigate.Introducedin1996,it isshowingitsage.DougKing’sapproachtotennisisunique, almost Zen-like, but worth a look.Onlinetennisinstruction.com is an up and coming tennis

site.HostedbyFlorianMeier, ahigh rankingGermanandUScoach, this site has some free resources, but the main benefit of subscribing is the free tips sent to your inbox. Florian’s videosare well orchestrated with side by side examples of proper and improper stroke technique.

These are but a few of the many tennis sites out there. Google or YouTubetheareayouareinterestedinandyouwillhaveplentyof options to choose from. I think seeing the stroke performed properly and then broken down to manageable pieces is an aid to any struggling tennis player with the desire to improve. So in themiddle ofwinter, when the tennis courts are but a

distant memory, log onto one of these sites, practice your perfect swing and put a few dents in the ceiling. Imagine that perfect contact, and be excited about tennis all over again.

By the way, if you enter a site that has a lot of pictures of Anna Kornikovainskimpytennisoutfits, youareonthewrongsite.Seeyouatthecourts!BryanandLisa

The 8 at the Gate riding group celebrated its tenth year of riding andfifthyearof theGranFondo–GranColazioneonSundayAug. 3. We completed the usual 45 km group ride to LesterBeach, winding up back at Marshall’s for pancakes, mimosas and fellowship. Thirty-four riders turned out with at least half a dozen of our “regular” riders missing for various reasons. A scorching pace was set by Daniel Russell*, Gord and Tom Mahwinney and Scott Stephanson, along with some imports from GrandBeach for the “l’Echappée” group. “le Péléton” maintained afast pace aswell (30 to 35 km/h), and “leGruppetto” enjoyedthe conversation and scenery that the other groups could not, due to lack of oxygen, sweat in eyes or HR monitor issues.
