Our monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month except December and January beginning

at 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post 982, 158 American Legion Road, Latrobe, PA (Pipetown).

You do not have to own an antique car to join us.

On the Cover... The Western PA Region AACA is fortunate to have several families in our membership who have been avid supporters of the preservation and enjoyment of antique automobiles for generations. The Davis family is one of them. Through the years they have cared for and restored a wide variety of unique antique vehicles. And as many of our members do, they take great joy and pride showing these vehicles at community events so that others may get a fi rst-hand look at our automotive heritage. Brothers Guy and Dave Davis’s father Bob Davis served as president of the Western PA Region in 1977. Guy’s son Ben Davis now helps carry the passion forward with his home-grown interest in antique autos. It’s an inspiration when the interest of one generation empowers another to carry on. It is also wonderful when spouses also share the enjoyment of the old cars. Dave’s wife Debi Davis really loves riding in the beautiful, original 1969 Ford Pick Up Truck pictured on this issue’s cover.

2017 Visitation Car Truck & Motorcycle Show Thank You

Our 8th show at Visitation Church in Mt Pleasant was held on July 2nd, and it was another big success. This is hugely due the participation of the Western PA Region of the AACA. When I fi rst went to judged show I struggled to get quality judges. After joining the region I came to the membership and asked for help. What happened was overwhelming. Bob Inhoff was helping before I was a member of this club and he has been at every show since. From the club I have had the support and help from Mark and Regis Jackson, Mark and Craig DeFloria, Dave and Debbie Sheetz, Howard Finney, Tom and Dodie Ulishney, Denny and Becky Blank, Tom King, Ron and Alice Shaulis and Joe and Sheila Kurtz. Everyone I have mentioned has helped in the past and some have stepped up and helped this year for the fi rst time. If I have for-gotten anyone please forgive me. This goes to show you what kind of club this is. We all have busy schedules and I know what it takes to make the time to do this. Karla and I would like to thank this club and each and everyone one of these peo-ple from the bottom of our hearts and look forward to continued support if possible.

Please Note:Please label your baked good so we know what ingredi-ents are in the baked item, especially ‘NUTS’. Every year we are asked by patrons what is in the baked good, and sometimes we are not sure, so the item or items are not purchased. We don’t want the patron to take a chance on consuming the baked good and having a medical emer-gency due to an ingredient in it. Make sure the baked good does not need to be chilled or refrigerated, since the item/items will be sitting on the tables for several hours during the course of the car show.

If you have any questions, please contact Molly Detwiler at 724-925-2321.

Thank you for your baked food item donation to the Bake Sale! We appreciate any baked item donated and it makes the Bake Sale very successful for the club.

Antique tractors and trucks around the Cammack Station grounds

Cammack Station is a place where friends gather, people smile, and the nostalgic presence is a welcome break from today’s chain restaurants.

The quaint brick building resides on the corner of Old Mill Street and West Jackson Street just west of Muncie, Indiana. The historic building was built in 1931 and was formerly the home to multiple groceries and fueling stations, most recently Pete’s Grocery. A second renova-tion and expansion occurred in 2009 to accommodate additional seating, kitchen space, and storage. Much of the building’s history is preserved and represented in various antiques and pictures on the walls. Why is it called “Cammack” Station? Even though it has a Muncie address, it is actually located right in the heart of Cammack, Indiana. With no stoplights and just a handful of stop signs, Cammack is a quaint historic town residing just outside of Muncie and Yorktown. When the owner decided to take over Pete’s Grocery and convert it into the restaurant in 2007, it was only fi tting to call it Cammack Station. At Cammack Station, you can enjoy eating inside surrounded by historic memorabilia and oldies music. If the weather is nice, you might choose to enjoy your treat on the peaceful brick patio. Either way, you’ll enjoy old-fashioned sandwiches, one-of-a-kind burgers, home-made salads, creamy ice cream, and their famous milkshakes and sundaes. Everything is fresh because all food is made to order!

Enjoy a trip to the past when you visit Cammack Station near Muncie, Indiana

This past April while driving on the road less trav-eled by, I came across the remains of a business once common across the American landscape,

namely, the drive-in movie theater. I felt compelled to pull off the road to take a closer look at this monument from the past. The monstrous movie screen at this particular site was not a free standing structure as seen at most drive-in theaters, but was actually the back wall of a very tall narrow building. The building’s blocks which served as the movie screen still retained much of their white paint. As I scanned the parking area now overgrown with weeds and grass, I was amazed to fi nd the posts which once held the large, metal speakers still standing in rows like soldiers now tilted one way or another. In the middle of the abandoned fi eld, stood the building which served as both the concession stand and movie projection room, the stainless steel chimney used to vent the cooking fumes still protruding from the roof. I wondered how many burgers, hot dogs pizzas and boxes of popcorn were served out of that building so many years ago. In a grassy area near the base of the large screen were the rusted relics of playground equipment. The once colorful swings, merry-go-round and sliding boards now rested in an eerie, frozen brown silence. I wondered

how many laughing children enjoyed that playground prior to the start of the movie and during the interces-sion of double features. As I walked down the exit lane of the theater, I passed a small building located near the side of the large screen which contained heavy gauge wiring and fuse boxes. Perhaps the building served as a power center for the theater’s operation. Turning around to take one last look at this piece of Americana, I wondered how many T-birds, Corvettes, Chargers, Super Bees, Chevelles, Camaros and Mustangs roared into that theater. How many Edsels, retractables, ‘57 Chevys, sun roofs, and convertible watched an outdoor movie under a starry night. Undoubtedly, there were also Packards and Studebakers, Hudsons, DeSotos and all types of station wagons full of excited children mes-merized by the large fl ickering picture show. Many of the children would eventually wrap themselves in blan-kets as the warm summer day transitioned into a chilly, sleepy night. Once home, I did some research on this particular drive-in theater. It was known as the Larkfi eld Drive-In. It is located in Grove City, not far from Grove City College. It was in operation from 1947 to 1980 and had a capacity of 300 cars.

Annual Picnic Smiles Shine Once Again!

Jill Jackson calls BINGO and helps make the game fun for everyone.

Members carefully watch their BINGO cards - (l-r) Sam Snively, Barbara Erny, Carol Calabrace, Dodie and Tom Ulishney

Howard Finney (center) offi ciates the water balloon toss. Contestants start close together and take a step away from each other with each successful toss adding to the tension.

The Western PA Region AACA Annual Summer Picnic has got to be one of the most looked forward to events of the year. The Kuhns family

once again did an extraordinary job coordinating and hosting a marvelous picnic at the Cooperstown Club, Latrobe on Sunday, July 23rd. Rain clouds discouraged the “getting out” of many antique vehicles, however there were some nice ones parked around the pavilion. Although there was a little rain here and there, the weather was very pleasant. Post Avenue Catering once again provided picnic fa-vorites - pulled pork, roast turkey, pasta, potatoes, corn on the cob and rolls. The dessert table was bountiful with sweets as members brought all kinds of goodies to enjoy and share. All enjoyed the traditional picnic games. Howard Finney offi ciated the water balloon toss, which was as much fun to watch as it was to participate. (The secret is to “cradle” and “shock absorb” the water balloon as you catch it. Just watch Christopher Kuhns, who does this

with great skill.) There was also the bubble gum bubble blowing contest, horseshoe tournament and BINGO called by Jill Jackson with cash prizes, (fi ve bucks feels good in anyone’s wallet.) To help support the region’s Chinese Auction fund-raiser at the upcoming Paul P. Bell Memorial Car Show, the Picnic featured a basket contest. There was a great participation this year with many creative baskets en-tered. The top three winners were determined by ticket vote. They were Alice Shaulis, fi rst prize, Joey Vrable and girl friend Maggie, second prize, and Vickie Kuhns, third prize. Thank you participating members. These baskets will help make for a successful Chinese Auction at the car show on September 3rd. The Kuhns Family also put together a nice assort-ment of door prizes which were drawn and announced regularly. Many thanks to John Ross, Blair, John Sr., Vickie, Christopher and Stephanie Kuhns and all who helped make the 2017 Annual picnic an enjoyable success.

The Automatic Transmissionby John Kosko

John Darrison: so, angle mac, i was sitting in the pavilion at our car club’s 2017 picnic, and the members were in talkative fellowship, a lively and smooth camaraderie; and i walked over to john ross kuhns’s red 1966 Mustang, over at the end.

guardian angel mackenzie corey: you felt like contemplating.

john: yes, a union with an old car. so i sat there, near it, in my lawn chair...

mac: how did you feel?

john: it got peaceful, dreamy, you know, i’m sitting beside this gorgeous, low, sleek machine - and it brought up memories of Lee Iacocca.

mac: you felt wistful, peripatetic.

john: yeah! like i or john ross, could drive it to Lancaster even Philadelphia, and here it is, snugly resting in the green grass, a red jewel, with all that travel potential.

mac: ready effi ciency, wrought by engineers and mechanics; men of tinkering, and problem solving, and confi dence!

john: you said it. and i felt that wanderlust, that urge to nestle into its front seat, and drive.

mac: you’re transmitting fascination, john. effortless reverie, vicariousness, desire.

john: i don’t want to lose that, mac.

mac: you won’t, if you stay in the car club.

Pete was owner-operator of Orazio’s Service Garage in Derry for more than 50 years and also ran a towing service. He was a good storyteller and had some interesting towing tales. Pete loved driving his long and classy 1967 Chrysler Convertible to WPR and community events and cruises. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. We’ll miss you Pete.

Name That Car by Mark Jackson

July’s Car

Al Terek was the fi rst member to correctly identify July’s car as a 1956 Studebaker President via email. Congratula-tions Al, great detective work. Many other members took a stab at identifying the car. Since the photo was tightly cropped it was not an easy task. Above you see the entire car. Many thought it was a late model Packard, remem-bering that Studebaker and Packard had merged in the 1950’s. Look closely at the passenger compartment and you can see the foreshadowing of the compact Studebaker Lark, which was introduced in 1959.
