of a Fair comes to ArmstrongKids, teens and adults

alike will gather to “Catch the Buzz” at the 113th Annual Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stam-

pede August 29th to September 2nd.The Honey Division will set the tone for some of your favor-

ite activities while the IPE team is also preparing some new attractions for the family.

With the return of more than 220 vendors, as well as the 4-H demonstrations, West Coast Amusements, Kids World and various entertainment acts, there will be plenty of activities for the thousands upon thousands of people who will attend.

“Everyone’s got their favourites, that’s a huge consideration for us when organizing it,” said Bryan Burns, General Manager of the IPE.

And there is always something new to see as well.In past years the numbers seem to fl uctuate around the

150,000 attendance mark and this year should be no diff er-ent.

“It blows me away the number of people who come out,” said Burns.

All the IPE team can do is hope that the weather holds out for the duration of the fair.

“We just want good weather,” said Burns. “That’s something we can’t really control, all we can do is set the show up and make sure it’s entertaining for people.”

Non-stop fun for the whole family includes activities rang-ing from amusement rides to live concerts and entertain-ment, barn tours, baby animals, and even the birth of a baby calf is possible.

The Rodeo takes place in the evening, but during the day there is plenty to see in the Main Ring. Or you could check out the 4-H shows and livestock that will be on display each and every day.

“Our barns will be full, from the chickens to the cows, and from the alpaccas to the goat milking,” said Burns.

“There’s all those agricultural things that are great because a lot of people have never seen or experienced that before.”

Also back for another year is the Iron Chef competition, which has become a major hit in recent years.

The competition will be running twice a day, with the fi nals on Sunday. Continues on page 4

Some new attractions and performers will join the IPE this year including Xtreme Wild Educational Animal Show, Charlotte Diamond, Neale Bacon, and Chainsaw Carvers who will be joining the West Coast Logging show.

“They’re really cool, and they’ll be making things right on site,” said Burns.

Back for their second year are the Trials Stars bike team who got a bit of a boost from last year, going from two shows per day to three at this year’s IPE.

While agriculture is still the main focus for the IPE, Burns knows the importance of adding new fl are each year.

“We want to stay with our traditional roots of agriculture and make sure we have that aspect, that’s why we’re an agriculture fair. But we’re always trying to fi nd new things to add and make it special,” said Burns.

As a community event, the IPE likes to support local causes, and according to IPE President Jeanne Noble Har-ter, Huntington’s Disease struck a chord with staff .

“We know so many people in Armstrong who have been aff ected by it so it really hit home for us,” said Harter. This year, the Huntington’s Society - North Okanagan Chapter will benefi t from Sunday’s Charity Day.

All about All about thethe

ThemeThemeThis year, the Interior Provincial Exhibition is going to get a

whole lot sweeter as the honey division takes over at the fair-grounds.

In the fi ve years since General Manager Byran Burns has been involved, themes have become more popular and more suc-cessful year after year, and it’s fun to see what people will come up with in honour of the theme.

“This one’s a great one, it’s easy to work around. Lots of peo-ple can work around ‘Catch the Buzz,’” says Burns. “I think it’s tak-ing off more, and if you get a good theme, people can do all kinds of great stuff .”

Last year’s fl oral theme was a huge success. Communities in Bloom played a huge part in the overall appearance and will be returning this year to help beautify the grounds.

If you’re planning on attending, ‘bee’ sure to Catch the Buzz and show your support for the honey division at this year’s IPE. Andre Lodder

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEIt is with great pleasure that I extend on behalf of the Board of Directors, a hearty welcome to come and join the excitement of the 113th Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stampede. Try your hand at milking a goat, or maybe try building your very own world-class zucchini racer, or check out the interactive 4-H area, or learn how to grow the largest pumpkin, or feeda bird, or fi nd out where honey comes from. It seems there is no end to what you canlearn about agriculture while exploring the fair grounds. While agricultural awareness and education are a large part of the IPE, there is somuch more to see and do. You can watch the Mini Chuckwagon races, check out theagricultural equipment displays and the commercial displays, ride the midway, watcha logging show, watch the pro rodeo, listen to some great music and eat some fabulousfood, and much much more…. You will fi nd something for every age at the IPE. We are pleased once again this year to be hosting the Wrangler Tour Finals Pro Rodeowith the Calgary Stampede as the offi cial stock contractor. Get ready for fi ve action-packed evening performances at one of Canada’s highest rated rodeos.I wish to extend a huge thanks to our Board of Directors, our many volunteers, IPEstaff, our sponsors, and the communities of Armstrong and Spallumcheen. ANDRE LODDER..............................................................................................................

Oh to be a kid again, or for some to remain one as the Kids World is back with more activities and more fun at this year’s

Interior Provincial Exhibition. This year will again prove to be a good one with new

entertainers as well as returning ones to keep your kids busy throughout the duration of the IPE.

New this year is Xtreme Wild, an interactive educational show that features animals from the zoo.

“So many kids and families have never seen these animals, so it will be a great opportunity for people to learn,” said Bryan Burns, General Manager of the IPE.

When they’re not putting on a show, Xtreme Wild will be offering other things like camel rides.

After checking out some of the animals in the zoo, kids and families will get the chance to interact with other animals at the petting zoo and pony rides, a major hit among the young at the IPE.

Hang on to yer hats, it’s Rodeo Time!!it’s Rodeo Time!!

The Interior Provincial Exhibition wouldn’t be com-plete without the rodeo.

The Wrangler Tour Rodeo Finals will once again take to the grounds at the IPE in one of the most exciting and enter-taining rodeo shows in Canada.

“It’s the finals of the top ten rodeos in Canada. All the best cowboys and all the best stock,” says Bryan Burns, General Manager of the IPE.

World-renowned announcer Randy Corley from Washington state will keep everyone informed, while award-winning rodeo clown CrAsh (Ash) Cooper will be enter-taining the crowd with his comedic cowboy antics.

“Cowboys love it, fans love it,” says Burns.Rodeo tickets are already going fast and Burns expects the seats to

be limited come opening day.“It’ll be sold out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We have a lot of

people for Wednesday and Thursday but they’re not sold out yet,” said Burns.

The smaller arena allows for a unique and up-close experience that can’t be found elsewhere.

“It’s probably one of the best rodeos in Canada, people don’t real-ize that. Under the lights, 5,000 people, it’s great action and great energy in there,” said Burns.

The intense rodeo competition won’t be the only thing enticing crowds. Trick rider Niki Flundra (formerly Cammaert) is back and sure to be a hit with her all-new show.

There’s a limited number of seats available so call the IPE office at 250-546-9406 to reserve your tickets now. You don’t want to miss it! Andre Lodder

For some people riding a horse is difficult enough, but people like Niki Flundra (formerly Cammaert) see it a whole different way.

Known for her trick-riding prowess, Flundra will be taking an all-new act to the Interior Provincial Exhibition.

Originally from Rockford, Alberta, Flundra has been a trick rider for 16 years. She’s appeared in the Calgary Stampede eight times, the Canadian Finals Rodeo 14 times, and every major rodeo across Canada at least once.

She’s appeared at the IPE in the past as a trick-rider, but never like this.

Instead of performing her usual tricks while riding, Flundra will be performing what is known as a liberty horse act.

“It’s probably the first time Armstrong has seen anything like it in probably a long time,” said Flundra.

A liberty act is completely different from trick-riding. The horses are free of any reins or saddles.

The horses perform according to commands which are usually given by voice or movement without even touching the animal.

According to Flundra, it’s definitely something that the crowd should get excited about.

“If they know horses they will really truly appreciate what it is I’m doing, but even if they don’t know horses, it’s still really entertain-ing.”

The act isn’t about the acrobatic skill that’s involved with trick-riding, but rather to show an appreciation for the horses and their capabilities.

Flundra is excited to return to Armstrong with her new show as part of a rodeo she describes as one of the best.

“It’s one of my favorite rodeos in Canada. You can’t beat the crowds, the energy or the atmosphere,” said Flundra.

Morning Star StaffThey chop. They roll. They saw. They climb. And they delight audiences of all ages every time out.The West Coast Lumberjack Show returns to the Interior

Provincial Exhibition Aug. 29 to Sept. 2.“I think they’re going on year number 11 and we keep talking

about changing them up but we have such great support (for the shows),” said Bryan Burns, IPE general manager. “The grounds are packed for their shows, and we love having them back.”

The show is made up of four professional lumberjack athletes, all of whom are either current or former Canadian champions in the various events, as well as an emcee to guide the action.

Events include log rolling, underhand and standing block chops, a hot saw race and, arguably the most entertaining event, pole climbing, where a pair of lumberjacks race up a large pole, ring a bell at the top then scamper their way back down to the ground.

The aim in log rolling is not to get wet.A lumberjack from each team will rock and roll on a 17-inch

diameter, lathe-turned, cedar log trying to dump the other off. First to two wins takes the best-of-three event.

The hot saw race is exciting and it’s loud.Lumberjacks use specialty-tuned and piped power saws pitted

against a stock power saw to cut through a 13-inch diameter log. This race is a quick one with the cut taking about six seconds.

The standing block chop will see the two-person teams send out one lumberjack to use a specially filed racing axe to chop a stand-ing log with the least amount of swings. One will chop through half the log and then the other lumberjack will take over and finish the cut.

The underhand chop is about speed and power.A lumberjack from each team stands on top of a 12-inch diam-

eter log, chopping between his feet until he reaches the halfway point. Then he’ll turn and cut in from the opposite side, working his way furiously through. The first man to cut the log in half is declared the winner.

At the IPE, the West Coast Lumberjack Show runs three shows each day, Wednesday to Sunday, at noon, 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. They are located on the ball diamond directly across from the Nor-Val Sports Centre.
