The LMS, located on the St. Martin’s University campus, is a place for people to use high-tech equipment — they might not otherwise have access to — and share supplies, skills, ideas, and work together on projects. Currently, the space includes Computer Numerical Control (CNC) laser and CNC plasma cutters, computers, 3-D printers, table saws, drill presses, lathes, sanders, hand tools, and sewing and embroidery machines. How can I use the Lacey MakerSpace? The LMS, set up similar to other non-profit membership organizations, allows business owners and community members to pay monthly fees to use the space and the state-of-the art equipment. St. Martin’s University (SMU) and South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) students will pay fees through their educational institution to use the space. In addition to higher education and start- ups, LMS hopes to partner with Veteran organizations and established entities, like the Port of Olympia, for continuing education opportunities. The Lacey MakerSpace is open: Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2–8 p.m. Saturdays from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. In the near future, they will offer classes in design, woodworking, manufacturing, and more. Who Benefits from the Lacey MakerSpace? The LMS will help economic development, business owners, and students. Members can prototype new products; gain skills and hands-on experience, important to entering the workforce; and complete projects with the advanced tools and equipment. Community members can also use the space to create and complete personal projects. what are all those lines for?

Building a deck? Planting a tree? Installing a fence or mailbox? Any type of digging requires a call to 811 before you begin the project to protect yourself and others from unintentionally hitting underground utility lines - such as water, electricity, and natural gas.

After you call 811, they notify the affected local utility companies about your intent to dig so they can send locators to your dig site to mark the approximate location of buried lines.

The City of Lacey is responsible for marking all the city-owned underground utilities, such as water, sewer, and storm lines. We also provide locate services for LOTT’s reclaimed water lines. We use a different color to mark each utility (i.e. blue for water, green for sewer, etc.).

Last year, we completed 6,473 locate requests! We receive these requests, daily, through an auto-mated system and are required by law to complete them within two business days of receipt. Due to a large number of requests, we have had to dispatch up to five employees, at times, to comply with State of Washington mandates!
