GREETERS Geoffrey Hodgson and Spencer Mooney
Preparation for Worship
To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of
God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:12-13
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of
slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we
cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of
God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ. Romans 8:14-17
And he said to him, “Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.” Luke 15:31
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:18
“Can a woman forget her nursing child,
that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget,
yet I will not forget you.” Isaiah 49:15
“Yes, I'm adopted.
My folks were not blessed
With me in the usual way.
But they picked me,
They chose me
From all the rest,
Which is lots more than most kids can say.”
― Shel Silverstein
THE ORDER OF WORSHIP
The Prelude piano-organ duet
Matters of Church Life
+The Call to Worship Psalm 27:1,10
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
For my father and my mother have forsaken me,
but the Lord will take me in.
+The Hymn of Praise (stanzas 1, 2 & 4) Hymn No. 92
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
Love divine, all loves excelling
Joy of heav’n, to earth come down;
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling,
All Thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation,
Enter ev’ry trembling heart.
Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
Into ev’ry troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit,
Let us find that promised rest.
Take away our bent to sinning,
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.
Finish then Thy new creation,
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee:
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heav’n we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love and praise! Amen.
Affirmation of Faith Galatians 3:23-27 Unison
Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming
faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that
we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a
guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.
Corporate Prayer
+The Hymn of Thanksgiving (stanzas 1, 2 & 4) Hymn No. 108
Before the Throne of God Above CCLI License #11216176
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav'n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart
When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end to all my sin
Because the sinless Saviour died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me
Behold Him there the risen Lamb
My perfect spotless righteousness
The great unchangeable I Am
The King of glory and of grace
One with Himself I cannot die
My soul is purchased with His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Saviour and my God
With Christ my Saviour and my God
Presentation of Tithes & Offerings
The Offertory Caleb McCreary and Tim Grider, duet
For the Beauty of the Earth Public Domain. Words: Folliott Pierpoint. Music: Conrad Kocher.
For the beauty of the earth,
For the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies.
Refrain:
Lord of all to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.
For the wonder of each hour,
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower,
Sun and moon, and stars of light.
For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild. (Refrain)
For the church, that evermore
Lifteth holy hands above,
Offering up on every shore
Her pure sacrifice of love.
For Thyself, best Gift Divine.
To our race so freely given,
For that great, great love of Thine,
Peace on earth and joy in Heaven. (Refrain)
+The Doxology and Prayer of Dedication
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
+Hymn of Preparation (stanzas 1, 2 & 5) Hymn No. 379
How Deep the Father’s Love CCLI License #11216176
How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory
Behold the Man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished
I will not boast in anything
No gifts no pow’r no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
The Scripture 1 John 2:28-3:3
2 28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence
and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may
be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
3 1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of
God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we
know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And
everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
The Sermon Growing in Christ: Orphans Life #1 The Rev. Russ Hightower
Notes:
Knowing Jesus Changes Everything Greatest Commandment (Dt.6:5; Mk.12:30) heart, soul, mind & strength – the whole person
Hearts (worship): falling in love with Jesus (Lk.24:32) Minds (Bible study): thinking like Jesus (Rom.12:2)
Hands (missions): living like Jesus (Jn.13:14)
+The Hymn of Response (stanzas 1 & 4) Hymn No. 185
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small:
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
The Benediction Galatians 4:6-7
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba!
Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
