the scoop AUGUST 22 2012 Last week I shared some of the highlights from our school survey that I did over the scheduled interview days. It is good to sometimes stop and reflect on the effort and partnership of our wider school family and the impact that has on the school we have. Like our families our school has high expectations. It starts with our vision based on the Kahikitia Tree - not the biggest tree but the tallest with a strong root system. This symbolises our vision statement of creating the right atmosphere with learning - both socially and academically. We aim to help every student develop a strong foundation from which they get the chance to realise and grow their individual abilities and to thus have the opportunity to stand tall - again both academically and socially. Our school values further example and encourage this: - Positive Relationships 'Kotahitanga - Getting along together' - Integrity 'Ngakau Tapatahi - Doing the right thing when no one else is looking' - Self Improvement 'Whakapai Ake - Be the best you can be' - Caring for the Environment 'Te Papa Atawhai - Reduce, reuse, recycle and restore, replenish' However, these are easy to list and read but not always easy to encourage and example. A school community's actual attitudes and values are a reflection of every families attitudes and values - and we're all different! What we encourage and discuss at home is what our children then reflect at school. This is where a respectful and high trust partnership between home and school is so important and we are grateful for the support and encouragement from you our parents as we work together to give our children the best possible start to their education. You don't always realise how special it is until you're on the other side looking back! I would like to welcome Steve Broad (yes he’s standing for council) to our school and to his posting as a student teacher in Miro - Room 5 with Mrs Kahukura for the next 5 weeks. It is always great to support the teachers of tomorrow in their training to realise their potential! Check out the photos over the page from the Year 5 & 6 Netball team's game in Stewart Island last week. It was a great day - both for the children and adults concerned - but Rod Sinclair and I need to work on our shooting for the next parent game! Last week I shared some of the highlights from our school survey that I did over the scheduled interview days. Our school values further example and encourage this:

- Positive Relationships 'Kotahitanga - Getting along together' - Integrity 'Ngakau Tapatahi - Doing the right thing when no one else is looking'- Self Improvement 'Whakapai Ake - Be the best you can be'- Caring for the Environment 'Te Papa Atawhai - Reduce, reuse, recycle and restore, replenish'

However, these are easy to list and read but not always easy to encourage and example. A school community's actual attitudes and values are a reflection of every families attitudes and values - and we're all different! What we encourage and discuss at home is what our children then reflect at school. This is where a respectful and high trust partnership between home and school is so important and we are grateful for the support and encouragement from you our parents as we work together to give our children the best possible start to their

education.

Week 6 Term 3MANUKA welcomes Hannah to our class and hope she enjoys our happy bunch. We have been applying the 'Mrs Gren' characteristics of living things to plants and have been amazed to discover that a plant ticks all the boxes. (Moves, reproduces, senses, grows, respires, excretes and needs nutrition) Ask your child how it does all of these! Liz Devery has kindly been sourcing a few supplies to create 'truffula tree' costumes for production. If you are available to help discuss ideas please come along next Thursday (30/9) at 2.30pm to the staffroom. Thanks. Certificates: Finn Pierce for reading and Seren Carr for writing.

KOWHAI have been exploring how describing words can help us paint a picture in our minds as we read. After reading our big book about whales we know what 'breaching' and 'spyhopping' are- ask us! We are learning to paint a picture in the minds of others too through our sense poem writing. We hope you enjoyed reading our published stories about fruit - you can read some more on our blog. This week we have been using our senses to describe popcorn! In maths we have been talking about shapes. Do you know we can find different shapes all around us? Play shape "I-spy" with your family! Remember to describe how many sides and corners you can see. Certificates: Ollie Davis

RIMU are working on our skip counting for maths this week and continuing on with fractions looking at 1/4's and 1/2's of groups. We are learning to write persuasive arguments. We are giving 3 or more reasons why something is a living thing. It is good to see so many children bringing healthy choices such as fruit and vegetables for brain food as this is a great way to get one of the 5 servings needed each day.Certificates: Carter Dermody, Dylan Marwick

RATA Production is coming up fast. We will begin putting our dance together next week. The costumes have been started. As part of our costume the children willneed a hairband. It would be great if you could send one to school. Thanks to the parents who already have. We have been learning about honey bees and hear are some interesting facts. • Honey bees have a basket on their back legs that they carry the nectar in. Liam• Bees are very important pollinators because they are the best at pollinating. William• You can make plasters out of honey. Ingrid, • Bees communicate by doing a dance. Sophie

MIRO are very excited to have Mr Steve Broad in our class for the next five weeks. If you pop in, remember to say hi:)We have made a decision on our costumes for the production. For these we need donations of large pieces of card. Recycled T.V/ fridge boxes would be perfect.• We learnt about habitats in our inquiry and I am making a tri-a-rama habitat for a dog. Holly• Do you know what an ecosysytem is? Visit my blog to find out. Olivia http://teammiromb.blogspot.co.nz/ and click on student blogs.Have a great weekCertificates: Olivia Horton, Ollie Polascheck

TOTARA Great to see so many keen parents adding constructive comments to our kidblogs! This is so motivating for our children to have a wider audience, thank you.We are well underway with constructing our costumes for the production. We are exploring what sort of happy fishy music to use for our dance.Certificates: Oliver Phillips for being an observant and kind friend. Great kotahitanga!Jack Pagan for writing a great explanation of what makes a thing living using MRS GREN.

KAURI • This week we are starting Jiboo, our class market every Friday afternoon. Kauri have been designing our money and rules for market and business running. Sophie• The disco was awesome, I went as Elvis! The refreshments were great too. I really liked the ice-cream and pop corn. Mac• I am really enjoying the news we are doing in class. I like looking for my topic in the newspaper, it's something we do at home and we talk about the news more. Jaimee

MATAI• Oliver B - We learnt about global warming and how it happens. we learnt that the ice is melting and the sea levels are going up. It's going to flood some islands!• Sophie W - This week we found out what parts we have in the production. I'm a narrator and we got the script so we could practise. It's awesome.
