Oremus pro invicem “Let us pray for each other” Father Edward C. Hathaway, Rector
DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC?
Each of us is called to evangelize, sharing the Gospel and our faith with others. One way is to support individuals who might be interested in becoming Catholic or learning more about the Catholic faith. Or perhaps you or someone you know were baptized Catholic but never received First Holy Communion or Confirmation. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program addresses the spiritual needs of those who have never been baptized in any Christian faith tradition, those who were baptized in another Christian faith and those baptized Catholics who seek to receive their First Holy Communion or Confirmation. Our Basilica RCIA classes will begin meeting weekly on Monday, September 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the parish Lyceum at 313 Duke Street. The classes will be in-person but we can coordinate online instruction for anyone who cannot attend in-person. We also have separate classes to prepare children or youth over the age of seven who have not yet been baptized. For more information and to register, contact Sara Schiedermayer, Assistant Director of Religious Education, at [email protected] or 703.836.4100, extension 3023.

A GRACE-FILLED VISIT BY RELICS OF SAINT PADRE PIO
My thanks to the many people who visited the Basilica on August 20 during the hours the relics of Saint Padre Pio were on display. What a wonderful, grace-filled day. I especially appreciate the contribution of Father Jerome Fasano, Pastor at Saint John the Baptist Church in Front Royal, VA, who celebrated our 12:10 p.m. Mass that day and offered a reflection on the life of Padre Pio after Mass. An outstanding preacher and teacher, Father Fasano has a deep devotion to Padre Pio and a keen understanding of the humble Italian priest’s spirituality. We were blessed to have Father share his gifts with us. Thank you, also, to the Knights of Columbus for reverently keeping the day organized. Their presence is always welcome whether they are serv-ing as ushers at Sunday Mass or keeping watch when we have groups of people visiting the Basilica for special events. They truly exemplify their motto: In service to One, in service to all. May God bless and reward you.

August 24 — Saint Bartholomew, Apostle. First century. Preached in India and Armenia where, according to tradition, he was flayed alive. August 25 — Saint Louis. King Louis IX of France. Model ruler and father of 11 children; Franciscan tertiary who cared especially for lepers. While on crusade, he died of the plague near Tunis in 1270. Saint Joseph Calasanz, Priest. Founded (1617) Clerics Regular of Religious Schools, today about 1,375 religious, dedicated to helping poor children. August 26 — Saint Monica. Born in Roman Africa; died in 387. After 30 years of prayer, she gained the conversion of her pagan husband; under the guidance of Saint Ambrose, she also converted her eldest son, Augustine. Patron of mothers. August 28 — Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. After a dissolute life, he was baptized at age 33. Elect-ed bishop of Hippo Regius. Noted for his Confessions and City of God. A founder of Western monastic life, his rule is observed by many religious communities today. One of four great doctors of the Latin Church. Died in 430. August 29 — The Passion of Saint John the Baptist. Anniver-sary of Saint John’s martyrdom. The feast originates in the celebration of the dedication, perhaps on this day, of the Church of Saint John at Sebaste (Samaria) where, according to tradition, John the Baptist was buried by his disciples.
MONTHLY NOCTURNAL ADORATION People are needed to adore our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament during monthly Nocturnal Adoration at the Basilica of Saint Mary. Nocturnal Adoration begins on the first Friday of each month at 9 p.m. and ends at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Vocal prayers during Nocturnal Adoration follow the Little Office of the Blessed Sacrament, consisting of Psalms and beautiful Eucharistic meditations. To sign up or learn more, please contact Helen Lynch at [email protected].
Q: What language did Jesus speak? A: It is the general consensus of religious scholars and historians that Jesus pri-marily spoke Aramaic, the traditional language of Judea in the first century A.D. Jesus spent most of His time in and around Nazareth and Capernaum in Galilee, which were Aramaic-speaking villages. (The first-century Jewish historian Jose-phus noted that Aramaic was widespread in the Middle East at that time.) The Gospels support this view showing Jesus using various Aramaic terms such as ephphatha (Mark 7:34), eloi eloi lama sabachthani (Matthew 27:46), abba (Mark 14:36), mammon (Matthew 6:24) and maranatha (1 Corinthians 16:22). Like many people of His day, Jesus probably knew enough to communicate in the other common languages of the culture around Him: Hebrew and Greek. Hebrew was used mostly by the learned, scribes and teachers of the law, and was spoken and read in the synagogues. Greek was the language of the ruling Romans, making it the language of politics and commerce. With this knowledge, Jesus likely spoke in whichever language was most suitable to His audience.

FARM GLEANING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FAMILIES WELCOME!
Catholic Charities is seeking volunteers to help feed the hungry by gleaning crops on a One Day Mission trip to the northern neck of Virginia. “Gleaning” is the traditional biblical practice of gathering crops that would otherwise be left to rot in the fields or be plowed under after harvest. The freshly gleaned pro-duce will be transported back to Catholic Charities' St. Lucy Project Food Warehouse and given to those in need. Mission trips are offered on the first Saturday of each month through November and are a great service project for church groups, families, book clubs and confirmation students (with parental supervision). You can sign up for a gleaning trip at https://tinyurl.com/farmgleaning2020. For more infor-mation, contact Commissioned by Christ Farm Gleaning Mission Trip Volunteer Coordinator Tom Pedagno at [email protected].
2011 EARTHQUAKE A 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Central and Northern Virginia at 1:51 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. Saint Mary Church was among the structures damaged that day. The quake’s epicenter was near Mineral, VA, 39 miles northwest of Richmond and 87 miles from Alexan-dria. Seismic waves radiated in all directions from four miles below the earth’s surface. The earthquake reportedly was the strongest recorded east of the Rocky Mountains since 1944 and the strongest ever record-ed in Central Virginia. It was felt as far away as Atlanta to the south, Canada to the north and Illinois to the west. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported. Tremors were felt very strongly throughout our area, cracking the Washington Monument and causing $20 million in damage to the National Cathedral in DC. A pipe broke in the Pentagon, flooding two corri-dors. In Old Town Alexandria, historic Gadsby's Tavern and City Hall sustained damage. Fallen or cracked chimneys could be seen on some mostly older homes throughout town. Here at Saint Mary Church, the top of the inner wall at the back, or east side, of the church crumbled, sending bricks through the stained glass win-dow above the tabernacle. The debris “took out the right arm of Jesus above the tabernacle,” then-pastor Father Dennis Kleinmann wrote in his September 4, 2011 bulletin column. The church had been filled with the usual complement of worshipers for the 12:10 p.m. Mass that day but was empty when the earthquake struck. What a blessing!
The rectory and Father Rankin House next door sus-tained minor damage. Damage at Saint Mary School was limited to a toppled statue of the Blessed Mother. Thankfully, the church was still structurally sound. The back wall was shored up for repairs, requiring scaffolding in the church and a lot of noise during the day (work was stopped during Mass). The church was open throughout the process “but it may not be con-ducive to prayer,” warned Father Kleinmann. The total cost of the repair work was in the $200,000
range. Because the Arlington Diocese wisely had earthquake insurance, the cost to the parish was the deductible of $1,000. The arm of the corpus was shattered and beyond simple repair. The entire corpus was removed from the church so a new arm could be made. For weeks while that work was underway, the cross above the tabernacle was starkly bare. The repaired corpus finally was returned to its proper place in December 2011. “Jesus is back!” Father Kleinmann told parishioners. — Diane Maple, Bulletin Editor
