Especially as I begin ministry here, if you would like to sit down for a one on one conversation with me, feel free to pick up a Coffee Card, fill it out, and either drop it in the offering plate or just at the office and we will set up a time to talk. Sharing Our Prayers, Praise, Needs & Celebrations

Jim Rees - Please continue to keep Jim and Barbara Rees deep within your prayers. Since returning from their trip to Ireland last month, Jim has been on an intensive medical journey to identify his health challenges and to establish the most appropriate course of treatment. Most recently they met with doctors in Denver for additional tests to confirm a change in Jim’s diagnosis to lymphoma. They are so grateful for the support and prayers, calls to intercede from our church family. If you would like to send Jim and/or Barbara a card, you can mail it to their home: Jim & Barbara Rees 11675 County Road 251 Salida, CO 81201

Courtney Shucker – Many of you will remember Courtney as our delightful and jovial friend in the Salida Community. Courtney, a retired Episcopal priest, has been a guest speaker at our church many times over the years. He was involved in the performing arts throughout Salida, singing in the Freedom Choir and most recently coordinated the community sing-a-long, “The Messiah”, over the last couple of years. He could often be seen walking his three beautiful dogs around town!

We learned on July 23rd that Courtney had a massive stroke at home. He was airlifted to Swedish Hospital in Denver where he was in ICU for several days. Although Courtney was conscious during his transport and at Swedish, he has remained paralyzed on the right side, weak on the left, is unable to talk or swallow. He has recently been transported to an intensive rehabilitation center for further evaluation and support to assist him in regaining any and all the abilities that he can.

Volunteers have been coordinated to care for his home and three dogs. Thank you for your continued love and prayers for Courtney. Please keep Mike and Samar Fay in your prayers as they are the primary care givers and are coordinating the meeting of Courtney’s needs.

UPDATE: at the time of this writing we got word that Courtney’s health status had worsened and as of July 31st, he has been transported to Collier Lutheran Hospice in Wheatridge. He is in Room 207. Close friends are gathering as it appears that his time of transition may be near. Please pray for Courtney’s peace and the peace of those close to him.

Thank You to everyone who came out and helped with our Church Clean-Up Day. We were able to complete several projects, thanks to you!

Judy Eyler - Please keep Judy Eyler deep within your prayers. Judy has been patiently (and painfully) waiting for a date to have her much needed back surgery. Recently the surgery date was set and in preparation for that to occur, it was discovered that she had an obstruction in her heart that would need to be addressed first, in order to make her eligible for a successful back surgery. Judy will be having the heart procedure done, next Monday, August 6th at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs. Pray for Judy and the successful steps she is taking to restore her health and may she be soon be free of the debilitating pain she has been experiencing. If you would like to send Judy a card, you may mail it to her home address: Judy Eyler 10285 Piute Dr. Salida, CO 81201

Peaches are Coming! Order your peaches NOW! We have a sign-up sheet in Century Hall for your orders. Consider sharing a case with a friend. Thank you Judy Naviaux for organizing this.

Please keep the family and friends of Louise Welsch deep within your prayers. Louise (Lois Walrath’s twin sister) passed away recently in Milford, Nebraska. The service will be held in Milford, in August. If you

would like to send Lois and Larry Walrath a card, please mail it to their home.

Lois & Larry Walrath 9875 Piute Dr. Salida, CO 81201

Continued prayers for Fred & Olivia Harrington as they navigate Fred’s medical needs. We sure miss having them here this summer. If you would like to send them a card, mail it to their home in Texas. Fred & Olivia Harrington 609 Ferris Ave. Waxahachie, TX 75165

Please send your prayer requests, updates, celebrations and announcements to Licia at: [email protected]

PEACHES!!! PEACHES!!!

Yes, we'll have peaches again

in August, 2018!! I talked to

our “Peach Man, Brian”, and

he said the Cresthavens will be

ready after Aug. 18, and he has

lots of those beautiful, yummy

peaches.

The price is a little higher because of the cost of his boxes

going up, so they'll be $25/box this year, which is still a bargain

compared to other places selling peaches (please make checks

payable to me: Judy Naviaux). Consider ordering a box with a

friend and splitting the cost!

My biggest problem: I need a couple of people with a pickup to

go to Hotchkiss to pick up our peaches (usually around forty 20

lb. boxes). I'll reimburse you for your gas and time.

There's a sign-up sheet in Century Hall for those who would like

to purchase peaches, so please sign up early so that I can tell

Brian how many boxes we need. Or you can call me @ 719-

539-2210 or email me @ [email protected]

Thank you,

Judy Naviaux - “The Peach Lady”

Four Thousand Years of Biblical History!! Ancient oil lamps from the Holy Land

Plan to Join Us for this FREE Special Presentation Sunday, August 5 – 2:00 pm

Salida United Methodist Church

This is a once in a life-time opportunity to SEE and learn about ancient lamps from the Holy Land without leaving Salida. These lamps came from Canaan, Greece, and the Roman Empire and were used to light homes of the Byzantine, Christian and Muslim periods.

Richard Klapper, an amateur archeologist and biblical student, will exhibit, provide a lecture and answer questions on his extensive collection of over 80 ancient terra cotta oil lamps that are 1000 to 4000 years old.

Join us and learn more about these important and fascinating household items referenced so many times in both the Old and New Testaments.

Help spread the word and tell your friends! Hope to see you here on Sunday afternoon!

The Basement Renovations

Trying to find out information about the original basement has proven to me to be an almost impossible task. The only reference I can find is in the minutes of women’s societies regarding the basement after 1937, when work was done in the basement to provide a new kitchen, new bathrooms and a larger area for serving food to community groups.

The new kitchen was located at the south part of the basement, about where the bathrooms are now located. This is just off ‘D’ street and the area also provided a window where a coal chute could be installed when needed to provide coal for the winter for the furnaces which were located at the east end of the basement. The women’s groups were frequently planning for a project to raise funds for dishes, cabinets, or whatever was needed for the new kitchen.

A serving area was located (now would be in front of the closet where the hall meets the large area. This large basement area proved to be useful for community meetings and dinners for various service groups of Salida. The hallway provided an entrance to the bathrooms, which were located in the area about the location of the current shower room. In the 1960s a folding room divider was added to the basement to make the large single room into two smaller meeting areas.

In about 2006, another plan for major changes to the basement was carried out. The once area for the kitchen was moved to a smaller area just next to the shower room of today. There was no need for a large kitchen in the basement area, since there was a very large kitchen upstairs in the addition. The area of the basement kitchen was changed to bathrooms and made good use of the stairs which were installed when the addition of the Century Hall was made in 1996.

Another entry area was created during this renovation, which now made the basement handicap accessible by providing an elevator with access to the elevator from the outside.

As I mentioned, I have no info which specifically relates to any time before the 1960s. If you are reading this and were here in the church during the 1950s and remember something about the basement, please let me know.

Stained Glass Window Update August 2018

Where we are now:

The restoration of our first window (and most critically in need of repair) is well under way. The 9 x 12 foot stained glass window, in the choir room, has been removed and transported to Denver Art Glass for the restoration process. Restoration steps have been going very well, all in all. However, there was an unexpected discovery of serious disrepair in much of the curved wood throughout the window. With the seriousness of its condition, much of that wood shattered and is in need of being designed and replaced.

While the initial estimate for the restoration of this window was $50,060, we were recently notified that an additional $6000 will be needed to address the specialized wood frames in order to complete the window.

We are actively seeking your generous contributions to help fund the Window Restorations Program. Many of you have already given generously, and for that we are incredibly grateful. We are also grateful for the additional $785 received through the 5th Sunday Giving, on Sunday, July 29th. If you have been considering contributing to this program we ask that you do so as soon as you are able.

Considering recent contributions to the Windows Restoration Fund, we are, immediately in need of raising a balance of $12,000 to meet our financial commitment for the restoration of this first window.

We are working with our grant writer in preparation to submit our State Historical Fund grant application in October. We will be modifying the scope of the next phase of windows restoration to meet the feasibility of our ability to fundraise for the required 25% cash match. It is possible that we could ask for a waiver for our 25% cash match based upon our current financial commitment and demonstration upon completing the restoration of this first window.

Any Questions, please speak with Burrell Welton (719) 660-1652 or [email protected]
