The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Holy Day of Obligation

Vigil Masses Wednesday, August 14 4:00 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.

Holy Day Masses Thursday, August 15

8:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 4:00 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.

The parish office will be closed for the Holy Day on Thursday, August 15.

In addition, Campus Ministry at Monmouth Universi-ty has made arrangements for Mass to be celebrated on this Holy Day of Obligation on-campus at 8:00 a.m. in the Withey Chapel in Wilson Hall.

Annual Summer Missionary Appeal

Please join us in welcoming Fr. Ronald Sibugan, a missionary priest who will be visiting our parish during the weekend of August 10-11 to present a mission appeal.

Father Ron is a member of a worldwide congrega-tion called Augustinians of the Assumption or the As-sumptionists. They were founded by Fr. Emmanuel d'Alzon in France in 1845. Their charism is education in all its forms including working in school settings, parishes, pilgrimages, publications, and many more. They are rendering their services in 32 coun-tries. Father Ron is originally from the Philippines. He has been part of the congregation for more than 14 years now. He did his for-mation studies at St. John’s Seminary in Boston and was ordained as a priest in 2014 (happy Fifth Anniversary, Father!). He is currently working as Campus Minister at Assumption College in Worcester, MA.

The proceeds of the August 10-11 Mission Appeal here at St. Michael’s will be applied to the Assumption-ists’ work in Mexico, East Africa, and the Philippines.

FEAST OF ST. CHRISTOPHER PATRON SAINT OF CAR SAFETY AND TRAVELERS

On Sunday, August 11 immediately after the 12:00 Noon Mass, the parish priests and Fr. Sibugan will be available in the North Parking Lot for all those who wish to have their cars blessed. Please park in the area near the garage and between the statues of St. Anthony and St. Michael and the priests will be there right after Mass for this blessing and a brief prayer.

St. Christopher Prayer: "The Motorist's Prayer"

Grant me O Lord a steady hand and watchful eye.

That no one shall be hurt as I pass by. Thou gavest life, I pray no act of mine

May take away or mar that gift of Thine. Shelter those, dear Lord, who bear me company,

From the evils of fire and all calamity. Teach me to use my car for others need; Nor miss through love of undue speed

The beauty of the world; that thus I may With joy and courtesy go on my way.

St. Christopher, holy patron of travelers, Protect me and lead me safely to my destiny.

Amen.

As part of the ongoing implementation of the Faith In Our Future (FIOF) efforts in our Diocese and in our Cohort 17, the parishes of Cohort 17 (St. Michael’s, Our Lady of Hope (the merged parishes of St. Jerome’s and St. Mary’s), Christ the King, Precious Blood, and St. Dorothea’s) have been celebrating a “Cohort Quarterly Mass” roughly every three months on a rotating basis at one of the churches within our Cohort. The next of these Quarterly Cohort Masses will be on the Solemnity of the Assumption (Thursday, August 15, a holy day of obligation) at 5:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Deal. All are invited and welcome. Fr. Butler and Fr. Nillo will be concelebrating this Mass at St. Mary’s with other pastors and paro- chial vicars of Cohort 17. Immediate-ly following this Mass, all are invited to participate in St. Mary’s procession to the beach for the Annual Blessing of the Sea. Following the procession, all are also invited to return to the St. Mary’s Parish Hall for refreshments and fellowship and to socialize with our Cohort 17 neighbors.

The monthly Youth and Young Adults Mass will be suspended during the summer months of July and Au-gust and will resume in September. This Mass is ordi-narily celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 6:00 p.m. Please follow the bulletin for further infor-mation about this Mass.

The Baptism preparation classes for parents are con-ducted every third Thursday of the month. There will be no class on Thursday, August 15 (because of that day’s Holy Day of Obligation-The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary). The next class is September 19. Classes begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Lower Church. Please call the Parish Office to register in advance.

*This $114,276 figure is approximately 104% of our parish goal. It was received during the first twenty four weekends of the campaign (tallied as of July 30) from 308 pledg-ers or check-writing con-tributors (and many uni-dentified, unquantified cash contributors) all of whom comprise approxi-mately 11.1% of the 2,798 registered households of the parish. Thank you! The Diocese sent a Dioce-san-wide “second mailing” during the week of May 20 to registered parishioners other than the 11.1% not-ed above asking for prayerful consideration of a pledge/contribution to the Annual Catholic Ap-peal. Please help to the extent that you can.

Each of us has a vital part in all we do in Christ’s name, and each of us can share in all we do with a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our single Act of Faith propels the works of love that build up our Church. You make that happen with a generous gift to the ACA. Your contribution does make a difference! Please help. Please contribute. Please make a pledge.

The two “thermometers” above compare our parish’s 2018 vs. 2019 results-to-date in the Annual Catholic Appeal. The thermometers indicate very good news. Collection basket donations the past two weekends and a sub-stantial recent anonymous pledge have put the parish over our goal. Thank you and congrat-ulations! Since there is historically a 5% non-redemption rate with pledges to the ACA, we’ll continue our campaign efforts for a few more weeks to build a cushion and a prudent margin and to ensure that actual collections exceed the goal. Again, thanks and congratulations!

Pastor’s Note: The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican in Rome has brought together in one document several of the Church’s teachings with respect to the cremation of Christian bodies for burial or entombment. The document was promulgated in August 2016. Published below is an excerpt (roughly half) as issued by Cardinal Gerhard Muller on behalf of the Congregation. It states the principles that apply and govern when we Catholics are considering, and making plans for, certain end-of-life matters especially when cremation is one of the considerations. Cardinal Muller’s letter is published here for the purpose of providing accurate, de-finitive, and reliable information on the Church’s teaching to enable our knowledge to be well informed and our consciences to be well formed. The second half of Cardinal Muller’s letter will be published in next week’s parish bulletin. If there are questions, please feel free to contact the parish priests for further guidance. 1. To rise with Christ, we must die with Christ: we must “be away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Cor 5:8). With the Instruction Piam et Constantem of 5 July 1963, the then Holy Office established that “all necessary measures must be taken to pre-serve the practice of reverently burying the faithful departed”, adding however that cremation is not “opposed per se to the Christian religion” and that no longer should the sacraments and funeral rites be denied to those who have asked that they be cremated, under the condition that this choice has not been made through “a denial of Christian dogmas, the animosity of a secret society, or hatred of the Catholic religion and the Church”. Later this change in ecclesiastical discipline was incorporated into the Code of Canon Law (1983) and the Code of Canons of

Oriental Churches (1990) ... the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has deemed opportune the publica-tion of a new Instruction, with the intention of underlin-ing the doctrinal and pastoral reasons for the preference of the burial of the remains of the faithful and to set out norms pertaining to the conservation of ashes in the case of cremation. 2. Following the most ancient Christian tradition, the Church insistently rec-ommends that the bodies of the deceased be buried in cemeteries or other sa-cred places. In memory of the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord, the mystery that illumines the Christian meaning of death, burial is above all the most fitting way to express faith and hope in the resurrection of the body. The Church who, as Mother, has accompanied the Christian during his earthly pil-grimage, offers to the Father, in Christ, the child of her grace, and she com-mits to the earth, in hope, the seed of the body that will rise in glory... burial in a cemetery or another sacred place adequately corresponds to the piety and respect owed to the bodies of the faithful departed who through Baptism have become temples of the Holy Spirit and in which “as instruments and vessels the Spirit has carried out so many good works”.... the burial of the faithful de-

parted in cemeteries or other sacred places encourages family members and the whole Christian commu-nity to pray for and remember the dead, while at the same time fostering the veneration of martyrs and saints. 3. In circumstances when cremation is chosen because of sanitary, economic or social considerations, this choice must never violate the explicitly stated or the reasonably inferable wishes of the deceased faithful. The Church raises no doctrinal objections to this practice, since cremation of the deceased’s body does not affect his or her soul, nor does it prevent God, in his omnipotence, from raising up the deceased body to new life. Thus cremation, in and of itself, objectively negates neither the Christian doctrine of the soul’s immortality nor that of the resurrection of the body.

In next week’s bulletin we will continue with the publication of the second half of Car-dinal Muller’s document that explains more about the correct and Catholic way to deal with the cremated remains.

Communion Visits

Please keep in mind that the parish priests and our lay Ex-traordinary Ministers of the Eu-charist are available and eager to bring Communion to parish-ioners who are in the hospital (nursing homes, assisted living

facilities, rehab centers, and hospices, too) and to parish-ioners who are at home but unable to get to church. Please contact Mary Valan at the parish office or Dotty O'Hara at (908)310-6497 to make arrange-ments. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities generally do not notify the parish office regarding their Catholic patients who desire to receive Communion. And so it falls to the patient herself/himself or to a family member or friend to contact the parish office to make the re-quest. The parish priests will also very gladly make a hospital visit or home visit to hear a Confession and/or administer the Sacrament of the Sick in addition to bring-ing Holy Communion. Please remember to contact the parish office or Dotty to make these arrangements. Thank you.

God has a plan for you - and it might be as a CCD teach-er, teacher’s aide, or volunteer. Please contact Kevin Connelly (Director of Religious Ed) at 732-483-0360 ext. 3 to join our teams on Sunday mornings or Tuesday afternoons. God may be calling YOU.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

Would you like to become a Catholic? Or perhaps you have been baptized yet never received First Holy Com-munion or made your Confirmation? The Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) classes begin in the fall. If you are interested in attending these classes to complete your Sacraments, please contact Kevin Connelly (our Director of Religious Education) at 732-483-0360 ext. 3 or Mary Valan at the parish office.

Natural Family Planning (NFP) answers to the need for the protection and preservation of the human person as the image and likeness of God and of the human body as the Temple of the Holy Spirit. NFP promises to integrate heaven and earth, the soul and the body. NFP respects and protects the nature of the person. In a phrase, Natural Family Planning is loving, naturally. For more infor-mation, please speak to the parish priests and visit the Diocese website at dioceseoftrenton.org/natural-family-planning.

Monday - Thursday: 8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.(closed 12:00 Noon - 1:00 p.m. for lunch)

Friday: 8:30 a.m.-12:00 Noon

Not all storms come to disrupt your life. Some come to clear your path…

Knowing when to say “yes” or “no” are lessons we all can use. Both allow us to take ownership of our lives, our beliefs and desires. It is ok to say “Yes”.

“We can learn to say yes to things that feel good, to what we want - for others and ourselves.

We can learn to say yes to fun. Yes to meetings, to call-ing a friend, asking for help.

We can learn to say yes to healthy relationships, to people and activities that are good for us.

We can learn to say yes to ourselves, what we want and need, our instincts, and the leading of our Higher Power. We can learn to say yes when it feels right to help some-

one. We can learn to say yes to our feelings. We can learn to identify when we need to take a walk, take a nap, have our back rubbed, or buy ourselves flowers.” Unknown

The PATHWAY TO HEAL is for those that need sup-port with life's new paths and journeys.

We are a ministry for separated, divorced and widowed persons.

If you need a place to come and feel safe please plan on attending our group.

Our next meeting is on Thursday, August 22nd at 7:00PM

St. Michael's Living Room 6 West End Court, Long Branch, NJ

Please Join Us. All Are Welcomed.

Thank You and May God Bless You

During the month of August we will be saying “farewell for now, thank you, and God bless” to our San Alfonso friends Rev. Jim Wallace, Rev. Bill Gaffney, and Br. Bernie Colleran. Each will be moving to a new assignment or residence within the Redemptorist religious community in the coming weeks. We are extremely grateful for the kindnesses, prayers, friendship, and hospitality that Fr. Jim. Fr. Bill, and Br. Bernie have ex-tended over the years to St. Michael’s and our parishioners and priests; and especially for the numerous Masses celebrated and Confessions heard

by Fr. Jim and Fr. Bill for our people. Please keep Fr. Jim, Fr. Bill, Br. Bernie, and all the Redemptorists in your pray-ers and please pray for vocations, vocations, vocations.
