One highlight of the meeting was our visit from our own Carolyn Nelson. She presented information on “Life

After the Presidency” The photo below shows Carolyn and Gil Nelson with Emily Custer from North Dakota. She

also shared interesting insights into Generational Differences which affect all of our clubs.

Due to the extreme heat, we passed on an outdoor concert at the Lake Harriet Bandshell, enjoying a reception

hosted by Karen Bourne. The next day two salons were held where the 2016 Junior Composer students who

performed the compositions they had written over the previous week. All in all, it was a very inspiring and

interesting two days!

Avivo! is an invigorating and exciting training offered in conjunction

with JCSP. I encourage you to check it out next summer!

Watch for emails in the Spring. Pat Steege and Pat Plude will be

sending out the registration forms.

Junior Composers Summer Programs 2016

by Pat Steege July 29, 2016

Junior Composers summer camps were held July 11-23 at the University of MN Twin Cities. This year’s theme was String

Quartet. The camp themes, which rotate between four offerings in four years, are most easily recognized through the professional readings. Students may write string quartets during the camp, but the professional readings are of pieces written during the spring and submitted before camp. The Artaria String Quartet played pieces for 12 students who had submitted scores, and gave the students a master class experience plus a nice recording. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to hear their pieces come to life at no charge by professionals. Besides the students themselves, the audience included parents and some of the Teacher Training Institute participants who were impressed by what they heard and saw – the music of the future being formed. An additional four quartets were performed by an impromptu group of our own JC people plus one hired violist.

On Saturday, July 23, the Final Salons gave the world 32 new pieces written and performed in one week by our tired but inspired students who had come from all over the United States. 18 of our 32 campers were returning students (56%).

Eric Radloff is back with us again as Songwriters instructor. We have continued a warm relationship with McNally Smith who gives free high-quality recordings of the Songwriters’ songs. A comment from Eric while at the recording studio was, “I enjoy recording music in a recording studio more than I enjoy my birthday.” The Songwriters agreed.

Our enrollment increased this year while at the same time we increased the tuition fee by $100/week. With 32 students enrolled, we have joyfully experienced a financially balanced program. We knew this year was pivotal as to whether this program could sustain itself. As of today, our Board, instructors and staff are entirely on board and optimistic about our future. We have a black bottom line. We are thankful for the dues support from the 7 NCR states and from the NCR itself. The NCR Endowment has been of great financial help also. Our primary source of income has been student tuition. We recognize the need to continually pursue grants to keep us vibrant and compensate our staff more fairly. In the Spring, our second effort at writing a grant proposal was rewarded with a $10,000 grant for 2017. All the old grant reports have been successfully filed and accepted.

Although our camp is well suited to the University of Minnesota, we have revisited other facilities in the Twin Cities, like we did in 2009, to make sure we are still in the best place at the best price. We have looked at McNally Smith in St. Paul and Augsburg College in Minneapolis. We will also preview Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley, MN. A decision about the camp venue will be made in October.

JCSP has made big strides in firming up our organizational structure. We approved Bylaws and put our financial records on QuickBooks with the help of an accountant. Throughout the year we have held telephone conferences and email updates to keep in touch and enhance the continuity of our work. We have been able to obtain an Associate membership in the National Federation of Music Clubs for the purposes of having insurance, and we were awarded 501c3 status under the NFMC umbrella. Our new bank account has been opened under the name Junior Composers Summer Programs.

Many of our former students have advanced to earning music or composition degrees. Many keep in touch with us. Two current JC students have placed as national winners in the Junior Composers

Page 6: August 2016 NCR Days 2016 pg 2 - nfmcncr.org · Counselors were Yue Lor, Ben Davidson, Emily Custer and Moriah Custer. Staff was Sharon Kaplan as office manager, Catherine Besonen

Contest. They are Andrew Cannestra (WI) and Louisa Byron (MN). Jacob Beranek is another national winner with a history of coming to camp. I recently heard that a former student, Graeme Shields, has completed his degree in composition, as have Yue Lor, Ben Davidson and Emily Custer.

We distributed 500 brochures and sent many email solicitations regarding both the composers camp and the Teacher Training Institute. Several email blasts went out to school music departments in the Twin Cities.

Instructors for 2016 were Dr. Seth Custer, Dr. Sarah Miller, Randall Davidson and Eric Radloff. Counselors were Yue Lor, Ben Davidson, Emily Custer and Moriah Custer. Staff was Sharon Kaplan as office manager, Catherine Besonen as Treasurer and Pat Steege as Administrative Director.

Dr. Seth is the Director of the Department of Theory and Composition at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. Dr. Sarah teaches piano and composition at MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis and has had many winning students. Randall Davidson is semi-retired and freelancing as a cellist, composer and social organizer. Eric Radloff, who is a JC alumnus from ten years ago, works in Los Angeles as a singer songwriter.

Something new for 2016? Yes, indeed. Responding to a growing need, we added another level of theory instruction. Yue, Emily and Moriah initiated an entry level theory class that was successful. We gave three students a good start on learning theory through individual attention.

A successful Teacher Training Institute was held July 11-13 at Ferguson Hall. We had 15 enrollees participating in the workshops on Creative Tension and Transformational Learning. We partnered with Avivo teachers Pat Plude and Leo Wanenchak. Avivo gave many scholarships to those who asked for assistance. North Dakota Federation gave three $100 scholarships to ND teachers to attend. This is a worthwhile workshop and we continue to strive for an enrollment of 20-25. This year’s enrollment was the same as last year’s.

We received some generous donations this year, everything from small amounts up to larger gifts, all of which are greatly appreciated. We received a $1000 gift to be used for tickets to the MN Orchestra and general expenses. Odee and Gordie Maier donated an extensive set of mallets and sticks for use on the University’s percussion equipment. The kids and Dr. Seth were really excited about how nicely these items worked out. We now save $100 a year in rental fees for percussion sticks.

Scholarships are plentiful. We received over $7000 to be used for scholarships. Donors included the Federations of Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, ASCAP Foundation, and many private individuals, and the Office of Higher Education in MN. Next year, 2017, our featured theme is “Music+Words”, and the dates are July 11-22, 2017. Guest artists will be recruited and venue secured by January 1st. Looking into 2017 our needs include sustained enrollment and promotion by all Federation clubs and members, a new registrar, a new website and webmaster (Vickie Steenhoek has stepped down), and to increase all stipends. My personal plans are to continue to work as Administrative Director in conjunction with Emily Custer. We will do all tasks together so that no bump in our yearly process is felt. My Farmington house sold last January and I am living with Mark in a small apartment in Lake City, MN, while he works until 2019. And we have purchased a small house in Spearfish, SD, which we inhabit about one week every other month. I would like to stay connected with JCSP in some capacity, perhaps as a grant writer, Board member or whatever. Pat Steege, Administrative Director Junior Composers Summer Programs

Words on Musical Instructions

Although a good working knowledge of musical terms is indispensable to musician and music lover alike, how many could say they really knew them all?

Some of the most interesting musical instructions won’t be found in dictionaries because they are hardly in general use: Satie urging the pianist to play ‘like a nightingale with toothache’; Messiaen asking for a sound ‘like someone sharpening a scythe’.

Of course, knowing the words is just the beginning. The

performer has to realize, for instance, that ‘allegro’ is a style

as much as a speed, and that a Brahms ‘grazioso’ is nothing

like a Mozart one. How often, though, has a performer

wasted hours of practice time trying to get to the heart of

the piece, only to find that, with just one word, which was

there all the time, the music suddenly leaps into life? Ignore

these words at your peril. They unlock the secrets of the

score.

Many thanks to impresarios Andrew Cannestra, Sam Green, Max Friedman for bringing this amazing musical family to our attention.

Did you know that there is an organization called “Musicians without Borders?” This organization is dedicated to using the power of music to bridge divides, connect communities, and heal the wounds of war. Examples of projects are the Mitrovica Rock School in post-war Kosovo where it’s all about the music; Rwanda Youth Music and Tanzania Youth Music introducing music therapy, training and community music activities to empower youth and children affected by poverty, HIV/AIDS, and gender violence. Their website emphasizes that music connects, and we will have our own chance to connect. About a dozen Japanese students will be housed on our floor in Pat’s wing. We can be our own agent for friendship and make these kids feel welcome.

So, what exciting things are happening in this salon to generate those big smiles from Mary Kate, Alison and Kelsey?

Descriptive Words and Phrases to Color Your Compositions

You may have noticed a theme going through this year’s Hemiola, that of descriptive words. Most of you aren’t looking them up, but they are real words and phrases that have been used in music to make the affect clearer to the performer. Accarezzevole – say it like an Italian and it SOUNDS caressing. Today’s words probed the depths of grief: singhiozzando (sobbing), straziante (agonizing), gemendo (moaning, lamenting), piangendo (crying, plaintive).

Andrew Cannestra gets a giant 5 stars for not only looking up the words, but using all 4 word in a sentence: “When I

leave camp, I will be singhiozzando, straziante, gemendo, and piangendo. “

WHAT TO DO BEFORE YOU PRINT

Always allocate at least one (1) hour before you print for proofreading and formatting your music.

Check the following:

1. Make sure you didn’t miss any crucial instructions for the performers – tempo, playing technique, etc.

2. Add rehearsal letters throughout the piece (double bars are a plus). They help the rehearsal run smoothly.

3. Check for any major collisions in the score which make the music difficult to read. This includes text (especially tempo markings), expressions, dynamics and articulation. Make sure to check your PARTS, too.

4. Resize your score to 75% and parts to 85%. This will save paper and create less page turns for the performers.

5. Check the SCORE and PARTS for any poor distribution of measures (ex., only one measure on the last system). Move them around to make your music more legible and save paper.

6. Set your SCORE to DUPLEX (double-sided printing) to save paper. Do not do this for PARTS.

7. Print.

8. Look over your score to make sure it printed all the pages. If it did not, only print the missing pages.

Middlebrook Becomes International Center

Middlebrook was a hive of activity during JCSP. All floors

were filled, mainly with pre-collegiate aged soccer students who came from around the globe to play in

tournaments in Blaine. We identified students from Norway, Japan, Sweden, Brazil, Costa Rica, Haiti,

Uganda, Iceland, France and Canada. Our JCers also

reported contact with people from Narnia, Vulgaria and Mordor, the land of make-believe. Hmmm. Seventh Annual All About Seth! Photo

Musical Instructions

Sam (G or H?) added a definition for mentre si tiene il naso but I didn’t see it till late. “Play the phrase having a

nasal timbre.” Good interpretation for “while holding your nose.”

Con il salto eccessivo: with excessive jumping. (saltarello

– Medieval dance, Italian, fast triple meter, leaping steps)

Kelsey: “with too much salt”

L.O.L. Bach: “with exaggerated taste”

Killian: “with a lot of saltiness”

Alex: “with excessive salt = be salty with the composers

138

meter and 7 sharps”

Zach: “with excessive crying”

Come se seuti su una montagne lontana: as if

sitting on a mountain far away.

Alex: “sedate – a long mountain”

Zach: “at the foot of a lone mountain”
