Meg also shared morning tea with members of Book Club. Meg was open and honest, and engaged students to actively participate in her talks, highlighting the importance of descriptive language to enrich writing. Using all a writer’s senses and gaining a wide range of experiences are important in good English language skills. It was also an opportunity to recognise some of the students who are great friends of the Library. Nikora Davis (7 Evans B), Abigail Jones (8 McGarry B), Loopa-Wise Nabubie (7 Evans B) and Holly Watson (8 Golding B) were all recognised as students who use the wide range of books available to borrow from the College Library. On Thursday, 19th August, 60 Year 11 and 12 students and over 15 staff braved the elements, sleeping outside in the College undercroft, to experience what it would be like to sleep rough. Students were only allowed to bring a cardboard box, a pillow, a sleeping bag and the clothes on their backs. Each student was meticulously searched by staff to check for contraband. Sergeant Rambo Boscarino was on call to assist, although he was more partial to pats from the students. The evening commenced in the Paul Rafter Centre with a welcome and brief introduction to the evening’s proceedings. Students located their sleeping spots in the Undercroft near two firepits. Thank you to Ms Tammy Johns for providing meals for students and staff. Miss Ayla Bridger-Morgan from Vinnies and Mr Damian Walsh from The Shopfront spoke to our students and staff about the challenges of homelessness and the services offered by each organisation. Ms Paula Angel provided a very personal and realistic account of being homeless. Clarkson Police Officers visited the College to enforce a move on notice to our staff and students during the evening.

Students raised over $2,000 and donated many food items which will be donated to Vinnies as part of our Winter Appeal. Thank you to all students and staff that participated in the Sleepout, especially Miss Anna Argese, Mrs Adele Baker, Mrs Kim Boscarino, Mr Peter Boylen, Mr Ned Bryant, Mr Matt Byrne, Miss Sarah Dalton, Mr Sean Doe, Miss Cat Harrison, Miss Jayde Harvey, Mrs Caitlyn Hoad, Miss Tammy Johns, Miss Jess McGaw, Mr Kieran Parkes, Mrs Gill Pearce, Miss Chelsea Sidaway, Mrs Michelle Smith, Miss Jess Stylianou and Mr Tony Summers.

Prayer, Service & Justice Day Staff celebrated Prayer, Service and Justice Day on Friday, 20th August. Each year, we focus on a different element of our College motto. This year, our focus was on Service. The theme for the day was ‘Never see a need without doing something about it’ from the words of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, who founded the Josephite Sisters and became Australia’s first Saint. Staff members worked together in groups to complete a service activity of their own choice in light of Sister Irene’s sense of social justice and service for others. Sister Frances Maguire, supported by Sister Maree Riddler, presented to staff about the life and legacies of Sister Irene McCormack. Father Marian celebrated our Mass. The day concluded with a reflective slideshow of the various service activities. Thank you to all staff involved in the preparation and organisation of our Prayer, Service and Justice Day. Mr Andrew Donaldson Assistant Deputy Principal Campus Ministry

Year 9 Japanese Student Excursion

On Wednesday, 25th August, the Year 9 Japanese Students visited the Hyogo Prefecture Cultural Centre in Perth. Hyogo is one of 47 prefectures (states) in Japan. Hyogo and Western Australia are sister states.

The students tried their hand at Japanese calligraphy, learned about Hyogo and created tourist posters in Japanese about Hyogo. They were treated to an Obento Lunch which contained some foods they had never seen before, which they were able to try. It was a great opportunity to learn about Japan and experience Japanese culture. Mr Maurice Bonarrigo Japanese Teacher

Dance at Catholic Performing Arts Festival

On Wednesday, 19th August, the Senior and Junior Dance Troupes travelled to the Perth Convention Centre to perform at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. Leading up to the event, students had been polishing their routines. During the day the students travelled to the Perth Convention Centre for a rehearsal. They had the opportunity to practice their routines on a full stage. Students were filled with excitement as they entered a performance space that was so large. They rehearsed their routine and special patterns in the new performance space. At the evening performance, students were prompt to arrive at the venue and modelled a mature theatre etiquette from the moment they arrived. After performing magnificently during the first half of the show, students celebrated backstage and waited for results from the adjudicators to arrive. Ella Roy Broyd and Elloise Erikson accepted the feedback on behalf of the troupes. The adjudicators had a positive response, and loved the creativity and commitment the students gave in their performances.

Thank you to Mr Tony Summers for his support throughout the day rehearsal and evening performance. Thank you also to Junior and Lyrical Troupe choreographers, Miss Eve Basson and Miss Ally McGaw, for assisting backstage during the evening performance. I’d like to extend appreciation to all parents/guardians for their continued support. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to perform at the Festival this year and I look forward to an amazing Dance Night that we have planned for tonight. #Bringiton Miss Jessica McGaw Dance Teacher

Drama Night Please join us to watch the Year 11 and 12 Students perform their solo pieces at this year’s Drama Night. We hope to see you there. Ms Tammy Brankstone Drama Teacher
