Romans 12:15

A man by the name of Neil Brennan has a special on Netflix called 3 Mics, in which he delivers poignant laugh-out-loud comedy alongside very personal and often gut-wrenching stories from his life. Many of which involve his own journey of family dysfunction, anxiety, depression, and a host of other deeply human emotions.

In his stories, we were not only invited into his journey of life, but we were able to connect with our own experiences of sadness and longing. It was, surprisingly, a binding experience.

When it was over, Amy and I sat in stunned silence. That was so cathartic. I thought to myself, “could it be that laughter and joy are not so different from one another physiologically?”

Support Our Mission to Cuba – September 2018

This September, Erica Moore will join a group of Presbyterians from around the country with The Outreach Foundation. They will once again travel to Cuba to encourage, support, and pray for the Church’s mission there.

On Sunday, August 26th, we will hold a “Bakeless Bake Sale” in support of Erica’s trip. Join us in supporting Erica and raising funds for an important cause!

Campus Life

A Youth for Christ Ministry

Campus Life ministry is active in all four of the county’s high

schools. It combines healthy relationships with creative

programs to help young people make good choices, establish a

solid foundation for life, and positively impact their schools.

Campus Life seeks to engage young people to experience a balanced life, mentally,

physically, spiritually, and socially. Additionally, Campus Life encourages young people

to become lifelong followers of Jesus Christ.

July Session Minutes

July Session was CANCELLED.

On August 19th, Elizabeth Macinata (who attends WPC) will be joining us in Godly Play to teach us a bit about China and to teach us some songs in Chinese! Why China? In her own words:

"My interest in China came from three directions: first, when I was 4 years old, my father, who had spent 15 years as an automotive engineer in China, taught me how to sing Jesus Loves me in Chinese; second, I hold a masters' degree from IU in East Asian History; and finally, I am in the process of writing my father's biography. That's what brought me back to Wabash after 62 years." I know the kids had fun learning a bit of Laos when the Thammavongsas visited us. I think this is a great opportunity to learn more about another country and broaden our worldviews a bit... not to mention, learn a little Chinese. :)

Hope your kids will be able to join us!

Calling All Volunteers!

WPC’s Children’s Ministry is growing and flourishing! Our group of children ages 4-12 have fallen in love with Godly Play. The Godly Play routine brings the liturgy and tradition of our Presbyterian service to an age appropriate level. Just like adult service, children yearn for the consistency of worship from week to week. The Godly Play routine is specific and scripted, making volunteer preparation straightforward. Everything needed for the lesson is provided, and the timeless stories and materials are used year after year.

The impact Godly Play has on our children far exceeds the time commitment needed from volunteers. Would you consider becoming a part of the wonder and learning of Godly Play?

Please consider signing up to serve as the Children's Greeter, 3-4 times throughout the year. The time commitment is from 9:40-10:10am.

Celebration Sunday

Sunday, September 9th is our church-wide kick-off celebration. Choir will resume rehearsal and leading in worship, Adult Sunday School resumes, and Mid-Hi Commitment Class will begin.

Also, we will be celebrating the graduations of a few of our Godly Play kids into Worship, nursery graduations into Godly Play, and dedicating Caleb Bartkus!

Following worship, will be our annual BBQ Chicken pot luck, with activities for children and families outside on the lawn.

Mid-Hi Commitment Class

Beginning September 9th, students grades 8 and up are invited to join in a 10-week course confirming their commitment to growing in faith in Jesus Christ. Classes will take place Sunday mornings, 8:45-9:45am in the Dickson Room of the Christian Education Building. This course will cover the overarching Biblical principles of Christian Faith, as well as disciplines that help us grow closer with Christ. Course will be led by Pastor Jonathan and a group of Commitment Class Sponsors. To sign up, please contact the church office at 563-8881.

New Member’s Orientation Class

This Fall, WPC will once again offer its new member’s orientation class, beginning Sunday, October 7th. This 3-week orientation will take place at 11:30am following worship, will last 45 minutes, and will include lunch for all participants. If you are interested, please contact Pastor Jonathan or the church office.

workshops: music, decorative woodworking,

sketching, architecture, and hands on art. We used

the story of Ruth and Boaz to explore the idea of

kindness. Staff from the Wabash Public Library also

came and read stories about kindness to our

campers.

Family Events

Last fall, we offered a Spa Day for our girls, where

we learned to be more intentional with what

products we use on our bodies. We talked about

taking care of ourselves because God thinks we are

beautiful! We also offered a few Minute-to-Win-It

style games during Community Meals for our

church family to have some fun together. This

coming year, we hope to offer more opportunities

for families to gather together to have fun and

grow together.

Spiritual Direction

Though new, I hope to offer a one-on-one or small

group setting to continue helping kids connect with

God in ways that are natural to them. In our time

together, we look for the “fingerprints” of God and

then respond through prayerful art and play.

There are many roles in Children’s Ministries—

teaching, praying, providing snacks, greeting

families, donating materials or financial gifts, event

planning/help, and more. We need all of you in

some way. Please feel free to reach out to me to

talk about how God might be calling you to support

our kids. Let’s show these kids how much we love

them—and that God loves them, too!

Do you realize everything that Children’s & Family

Ministries involves? I invite you to read over the

following programs and initiatives, pray for them,

and ask God where He’d like you to help raise our

kids in Christ.

Sunday School – Godly Play and Nursery

This fall, we kick off our Nest Godly Play room,

specifically designed for kids Preschool through

Kindergarten. We’ll also keep our current Godly Play

room and gear it toward students in 1st-4th grade.

Our kids get to experience God through the stories

we tell and then respond to Him through work/play.

Our littlest kids in the Nursery receive glimpses of

God’s love through the actions and words of our

nursery volunteers.

Laos Partnership

Our kids are sponsoring the education of two

students in Laos ($90 each for the year). They are

also keeping in touch with the Thammavongsa

family and some of the children they work with

through our pen pal program.

Summer Mentoring

In 2017, I met with four girls one-on-one to practice

methods of engaging the Bible, such as imaginative

prayer, hand copying Scripture, and song. This

summer, four girls met as a small group to learn

from counselor Elizabeth Dyson how to manage

emotions in a way that was honoring to God. Girls

were given tools to explore when they typically feel

different emotions and ways to look at how they

respond during those times.

Arts Camp

This outreach event allows children to worship God

through the performing and creative arts. This

summer, we had 22 campers who participating in
