A letter from the Pastor

Our Mission:Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

Dear Friends,I announced a month ago that we offered the position of Faith Formation and Education to Mr. David Bissone. He readily accepted and was going to be starting here on September 1. He informed me last week that he decided to take another job!We contacted another candidate that we had interviewed in late May whom we were very impressed with. I called Michael Bannon; had him in for another interview with Sister Diane Marie and me. After checking his references I decided to offer him the position. He readily accepted! He has been working in Faith Formation and Education for about five years. He brings deep faith, an inviting personality and youth to the position. Next week I have asked him to write an article for the bulletin introducing himself. One of my concerns with the person in this position was that they will coordinate the Religious Education program. Since we are already in August I asked Michael if he could begin ASAP. After talking to his present Pastor they agreed that Michael could end his time at St. Elizabeth Seton this past Friday and he will begin his ministry here tomorrow, August 5. It’s continually amazing how God provides!!I want to give you an update about the position of Music and Liturgy Director. Almost the same thing happened as with the other position. We offered the position to a very qualified person. He was enthusiastic about it and asked for a week to pray and think about it. After a week he decided to stay in his present position. The search continues with a few more interviews with candidates this week. I ask your patience with this process. I’ll continue to keep you up to date.Last Sunday I mentioned that our prayers were answered that our new air conditioning would be working. It has been delayed again awaiting permit approvals. Let’s continue to pray that it will be working by September!!The readings for this Sunday focus on greed and what is most important. The first line of the Gospel reads “teacher tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” I have heard many stories about families that are torn apart because of inheritances. It can get out of proportion and some families don’t even talk to each other as a result. This should make us reflect upon our accumulations of money and other things. How much do we really need. Are we hoarding? Do our goods keep us from those that we love? Where is our relationship with Jesus prioritized?Eat, drink and be merry – maybe occasionally but it is certainly a shallow way to live. Let’s get rid of things instead of holding on to the things that don’t really matter.

In His Spirit, Fr. Patrick M. Marshall

A letter from the Pastor

Estimados Amigos,

School NewsSaint John Berchmans Eagles Soar High!!

Sending your child to a Catholic school is an investment, a sacrifice and an act of love. We can show you the return is GREAT!! The archdiocese shared some very impressive numbers. On standardized tests, St. John Berchmans students scored 30% or more HIGHER than any other school in Logan Square. We are very proud of our hard working students. We are also proud of our dedicated, innovative teachers who teach the common core and more. Our teachers have the freedom to get creative and challenge our students in new and exciting ways like winning an Engineering and Design contest at the Chicago History Museum, Kindergarten STEM partnership with University of Illinois, and a continued educational grant partnership with the Museum of Science and Industry.

Some people may say tests scores or curriculum aren’t important when choosing an elementary school. However, we know that test scores are one extremely important way to measure a school’s success. High Schools and colleges very much rely on test scores and grades for admissions. That’s why St. John Berchmans graduates are accepted at competitive, elite schools all over the Chicagoland area like St. Ignatius, DePaul College Prep, Trinity, St. Patrick, Holy Trinity, Lane Tech and Jones College Prep.

We are also so grateful to our parents, staff, parish, Fr. Marshall and Fr. Paul who support this school, these teachers and our children. This community is what makes SJB stand out among all other schools in Logan Square.

Here are a few testimonials from St John Berchmans parents:

“It was important to me to find a Catholic school that fostered tolerance and inclusion, in addition to solid academics and supporting the development of well-rounded, respectful, responsible people. SJB so far has delivered on these fronts -- even exceeded my expectations.”

“SJB is the best decision I have made for my child thus far. It’s a safe, friendly, caring community that provides a wonderful environment for my son to grow and learn. It’s nice having a child who wants to go to school everyday.”

“The administration and board of directors work very hard to implement new technology as well as putting a focus on faith, academics, sports and the arts. My child will continue here through 8th grade.”

Our PreSchool program is at capacity, but we still have spots for transfer students in our upper grades. Applications for SY2020-2021 open December 1, 2019. Come find out what everyone in Logan Square is talking about: St. John Berchmans School! Contact the school office for more information. https://stjohnberchmans.org/
