Learning News ReadingStudents will be reading the story “Because of Winn-Dixie” in the new basal reading series. They will practice skills including summarizing and story structure. This includes plot, conflict, and resolution. When summarizing, students will learn the Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then template to assist in writing a summary. Students will also work on these skills in small reading groups when reading stories on their individual reading levels.
Writing/GrammarStudents will work on writing paragraphs for story prompts. On Fridays, they will choose a prompt to revise, edit, and publish. Students will also review several grammar skills including subject and predicate, sentence fragments, complete sentences, contractions with not and fluency.
Word StudyStudents will be grouped according to developmental spelling stages as demonstrated from a spelling assessment last week. Each student will be given a sort to study this week with a spelling homework contract. Word Study tests will be given on Fridays and contracts will be due on Fridays. MathSOL 4.1 We are working on Place Value and Comparing Numbers in Math. We are also focusing on Multiplication Facts and the importance of memorizing the facts through the 12's. We will continue working on those until every child has mastered them. VA StudiesSOL 4.2 We are beginning to explore Virginia and are working on the Bodies of Water, States that Border Virginia and the Regions of Virginia for the next several weeks. ScienceSOL 4.1 We have been discussing the Scientific Method and will begin our first unit on Force, Motion and Friction this week.
Health NewsNew school rules no longer allow any birthday treats to be brought in and shared with the class.Our classrooms are to be nut-free when considering any foods brought in our rooms.
HomeworkPlease check your child’s agenda nightly for homework assignments given each night. Please initial in agenda when assignments are completed. Teachers will be checking agendas daily. We appreciate all of your support!

child’s daily folder that is to be kept in the
large binder. I will ask that you initial your
child’s behavior chart each night. I will ask
that you sign the sheet called “A Week’s Worth of Work” showing that
you received your child’s graded papers
for the week. It is important that you take
a few minutes to go over these graded
papers with your child. Thanks!
