Ashtabula County's Superfund Sites: A Photo Ethnography by Ryan Cook and Richard Bargielski In 1980, the U.S. Congress passed, and President Jimmy Carter signed into law, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) to address severe environmental pollution in American communities. "Superfund Sites" were the most contaminated by hazardous compounds due to improper management and considered harmful to the health of humans and other species. Between the 1990’s and early 2000’s, five Superfund Sites in Ashtabula County were cleaned up. This photo ethnography examines the cultural legacy and impacts of the Superfunds on their surrounding landscapes and communities through an innovative collaboration between local photographer Ryan Cook and environmental anthropologist Richard Bargielski of the University of South Florida. The exhibit, on display in the William Tokarczyk Exhibit Gallery through the month of August, tells the story of the sites through the words of local residents. Viewers are invited to participate in creating a history of Ashtabula's industry and environment by providing comments on the exhibit throughout August.
