ensure availability prior to registering for all events and
trips. If you are unsure of your availability to attend
the event or trip, please delay signing up until you are
certain that you will not need to cancel. Many of our

News from Sunny Treasures
2017 is Sunnyside’s Year of Change! Just as alterations currently are ongoing in the villas, so too, renovations are slated for Sunny Treasures and its hallway. What won’t change though is the cheerful yellow color of Sunny Treasures’ salesroom; however, there’ll be a fresh coat of
paint. Expect to see a new laminate floor along with a new arrangement of merchandise for sale. Even the checkout counter will be in a different place!
Committee members are purchasing stylish display panels with the intention of creating such an attractive area for all those items for sale that you will want to return again and again to the new shelves, racks and cases. One intention is to make the space customer-friendly so that browsers need not worry about bumping into some thing or some one. We hope you are as excited as we are about the changes. We still do not have a date for reopening.

Books Especially for Summer Reading – All Large Print Format
Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz gives the
reader two mysteries for the price of one! He weaves a
classic whodunit worthy of Agatha Christie into an
original modern-day mystery – giving the reader two
mysteries, two detectives, and possibly two murderers.
Named one of the Must-Reads for Summer 2017.
Beartown by Frederick Backman is the story of a tiny
community that pours all its hopes for the future into a
youth hockey team. It is filled with more of the same
remarkable characters you met in A Man Called Ove
and laced with sentimentality and empathy.
The Switch by Joseph Finder is a great Summer
Thriller about how a simple mistake (picking up the
wrong computer at a security screening) throws an
innocent man into the crosshairs of government secrets
and ruthless political ambitions. The computer belongs
to a US Senator who has illegally downloaded
sensitive classified files. This novel is not only hard to
put down, but an intense and relevant tale about
government secrets falling into the wrong hands.
Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly weaves together the
stories of three women during World War II that reveal
the bravery, cowardice, and cruelty of those days.
Instead of writing “historical fiction” she manages to
examine history from a female point of view. The
result is a smart, thoughtful and old-fashioned good
read.
Not A Sound by Heather Gudenkauf is the story of a
young nurse who has lost everything after a tragic
accident - career, husband, stepdaughter, and even her
hearing. It is a riveting thriller, but it's also a moving
portrait of a woman who is stronger than she ever
believed possible, against all odds. Remember the old
movie, Wait Until Dark?
Into the Water by Paula Hawkins is another
suspense-filled story by the author of The Girl on the
Train. It is a psychological thriller about two women
whose deaths add to the list of women who have
drowned in the same river. The author uses
deceptiveness of emotion and memory, as well as all
the devastating ways that the past can reach into the
present as events dredge up secrets long submerged.

The Highlands Library August 2017
REGULAR PRINT Camino Island, by John Grisham, is a novel about the theft of some of F. Scot Fitzgerald’s hand-written original work---manuscripts--- and the unofficial recruitment of a young writer to “keep an eye on” a book-seller suspect. Description of the theft itself (with diversionary tactics using fire crackers and smoke bombs) is mild compared to the account of complex dealings among crooks, insurance companies and book dealers, which eventually solve the crime.
Kiss Carlo, by Adriana Trigiani, tells the story of a large Italian family who enjoy the prosperity that comes to America after the end of WWII. Their close ties are weakened when a nephew breaks away from the family business to find his passion in the theater. It takes a large, public show-down to lead to reconciliation between tradition and new life in the New World.
The Identicals, by Elin Hilderbrand, tells about twin girls who are physically identical but very different in personality and behavior. Separated when their parents divorced, Tabitha goes to live with their mother on Nantucket Island, while Harper stays with their father on Martha’s Vineyard. After ten years apart, they are reluctantly reunited, and their differences are highlighted by cruel, sarcastic and critical remarks. At this point scores of friends enter the story with gossip about the varied pasts of these young women, gradually revealing truths which soften their relationship.
LARGE PRINT Sunset in Old Savannah, by Mary Eddis, is about Beth and Mike, private detectives for Price Investigations, who are sent to historical Old Savannah to surveil the activities of a possibly unfaithful husband. Considering it an easy (but sleazy) job, they soon find themselves involved with the man’s murder, and their client’s need for their practical and emotional support. So much for the rule that professional detectives must stay personally uninvolved.
Cilia’s House, by C.E. Stevenson, is Dunnian House, a centuries-old gray-stone mansion located in the valley below the hills of the Scottish Border. Home for many generations to the Dunne family, it now belongs to Miss Celia Dunne, who, at age ninety, is fragile but alert, and has been considering the future of Dunnian House. Her brothers and nephews and nieces, as well as the staff of servants, all assume the heir is her eldest brother’s eldest son, who is childless, and pretty old himself. Imagine what happens when the mansion goes to her youngest son’s grandson---younger, with a sweet wife and three children. A much better choice for the future of Dunnian.
