Gloria
Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King,
O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,

Gospel Reading Matthew 16:21-27
Homily
Profession of Faith
I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD,
THE FATHER ALMIGHTY,
MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH,
OF ALL THINGS VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE.
I BELIEVE IN ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST,
THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD,
BORN OF THE FATHER BEFORE ALL AGES.
GOD FROM GOD, LIGHT FROM LIGHT,
TRUE GOD FROM TRUE GOD,
BEGOTTEN, NOT MADE,
CONSUBSTANTIAL WITH THE FATHER;
THROUGH HIM ALL THINGS WERE MADE.
FOR US MEN AND FOR OUR SALVATION
HE CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN,
AT THE WORDS THAT FOLLOW, UP TO AND INCLUDING AND BE
CAME MAN, ALL BOW.
AND BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, WAS INCARNATE OF THE
VIRGIN MARY, AND BECAME MAN.
FOR OUR SAKE HE WAS CRUCIFIED UNDER PONTIUS
PILATE, HE SUFFERED DEATH AND WAS BURIED,
AND ROSE AGAIN ON THE THIRD DAY
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SCRIPTURES.
HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN
AND IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER.
HE WILL COME AGAIN IN GLORY
TO JUDGE THE LIVING AND THE DEAD
AND HIS KINGDOM WILL HAVE NO END.
I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE LORD, THE GIVER
OF LIFE,
WHO PROCEEDS FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON,
WHO WITH THE FATHER AND THE SON IS ADORED
AND GLORIFIED,
WHO HAS SPOKEN THROUGH THE PROPHETS.
I BELIEVE IN ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC, AND APOSTOLIC
CHURCH.
I CONFESS ONE BAPTISM FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF
SINS
AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THE RESURRECTION OF
THE DEAD
AND THE LIFE OF THE WORLD TO COME. AMEN.

Salt for the Week
Are you ever finding it hard to think these days?
There is an overwhelming amount of information and opinions swirling around us about schools, viruses, politics and
political candidates, moral issues, and the economy— not to mention the chaos of our own derecho here in Iowa. Like Jeremiah in the first reading, we may be feeling duped.
Our scripture lessons for this weekend provide a much needed still point to center and focus our weary hearts and minds.
Saint Paul says: “Do not conform yourself to this age
but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God,
what is good and pleasing and perfect.” Rom 12: 2
And Jesus’ words in Matthew’s gospel: “You are thinking not as God does,
but as human beings do.”
What we need these days is not more shouting or division, negative talk and/or slander. What we need these days—what I need these days is simple—more prayer. Let’s all commit to at least equal time between our conversations and concerns and the time we spend outside of weekend worship, in prayer, and in silence. Christ will transform our hearts and renew our minds if we only listen.

Stewardship—In today’s second reading, St. Paul exhorts the Romans to total stewardship. Brothers and sisters, he urges, “…offer your bodies as living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.”
Prayer Before Mass Receive, O Holy Trinity, this Holy Sacrifice of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which we, your unworthy servants, desire now to offer to You by the hands of Your minister, with all the sacrifices which have ever been or will be offered to You, in union with that Holy Sacrifice offered by Jesus Christ our Lord at the Last Supper, and on the Altar of the Cross.
We offer it to You with the utmost affection and devotion, out of pure love for Your infinite goodness, and according to the most holy intention of the same Christ our Lord, and of our Holy Mother the Church.
O God, almighty and merciful, grant us through this Holy Sacrifice, joy and peace, a holier life, time to do penance, grace and consolation of the Holy Spirit, and perseverance in good works.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
