Scone ADFASJewelled Journeys – The Art of Opulent Travel, with Lecturer Mr Andrew Prince. Tuesday 13 August.Throughout history, travelling has been used to display wealth, power, status as well as a useful tool to control over mighty subjects.

Today, we take a journey as a matter of course, not thinking much of a distance of 100 miles or more. In the past it was very different as an Aristocrat had to take not only clothes, but food, furniture, cooking facilities, tents, and the like, not just for himself and family but his household as well.

In this talk, Andrew shows the many lavish and opulent accessories and modes of transport that were used by Monarchs and Aristocracy alike, to ease travel while on the seasonal “progress” to and from each others’ estates, and where diplomatic meetings between kings turned into a contest of rivals to see who could outdo each other in the fi nest accommodation, jewels, silks, retinue and luggage train.

Andrew’s taste for fi ne ‘costume jewellery’ can be traced back to an antique market, where he came across a late Victorian brooch set with what he initially thought were emeralds and diamonds. They were, in fact, crystal and green glass set in silver and gold. He realised that beautiful jewellery didn’t require expensive stones, and that it was the elegance of the design and the quality of the workmanship that truly mattered. Private commissions then started to trickle in. The trickle turned into a fl ood, as celebrities such as Michael Jackson (a large crystal and pearl shoulder jewel) and Shirley Bassey (necklaces) were seen wearing Andrew’s creations.

In 2002, the V&A commissioned a collection of jewels to accompany the resplendent tiaras, Past and Present exhibition which became one of their most popular exhibits. The exposure gained by the show then led to Andrew’s jewellery appearing in fi lm.

In 2005, he was asked to make tiaras and jewellery for Mrs Henderson Presents starring Judy Dench. In 2009 pieces were commissioned for The Young Victoria starring Emily Blunt and Miranda Richardson. In 2012, he was chosen by the creators of Downton Abbey to supply a large collection of jewellery for the third series. The characters played by Maggie Smith, Shirley Maclaine, Elizabeth McGovern and Michelle Dockery were all adorned with elegant tiaras.

Lectures commence at 6.30pm at Scone Arts & Crafts Hall, Kingdon Street, Scone. The Scone Arts & Crafts building is situated in a quiet street in Scone where there is adequate street parking. Annual membership fee $130 per person, visitors $25, members’ guest welcome. with visiting ADFAS members and students free.

August 2019 - Up Country Entertainer - 5www.huntervalleyprinting.com.au/Pages/Entertainer.php

As Benjamin Singleton would have celebrated his 231st birthday on 7 August, Singleton Council is encouraging individuals, community groups, organisations and businesses to get involved in the bicentennial of the arrival of the European exploration party to Whittingham in 1820.Overseen by the Singleton Bicentennial Commemorations Working Group, Back to Singleton 2020 is a whole-of-community commemoration focusing on the history of St Patricks Plains as well as what people love about living, working and playing in Singleton.

The offi cial weekend of events will be held on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 March 2020, with a community street party in John Street on Friday night and a community festival at the Civic Precinct on Saturday afternoon. A formal event will be held in the Civic Centre on Saturday night.

Mayor of Singleton and chair of the working group, Cr Sue Moore said the vision was for a program of events over the weekend and throughout the year to cover the entire local government area.

A Back to Singleton 2020 Event Prospectus is now available to assist individuals and groups to start planning their own events and get involved.

“We’re looking to sporting clubs to host a home game or preseason match that weekend, or your community organisation to hold a concert, a reunion or a historical display,” Cr Moore said.

“We’d also love businesses to get into the spirit and pubs and clubs to think about a historical theme for their entertainment, or to organise a special menu or event to refl ect on the history of Singleton and the opportunities for our area into the future.

“You don’t have to concentrate your theme on early pioneers – you could focus on any historical era, century or decade related to the Aboriginal or European inhabitation of Singleton.”

The bicentenary marks the exploration party led by John Howe and including two Aboriginal guides, Myles and Mullaboy, as well as Benjamin Singleton, who came upon the Hunter River at Whittingham on 15 March 2020, bestowing the name St Patricks Plains and proclaiming “as fi ne a country as imagination can form”.

Cr Moore said the commemorations were designed to bring people from all cultures together to mark the signifi cance of the Singleton local government area to Aboriginal and European settlements, and its continued historical and economic importance to NSW.

It’s also not too early for locals to plan to be tourists in their own town for the weekend, or for former residents or visitors to plan a trip back to Singleton for the occasion.

“With less than a year to 2020, we’re encouraging all community groups, venues and businesses to start planning their own events for Back to Singleton 2020,” she said.

“And let us know at Council so we can include it in our event program and promotion, so that people can start planning their weekend – and indeed their year – of commemorations to include a trip back to Singleton.”

The Back to Singleton 2020 Event Prospectus is available at www.singleton.nsw.gov.au or contact Council on 02 6578 7290 for a hard copy to be mailed to you.

Anyone is invited to submit an Expression of Interest by 31 October 2019 for their event to be included on the offi cial Event Program and in promotional material for Back to Singleton 2020. You will also receive an Event Host Kit and an exclusive invitation to the Back to Singleton 2020 Event Launch later this year.

Remember ‘Happy Days’ and the Fonz? Experience a taste of that time with a visit to the Olympia Café in Murrurundi. The Olympia was a local Greek café that was saved and rebuilt in one of Murrurundi’s old General Stores. Just off the Highway in Haydon Street, it is located in what is known as Fox’s Store, a large corrugated building that, in its heyday, serviced the community with all their everyday needs.

Brainchild of the owners it was their intention to generate memories of what it was like growing up during the 50’s and 60’s, and it appears to be hitting the spot for many.

Not only can you enjoy a milkshake, ice cream sundae or spider, there is also light meals and cakes. While you are there you can browse the eclectic array of antiques and collectables.

If its history you enjoy, visit the Murrurundi Medical Museum in the same building. This is a unique lifetime collection of medical, dental and pharmaceutical items dating back to the mid 1800’s. It boasts a doctor’s surgery, dental surgery, two pharmacies, an operating theatre and an exhibition telling the story of polio in Australia. It even has an Iron Lung on display.

So next time you are in Murrurundi slip in to Fox’s Store for a peek into the past.

Dental disease in Cats Feline Tooth Resorption is a syndrome in cats characterized by the resorption of the tooth. It is one of the most common diseases of domestic cats, affecting up to two-thirds. Purebred cats, especially Siamese and Persians may be more susceptible than other breeds.Resorptive lesions look like erosions or small holes on the surface of the tooth, where the tooth meets the gum line. These affected teeth are often covered with calculus or extra gum (see image).

It is a progressive disease, usually starting with loss of the tooth root and leading to penetration of the inner pulp cavity. Resorption continues up the tooth towards the crown. The outside enamel is also resorbed causing the tooth to fracture and break off.

Clinical signs:

• discomfort while chewing • “mouth chattering” • Not eating • dehydration • weight loss • tooth fracture

The only treatment for this condition is tooth extraction, because the lesion is progressive. Infl ammation plays a big role in progression, so to prevent this we recommend feeding Hills T/D dental biscuits, fresh raw chicken necks, & strips of raw steak from a young age.

To provide optimal health and quality of life for your kitty, good oral care is vitally important. For the month of August, Pet Medical are offering FREE dental checks to help keep your pets smile healthy.

This year, with your help, we aim to raise $700,000 for the Emergency Services Foundation, Lifeline and the Black Dog Institute to improve support services, fund research, remove stigmas and raise awareness of mental health issues like depression, post traumatic stress injury and suicide, especially for those within the emergency service and defence communities.

• 1 in 4 Australians will suffer from a mental illness in their lifetime

• Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44

• 3,000 Australians die by suicide every year, an average of eight people every day.

• 10% of our emergency services members suffer from PTSI

• In 2015 alone, 41 members of the Australian Defence Force died by their own hand on home soil, which is more than we lost on the battlefi eld during 14 years of war in Afghanistan

• Between 2001 and 2016, 373 members of the ADF took their own lives
