Hello all,

As I write this on the first day of September, on

Father’s Day I reflect on how blessed I have been

that within my immediate family there have been

no cases of childhood cancer. As we are all so well

aware that is not the case for many Australian

families who have faced those devastating words

from their doctor – “Your child has cancer”.

September is Childhood Cancer awareness month in

Australia and I ask you all as individuals and Clubs

to please give some time to making your local

community aware of the need for further research

and what we as Lions in Australia are doing – we do

not have access to unlimited funds, but what we

have achieved over the last 10 years as Lions,

Lioness and Leo’s you should all be proud of. We

have initiated several projects that were

Australian and world firsts – the first ever

Clinical Trial into Neuroblastoma in 2012, the

purchase of DFMO Drugs for a trial in NSW when

no one else in the world were prepared to fund in

2015 and the world first whole genome sequencing

of children with high risk cancers by Garvan

Institute – The $4million Lions Kids Cancer

Genome Project, are three outstanding

achievements for ALCCRF and Lions Australia.

The Board of Trustees are aware that we may

have confused some Clubs with our Fund-Raising

Promotions this year, with Lions Biggest BBQ

for the first 6 months, then Julikemychops in

May-July and currently encouraging support

through local schools of attempting the

Dear President and Members

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is Childhood Cancer awareness month, and I ask that you make some effort to recognise this in some way, be it an awareness day for what we as Lions are doing to improve the lives of Australian Children, in your local shopping centre, at your Bunnings BBQ or any other activities that you may undertake during the month. Supporting the ALCCRF Fund Raising initiative of Lions Longest Coin Line, or making a donation to us so that we can continue in efforts to eradicate the disease would also be greatly appreciated. ALCCRF is well recognised by Clinicians and Researchers throughout Australia, leading to increased requests for funding grants – this recognition could only have happened because of your support of the Foundation over the last 10 years, but our task is not over – not until there is a 100% survival rate and every child is living a healthy life

History of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month In 1990 US President Bush proclaimed October 1990 as National Awareness month for Children with Cancer, but it was only for the one year. In 2012 President Barack Obama issued a proclamation that September would be, then and always Childhood Cancer Awareness month

For promotion material support in your are please contact your local District Chairperson, or feel free to contact me at E: [email protected]

What a great effort by these two Clubs, Thank You

The $24,771 cheque presented to ALCCRF at

the MD 201 Convention in Geelong was money

raised by the Lions Club of Kingsborough in

Tasmania

The amount pledged from the Lions Club of

Riverside Tasmania was $15,000 per year (not

$5,000 per year as stated) and this presentation

brings their total for 3 years to $45,000

JULIKEMYCHOPS Report 2019 The ALCCRF Trustees wish to thank those Lions Clubs who supported this year’s Julikemychops which ran during the month of July. This project was launched in 2018 but really took hold during and after the MD 2019 Geelong Convention, where conventioneers were encouraged to take the project back to their Clubs and find one or more suitable candidate to grow their sideburns or chops and shave them off at the end of July. Fundraising using the caption – Giving Childhood Cancer the Chop - allowed Clubs to lodge the funds collected online through the portal –My Cause or direct by cheque to our Treasurer PDG Rob Skeen. At the time of writing the money is still rolling in and a final total will be announced at the next Trustee meeting in November in Sydney. However, trustees would especially like to thank the following Chop Growers and their band of supporters, namely David Schofield, Norman Fiske, Jason Cain, Philip Watson and Brook Arelette who finished up as our top fundraisers. A special mention should also go to Norman Fiske who shaved off his 40 year old Chops and Des Gellert who did the same to his Chops of 28 years! This desire to farewell their much loved facial hair for the sake of sick kids, just goes to show the dedication of some wonderful Lions and their supporters. A mention in dispatches also goes to Jason Cain and Duncan Crombie from the Hudson Institute in Melbourne, who following a visit from the ALCCRF Trustees in 2018, mobilised a team to find time away from their research into finding a cure for Childhood Cancer, to fundraise on behalf of Julikemychops. A special thanks must go to our Chop Master Lion Brook Arelette who was instrumental in introducing the concept of this project to Lions and not only participated as a Chop grower and fundraiser, but actively promoting the JMC project to the masses. Thanks also to the ALCCRF Trustees, who without their support and encouragement – this success would not have been possible. PDG Peter Lamb ALCCRF Trustee

Recently Trustee Peter Lamb attended the Collie Lions

Club (W2) to present a Gold ALCCRF Award for their

support of the Lions Biggest BBQ which has seen them

raise over $15,000 over the past four years.

Collie is a coal mining town in the SW of WA which also

supplies the bulk of Perth’s power generation. The Club

meets at the Old Ewington School which is a heritage

listed building used exclusively by the Lions.

The Club conducts a wood raffle in conjunction with

their BBQ which included hamburgers, sausages, onions

Briagolong and District Lions Biggest BBQ

On a lovely winter’s day in May we held our Biggest BBQ for ALCCRF. It was a real

community picnic in the park.

Local organisations we thank for the loan of equipment are the Briagolong CFA,

Briagolong RSL and the Briagolong Mechanics Institute.

Thanks for the performances by the Briagolong Primary School Choir, the Briagolong

Kinder, the Briagolong Junior Dance Group and a local band “The Buttons”.

The display of vehicles, of all kinds for “The People’s Choice” Award came from locals

to those as far away as 50kms and this year’s People’s Choice Award was won by a

local boy for his display of old lawn mowers and chainsaws.

A local lass this year had her hair shaved off, and as she said, “I have a choice, but

many poor kids don’t”.

A big thank you for all the work from the Lions members and the great support from

the community.

Lions Biggest BBQ Report

The winning Club in the draw for 2019 Lions Biggest BBQ prize

went to the Lions Club of Tamborine Mountain in Q1. The Club

received a Matador 6 Burner Hooded Boss BBQ (including the

kitchen sink) which was again supplied by Bunnings, from their

store at Oxenford, who kindly delivered the palletised prize

by a Hiab vehicle, way up Tamborine Mountain.

Club Secretary John Hammond thanked the organisers for

their BBQ prize and advised a forthcoming Board meeting would decide how best to dispose

of the weighty BBQ, probably by a raffle.

In the preceding 12 months, the Lions Biggest BBQ has raised in excess of $250,000 and

although the competition for the BBQ prize finished on the 30th June, Lions Clubs may still

conduct their BBQ’s in support of this major fundraiser for the ALCCRF.

Organising Trustee Peter Lamb thanked all the Clubs who have annually supported the

Biggest BBQ project, with some regular supporting Clubs going as far back as 2013. During

this time nearly $2,000,000 has been raised simply by Clubs conducting a good old sausage

sizzle, to assist research into a cure for childhood cancer.

Lions on a mission to break a world record raising funds for Childhood Cancer Research

• In recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, Lions are encouraging Australia to support Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation

• Lions attempting to break the world record for ‘Longest Coin Line’ with 5 cent pieces before providing the funds to Lions Australia Childhood Cancer Research Foundation

• Over the past 10 years, the Australian Lions Childhood Research Foundation has raised over $10 million for Childhood Cancer research including$1.3 million of the current $4 million Lions Kids Cancer Genome Project with the Garvan Institute

DATE: September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and this year Lions across Australia are on a mission to not only raise awareness and much needed funds but also to break a world record while doing so! Kickstarting this month, Lions Coin Line fundraisers for Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation will be held in communities across the country. All funds raised will be converted by Lions to 5 cent pieces and will be used in an attempt to break the break the Guinness World Record for the longest coin line which currently stands at over 75 km. This year Australians are being encouraged to get behind the Lions Coin Line fundraising for Childhood Cancer. “Over 2000 children and young Australians are diagnosed with cancer each year in Australia and sadly one in 5 of these children will have a relapse. Many of these cancers are aggressive and hard to treat and we are losing too many young lives. Although survival rates have improved greatly for some, most cancers take a toll on young people’s lives and often side effects of treatment can be serious and lifelong,” says John Thorpe Chairman ALCCRF. “At Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation we believe every child deserves a chance at a healthy life. Over the past decade Lions has raised over $10 million to fund vital research into childhood cancer. The past couple of years have been particularly exciting for us with some ground breaking major research projects including our current $4million Lions Kids Cancer Genome Project with Garvan Institute,” adds Vice Chairman Tony Roney The personalised medicine program for children with cancer provides whole genome sequencing and analysis of tumour and normal tissue for children with high-risk cancer in Australia. The project brings together state-of-the-art capability in whole genome sequencing and analysis at the Kinghorn Centre at Garvan Institute and Australia’s national personalised medicine program in childhood cancer – the Zero Childhood Cancer Program, led by Children’s Cancer Institute and the Kids Cancer Centre, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. “Over 200 children are now enrolled in the trial and the results are exceeding expectations,” says adds Tony Roney.

Whole genome sequencing makes it possible to develop personalised cancer treatment for each individual child. In addition, it identifies genetic changes in each child’s DNA that might predispose to cancer, helping to build up a database of genetic risk factors that could assist with prevention and treatment strategies in the future. “Our Lions Coin Line fundraisers this year will help support more of this vital research . We are encouraging families, workplaces, community groups and schools to join us through holding a Lions Coin Line fundraiser to help raise awareness and much needed funds for Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation,” says ALCCRF Appointee Katherine Moore “All funds raised throughout the year will be used to attempt to break the record for the World’s Largest Coin Line next year. We are aiming to raise over $250,000 worth of donations,” adds Katherine Moore. The Lions Coin Line Guinness World Record attempt will be made in Newcastle in October 2020 using all funds raised between September 2019- September 2020. Dear Fellow Lions,

As a fundraiser for Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, we are attempting to break the record for the Longest Coin Line in the Guinness Book of Records. This attempt is being

coordinated by the Lions Club of Elermore Vale in District N3 for ALCCRF in November 2020.

We call on all Lions Clubs to contact their local schools personally and request them to hold a coin line during the month of September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. We envisage each child will bring coins to lay down in a line and would encourage staff and parents to do likewise. The school is then welcome and encouraged to take a picture of the line and their students and post it on the “Australian Lions Longest Coin Line” Facebook or Twitter or Instagram #LionsCoinLine pages set up for this challenge.

We are hoping that community members will also hold their own coin line. It is an easy project and a lot of fun. It raises the profile of Lions Clubs and publicises the wide range of work of Lions. It also provides a great photo opportunity for your local media.

Lions Clubs are requested to collect the money from their participating schools, staff, parents and students, then deposit it in the ALCCRF bank account.

The organisers will then convert the funds to 5c pieces. They will be laid out in accordance with Guinness World Record Rules. The schools we have approached so far have been very keen to get involved because, as you would expect, every school has been affected in some way by childhood cancer. Recently a two-hour collection at the Newcastle Supercars Race raised $1409, which demonstrates just how willing people are to contribute to this cause.

It is anticipated that this could become an annual event, to be held in conjunction with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September each year. Lions will break the record sooner or later, and will no doubt continue to lift the bar. In that way young Australian Cancer sufferers will benefit accordingly each year.

Your club may already donate to ALCCRF via one of the other project ideas. We thank you for your help. If not, maybe this is a project that your club would like to help us with. We only need approximately 76 km of coins to break the record! Last year, in a little over 6 weeks we were able to raise enough money to lay 10 km of coins. We are pacing ourselves this time by launching the attempt in September 2019 and laying the coins in November 2020.If you need any further information, do not hesitate to contact the Organising Committee Chairman, Garry Patten, at [email protected] or phone on 0402837901 or District Chair Kate Moore N3 [email protected] or phone on 0409228075. We will be available to answer your queries. If your club is unable to work with your local schools, please consider holding your own coin line. It is a great way to talk to people in your community. You never know you may interest a couple of new members.

Yours in Lionism,

Lion Kate Moore 201N3 District Coordinator
