Yet this special blend of the irrevocable gifts of God is connected to the unique calling of God for each and every one of us! Another word for “calling” is “vocation,” and the more we can live our unique vocation the more we are living-up to the unique purpose we were created for, the more we are expressing our gratitude for the gifts we received, the more we can rest in the joy that our gifts are being used in the best way possible and used to create other blessings for ourselves and others for the glory of God... the more fulfilling our lives will be! In a particular way, however, this committee will focus on encouraging others to consider if they have the calling to the priesthood and religious life. It is important to realize that your gifts from God are all signs of your calling from God! For example, if you feel a joy in leading people back into the joyful participation of the Church, you may have a vocation to the priesthood! And I hope you all have had special memories with priests and religious in your lives—as I’ve had! Even if you already enjoy the knowledge and peace that you have already found in your unique vocation in life, I need your help! For example, everyone can pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life, as both are needed now more than ever! I can assure you that your prayers for me were critical in my journey to the priesthood, and I have never been happier than now, serving as your priest! Also, please feel free to contact me if you wish to either formally be a part of this ministry to foster vocations, or if you would like to meet to discuss the unique vocation God may have for you in your life! - Fr. PASTOR’S MESSAGE

As religious leaders of Boca Raton representing churches, synagogues and mosques, we come together with respect for each other: for the values we share and for the differences we honor. We recognize that this is a challenging time in the life of our nation.

In Charlottesville we witnessed the violence and hatred expressed and perpetrated by Neo- Nazis, klansmen, white supremacists and white nationalists. And we join together to condemn their ideologies and the dangers these groups represent to an open, respectful, democratic, free and pluralistic society. We also mourn the deaths of Heather Heyer, State Trooper H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke Bates. We extend our prayers and condolences to their loved ones.

In the last century, we witnessed the extraordinary evil and destruction that white-supremacy and Nazi ideology can wreak. Nearly half a million Americans gave their lives in World War II to counter totalitarian fascism, and thousands more have given their lives to fight against those who do not hold dear the rights and freedoms that form our society’s bedrock.

The United States of America is founded on the principle that all are created equal, endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Those rights are for all Americans with no exceptions or exclusions. We are saddened by the lack

of clear moral leadership in our nation. As Elie Wiesel wrote, “And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever, wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must - at that moment - become the center of the universe.”

We hold as an article of faith that every human life is created in the divine image, and is of infinite and equal value. Therefore, we condemn the rise of racist and bigoted ideology. We encourage government leaders and law enforcement to pursue justice, to stand against hate crimes and to protect the rights of every individual. We encourage our parents and teachers to lead by crying out against expressions of racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, misogyny and homophobia. We must stand with the vulnerable against those who seek to persecute and intimidate.

As leaders of different faiths working respectfully for the common good of our community and all people, we ask everyone to join us in condemning hatred and violence. Please also join us for an interfaith candlelight vigil on

Monday, August 21 at 8 pm at Sanborn Square Park in downtown Boca Raton. We, as citizens of this city, this state and this nation know that we can model behaviors of respect and tolerance for all. We are called to stand together as people of faith and as patriotic Americans.

Monday night, August 21, over two hundred fifty participants from Christian Churches, Jewish Temples and Islamic Mosques gathered in Sanborn Park in downtown Boca to sing hymns, hear witness reflections, listen to a Unity Message from the clergy present and, most importantly, to pray together. We prayed for peace and unity in our country, for an end to racism, anti-semitism, ultra-nationalist hateful rhetoric and actions. We prayed for the victims of the Charlottesville terrorism and for mutual understanding and civility in civic discourse. Our lighted candles brightened the night and symbolized our commitment to life, justice and peace among all peoples.

I was struck especially by the cumulative effect of faithful people from all faiths united around their clergy and together making the statement that God is to be loved and worshiped and that all people are God's beloved children. I linked arms with Islamic Imam Fathi Khalfi and Rabbi Dan Levin as we looked out at the linked arms of so many people of all faiths yet one family in prayer, hope and common vision. Out of tragedy can come good and that was true last night. We all prayed that what we pledged to accomplish together will truly come to pass with the grace of God. This was a night to remember in Boca Raton. Amen.

Below is the corporate statement of the religious leaders of Boca Raton. I present it for your prayerful reflection.

DARE TO CAREThe St. Joan of Arc Care Ministry and food pantry has been in existence for many years now and has served our community by helping people with everything from rent, utilities, child care, automobile maintenance, food and many other various needs. The money that we receive from our generous parish benefactors is such a blessing, not only to the people who receive the aid, but also to our volunteers who interview the clients and determine if we can help them. When a client is moved with gratitude for the aid that we have given to them, our screeners are proud to say that it would not have been possible to help if it were not for our generous parishioners. At this time we are looking for a few people who would like to volunteer in our Care Ministry Crisis Center. The hours are from 9:00 am to noon during the weekdays and the volunteers can pick how many days that they would like to work in a month. Some of our volunteers work two days in a month others work one day a week, but they all come away with the same satisfaction of knowing that they were involved in giving aid to someone in need. So if you feel that you have the time and the desire to help out in our Crisis Center please call Deacon Bill at (561) 952-2828 and volunteer your time and talent to help your neighbor in need.

There's no better way than to end the first week of school than with a hot cup of coffee and with your friends. Over 50 parents stopped by the Erin Go Brew hosted by the Home and School Association. SJA parents enjoyed a continental breakfast while meeting and socializing with other parents. This was a great time for families to catch up and for our new parents to meet some of our veteran parents.

GET READY FOR CHANGE By Mary Katharine Deeley

The last long days of summer are always a paradox. We anticipate the break in the summer heat and look for the crisp, cool air that refreshes us.

Children play outside as though they can’t get enough of summer even as they get new school supplies and look forward to seeing their friends. Everywhere is a sense of change. Something is about to happen, and we won’t be the same.

I wonder whether Peter felt the same way. He and the disciples had seen Jesus heal, cast out demons, and teach the ways of God. But did Peter and the disciples really know what they were getting into or who they were following? Students are often tested at the end of summer vacation to see what they’ve learned and retained. Did the disciples have any sense that this might happen to them? Change is in the air and, ready or not, the lessons of the past are about to be put to the test.

“Who do you say that I am?” Jesus asked. Peter’s answer shows he’s been paying attention. He names Jesus for who he truly is—the Messiah.

Peter gets more than he bargained for. His name is changed, his life is changed, and he finds himself at the head of the class. Maybe he longed for the time he could fish all day, but now he’s headed toward Jerusalem on the path that brings him face to face with the living God.

Vacation is almost over for us now as well, and school will soon begin. What have we learned from our encounters with God this summer?

Are we open, as Peter was, to be really changed by him?

A WORD FROM POPE FRANCIS

Peter knocks at the door. Behold! There is joy, there is fear... “Do we open, do we not?”...Fear paralyzes us, it always paralyzes us; it makes us close in on ourselves, closed to God’s surprises. This detail speaks to us of a constant temptation for the Church, that of closing in on herself in the face of danger. But we also see the small openings through which God can work....Prayer enables grace to open a way out from closure to openness, from fear to courage, from sadness to joy...from division to unity.

—Mass and blessing of sacred pallium for new archbishops, Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, June 29, 2016

• How willing are you to let the pope, Peter’s successor, confirm your faith today?

• What are you doing to ensure your faith is built on a solid foundation?

Isaiah 22:19–23 “I will thrust you from your office and pull you down from your station.”

Romans 11:33–36 For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Matthew 16:13–20 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

CELEBRATING OUR BIG CHURCH By Fr. Thomas Richstatter, OFM

When I think Catholic, I think big. The Catholic Church is a big Church: big numbers (over one billion members) spread all over the globe and big buildings—

But before we get carried away with too much of this external bigness, it might be good to remember that the Church was Catholic already at the first Pentecost, before there were any big cathedrals, parking lots, or a billion members. The Church was Catholic even when the disciples could all gather in one house.

Catholic implies big or universal—not just on the outside but big on the inside. Catholic is a mark of the inner nature of the Church. The Church is Catholic because it is all-embracing. The Catholic Church is the sacrament, the outward sign of a God who is Catholic, a God who is all-embracing and wants to share the one eternal banquet with people of every race, language, and way of life.

The Church is Catholic because, like God, it is not limited to one country or culture. In ancient times it was able to move from its Aramaic/Palestinian origins and adopt the language and culture of Greece to preach God’s message. It then expressed itself in Syriac and spread to India and beyond. It expressed itself in Coptic and spread to Egypt and throughout Africa. It adopted Roman customs and Latin language into its rituals. It employed Greek philosophy to explain its beliefs. It used the Roman legal system to organize its hierarchical structure. The Church is Catholic because it can take whatever is good in disparate cultures and embrace it as its own.

A WORLD OF DISCIPLES The Catholic Church is not limited to one interpretation of what it means to be a disciple. When people, moved by the Holy Spirit, decide to live the gospel in a unique way, they don’t have to start a new Church. The Catholic Church has room for a Benedict of Nursia, a Francis of Assisi, an Angela Merici, to name a few. There are many ways to live the gospel within the Church. That’s what makes it Catholic.

Just think of the diverse groups that may exist within your own parish: Daughters of Isabella, Knights of Columbus, Opus Dei, St. Vincent de Paul Society, for example. It’s a big church. It’s a Catholic Church.

But what happens when our Catholic Church embraces people we don’t like or don’t agree with. (For example, most Catholic would have difficulties with at least one of the organizations listed above.) When this big, all-embracing Catholic Church welcomes people who don’t think like I do, and when I have to worship with people different from me, I sometimes wonder if it would be better to belong to a little Church where everyone is more alike.

Lord, you entrusted the keys of the kingdom of heaven to your people. Help me be your wise and responsible servant. Amen.

GROWING, BECOMING Being Catholic isn’t always comfortable. It stretches me to think new, bigger thoughts. Our Church is not the place for narrow minds or one-issue religion. And this has been a problem from day one.

Jesus himself was too Catholic for some of his contemporaries. He dined with the wrong people, cured the wrong people, and made friends with the wrong people. His Catholicity was a scandal because his embrace was so inclusive that he shed his blood for all.

Being Catholic is not only a mark of pride; it is a challenge. Catholic is not only something that the church is. It is something the Church continually strives to become.

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property.

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you’d like to make.1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed.2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.)A bequest can be made in a number of ways:• A specific dollar amount.• Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property.• Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan.• A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.• An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc.

STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you’ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney.

An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits.

As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes.

STEP 4 Contact us.We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.)
