Have you ever been afraid of what people might think of you? It might have been during that awkward, overly self-conscious period in junior high school, where popularity and acceptance from peers meant every-thing. Or perhaps it was when you had to give a speech in front of a group of people and could feel all the eyes in the room were on you. Perhaps it was the first job interview, or maybe it was when you were trying to make a good impression on your future spouse. Whether you share one of these experiences or have one of your own, we all have been concerned at one time or another about what others may think about us. As Christians, we, too, can be assaulted with the fear of how others will perceive us, but these fears are not justified in God’s social economy. If we fall prey to the god of perception, image, and acceptance, it will only handicap us as we seek to server God. Moses was certainly afraid of how he would be perceived by his fellow comrades and he wondered if they would even receive him and God’s message of deliverance. Moses was so fearful that it nearly prevented him from entering into the joy of the Lord’s service and all the blessing that come with being used by God. God had a Promised Land flowing with milk and honey awaiting Moses and the children of Israel, but Moses seemed content to stay in the desert. We can do the same. We can limit the fullness of God’s blessing in our lives when we allow ourselves to be swayed by fear. Many people are crippled by fear. Unfortunately, allowing fear to keep you frozen really only leads to your hurting yourself. Yet 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Don’t miss out on God’s best. Don’t forfeit what God has for you simply because of the fear of failure. We can get so comfortable and set in our ways that we are unwilling to change. We can be unyielding to change, even when it means that change is for the best. What we need is more faith and less fear. AS 1 John 5:4 tells us, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith.” By faith we can overcome any fear. Don’t miss out on the abun-dant life that God has planned for you by allowing fear to keep you from serving and following God’s plan for life. By Mike Lutz
