We are excited to have Former Secretary of Defense and U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel at Scotus Fri., Sept. 22. Mr. Hagel (’64) has a strong desire to give back to his alma mater. We are fortunate as a school to have this opportunity and it will be a special evening for Scotus as we raise money for a STEAM lab (see Pg. 4). This lab would incorporate all aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math and give our wonderfully gifted teachers and students an opportunity to be innovative and creative. Education is a very fluid thing and change happens every year. As a school, I believe it is important to pre- pare our students for the world in which they will live. It is important for our students to be exposed to graphic design. I witnessed our students place at the state jour- nalism contest with very little background in this area. I think it is important to have video and audio edit- ing equipment as well. This will allow our teachers to be creative with student-produced video and allow our fine arts department to edit and create musical projects. The lab would allow our science and math teachers to go beyond the textbook and incorporate robotics and other experiments related to their specific area of study. I am excited for the possibilities this will provide for our school. Please plan to attend this celebration of our school Sept. 22. You can purchase tickets by contacting the Development Office, 402-564-7165 ext. 109. I also invite you to join Shamrock Club or Scotus Mothers Club. I will be speaking with each of these groups about ways they can help the mission of Scotus. If you would like to volunteer in our school, please contact me. Your Support Makes Things Happen From Mr. Ohnoutka, Scotus President

Greetings. I hope that you and your families are having a wonderful summer. The school year is fast ap-proaching and holds a lot of promise.

As a school, I believe it is important to pre-pare our students for the world in which they will live. It is important for our students to be exposed to graphic design. I witnessed our students place at the state jour-nalism contest with very little background in this area.

I think it is important to have video and audio edit-ing equipment as well.

There are many opportunities to help our school. I will be speaking with each of these groups about ways they can help the mission of Scotus.

If you would like to volunteer in our school, please contact me. I have some ideas for enhancing our school, but I honestly need your help to make those things hap-pen. Together, we can really make a difference at our school and in our community.

School lunches still a great value From Mrs. Bettenhausen, Nutrition Service Manager

This coming academic year, Scotus patrons will see a 5₵ increase in the price of meals to $3.10 per student; $3.55, staff; and $5, adult visitor. The increase allows Scotus to continue providing nutritional meals at a great value.

School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegeta-bles, proteins and grains that comply with limits on sat-urated fat and portion size, thus meeting the following required nutritional standards:

· Age-appropriate calorie limits;

· At least 1/2 cup of vegetables and fruits· A wide variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes

· Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)· More whole grains

The cafeteria staff continuously works to offer Scotus students healthier and tastier choices. The self-serve fruit and vegetable bar will again be included with the daily lunch. Peanut butter sandwiches will be offered as a daily entrée choice (one or the other, not both). for

25₵ a sandwich. We look forward to an-

other great year at Scotus Cen-tral Catholic. Please call 402-564-7165 Ext. 153 with anyquestions. For more nutritioninformation and governmentguidelines, visitwww.TrayTalk.org andwww.usdachoosemyplate.gov.

Parents major players in daily tasks Scotus Parents, here are some tips to help things run

smoothly in the Central Office. If students will be absent from school for reasons oth-

er than illness, a written note with the reason for and dates of absence and parent/guardian signature must be brought to the Central Office at least two (2) days in advance. Phone calls, faxes and emails will not be accepted.

If student(s) will be absent due to an illness, call the Central Office at 402-564-7165 by 9 AM each day of the absence. Faxes and emails will not be accepted. Use PowerSchool to see missed assignments.

When your student returns to school, they are respon-sible for making up all missed assignments. For questions or to have school work sent home, contact teachers via email . Addresses are on the internet at scotuscc.org under “Academics,” “Staff Directory.”

If students will be late 10 minutes or more at the start of the school day, a parent or guardian must call the office at 402-564-7165 before the student is allowed to go to class. Faxes or emails will not be accepted.

When entering and exiting the school during regular school hours, students and visitors MUST use in the EAST doors and register in the Central Office.

When submitting a check to school for payments, (1) completely fill out the check, making it out to Sco-tus; NO blanks; (2) always put students’ names andwhat the check is for on the memo line; and (3) sendseparate checks for different purchases, like tuition, lunches, sports shirts. Tuition payments should be di-rected to Mrs. Andresen and lunches to Mrs. Adams.

Civil Dispatch is a communication tool that allows Scotus to send several text message alerts to parents and students, such as changes in class or sports practice schedules and reminders of upcoming events and dead-lines. These messages are sent to your cell phone as a text message via email. The carrier provides an email address to your cell number and which is used to send that information to your cell as a text. It is vital that you contact the Central Office if you change your cell num-ber or carrier as this may effect delivery of a Civil Dis-patch message.

Junior High FBLA Earns Charter Congratulations, Junior FBLA, on chartering this

2017-2018 academic year. Last year, JH FBLA students helped with football

concessions, made Portacath pillows for cancer pa-tients, had a Christmas party, participated in FBLA week and competed in a business competition. These activities earned members their charter, which makes them members on the state and national levels, also.

Students in grades 7 or 8 is eligible to join. Stu-dents will transition into the high school chapter their freshman year. More information will be available at orientation in Aug. 15.

SH FBLA planning new program Senior High FBLA officers have been meeting over

the summer preparing a Program of Work for the up-coming school year. Members’ other summer activities included playing Bingo with residents at Golden Living Center and touring Vishay.

Box Tops for Education and Godfather’s fedoras on large pizza boxes are still being collected. Donations of box tops and fedoras can be left in the Central Office.

School Picture Day is Aug. 15 Students and staff will get their pictures taken the

first day of school Tues., Aug. 15. Parents do not need to send money that day. Two

proofs with an order form will be sent home with stu-dents a few weeks after pictures are taken. PLEASE READ THE ORDER FORMS CAREFULLY for instructions on how to place a family order, how to order on-line and the toll-free ordering number.

Some things to remember when ordering are not to combine siblings’ orders; each student must have a sep-arate order form envelope and payment; debit cards are not accepted; orders must be received by the due date or there is a $10 late fee; a date for retakes will be an-nounced; and parents living in separate households that want to order separately must have their student(s) tell the photographer that two (2) sets of proofs are needed (use the reminder slip below, if desired).

Lab to be named after ‘64 alumnus Chuck Hagel (‘64) has agreed to help raise funds to

create a STEAM Lab that will bear his name. The new lab will be dubbed the Chuck Hagel

STEAM Lab/Maker Space in honor of the St. Bonaven-ture High School graduate, Vietnam War veteran, busi-nessman, United States Senator (Nebraska, 1997-2009) and the 24th United States Secretary of Defense (2013-2015).

Hagel will speak at an All-School Assembly Fri., Sept. 22, and at a dinner that same evening in the Sco-tus cafeteria. Dinner tickets are $50 each and must be purchased by Thurs., Sept. 14. Corporate tables of eight (8) are also available for $500.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathe-matics, or STEAM, will feature things such as 3-D print-ing, robotics, graphic design, video and audio production, things that foster inquiry and critical and innovative think-ing. When teamed with a Catholic faith-based education, students using the lab will be better prepared to take on leadership roles in all areas of society.

“Academic excellence has long been a trademark of Scotus Central Catholic. The world of education con-tinues to change and technology is the driving force for that change. The creation of a STEAM lab will allow our students to get hands-on experience and create op-portunities for innovation and creativity,” says Jeff Ohnoutka, Scotus President. “Please consider support-ing the creation of this lab and making an investment in our students.”

Contact the Scotus Development Office to purchase dinner tickets soon.

Join Scotus Mothers Club Scotus Mothers’ Co-Presidents Kelly Feehan and

Kris Wurtz invite all mothers of Scotus students to join the Scotus Mothers Club.

In 2016-2017, the group donated Scotus merchan-dise and funds to activities such as Gala and post-prom, and financially supported the reading program; science wing renovations; a reading incentive party; and pur-chased cork tiles for the Guidance Office, non-fiction books and a tuba.

All this was made possible by members giving their time to sell merchandise at home sporting events and sup-port the Craft Boutique.

Scotus merchandise is sold at home athletic events and is available online at the Scotus Shamrock Official Online Store (see the link on the Scotus homepage).

The Scotus Craft Boutique is an annual fundraiser the first Sunday of December at the school. Mothers are contacted in the fall with requests for assistance at and donations to this event. Please say, “Yes!” when you are contacted.

For more information about Scotus Mothers, look under the Development Tab on the Scotus website. Moms are also invited to send a friend request to the Scotus Mothers Club Facebook page.

Shamrock Club Open to Dads Shamrock Club President Jay Pelan invites all fa-

thers of past and present Scotus students to be a part of the Shamrock Club.

Members volunteer to take admissions at all athletic events—junior high, freshman, junior varsity and varsity events alike. The club pays for the Band members’ dis-trict and state competitions and provides funds for coaches and athletes at state contests.

Other club activities that fathers are invited to be a part of are the Shonka Golf outing Aug. 12 at Elks Country Club; the annual men’s stag, Aug. 15, Knights of Columbus Hall; annual wild game feed; football and basketball pools; and sponsoring the Burger Bash at all home football games.

The club meets regularly during the school year the first Wednesday of each month at 7 PM at the Knights of Columbus Hall. At these meetings, coaches talk about events regarding their sport and there are updates on various teams, including coop sports, and drawings for door prizes.

The Shamrock Club annually donates about $10,000 to the Scotus Athletic Department and general fund along with several man-hours of voluntary assistance.

To join, come to the first meeting Wed., Sept. 6, 7 PM, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 3115 6th St.

$3,800+ raised during Big Give Scotus received 53 donations totaling $3,887 dur-

ing the 4th Annual Columbus Big Give May 19. The Big Give is a 24-hour community-wide fundraising event designed to encourage community support and build awareness of programs provided by area nonprofit organizations. Scotus also received $214.80 in Big Give matching funds, bringing the grand total to $4,101.80. After subtracting PayPal fees, Scotus will have $4,029.53 to invest in a new air conditioning system for the school’s computer server room.

SEF 15 Fund Drive Update As of June 5, 2017, the Scotus Education Fund

(SEF) Drive 15 has received 851 pledges for a total of $1,149,762, nearly 89 percent of the campaign’s goal of $1,295,000.

Funds raised are for Tuition Assistance support ($975K over three years); HVAC loan payments ($135K over three years); and paving the new north parking lot ($125K).

Pledges totaling $124,522 have been received spe-cifically for the parking lot, causing a shortfall of $145,238 in funding needed for planned tuition assis-tance now through the 2018-2019 school year.

If you haven't made a pledge yet, you can do so in the Development Office.

Make a Difference, Support Appeal By supporting the Scotus Annual Appeal, donors

help with projects such as adding air conditioning in the Dowd Activity Center. For an estimated $100,000, the Dowd Center and weight room could be added to the HVAC, which in turn will make the school-wide system operate more effectively. If the fundraising goal for this project is exceeded, additional funds will be used for Sco-tus tuition assistance and Dowd Center refurbishing

Aug. 15 is a Holy Day of Obligation

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is Aug. 15. What a wonderful way to start the new school year—a feast day on the first day of school. Families are encouraged to celebrate Mass together, commemorating Mary’s death and assumption into Heaven before her body could begin to decay, a foretaste of our own bodi-ly resurrection at the end of time.
