Joke of the

Month…JUST A DAY

AT THE BEACHSubmitted by Bill Garton

A policeman sees a penguin standing on the sidewalk. He stops a man traveling in a con-vertible and tells him to take the penguin to the zoo.The next day the policeman sees the man and the penguin sitting in the convertible wear-ing sunglasses. The cop says to the man, “I thought I told you to take that penguin to the zoo!”“I did,” said the man. “He had such a good time that today we are going to the beach.”

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

OF JULY Garvin Richards Sr.

For the month of July there was no formal letter to be added to this article. Instead, Garvin Richards Sr. was nomi-nated by his fellow staff members working in the Environmental Department. Robert Thompson, one of Garvin’s Supervisors, started the ball rolling. Robert explained that Garvin is the kind of person who is there in an instant if he is needed. He will stop what he is doing to come to the aid of either a Cypress employee or member. Many others added their comments as well. Everyone had great things to say about Garvin. Garvin truly exemplifies what an Employee of the Month strives to be. CONGRATULATIONS, GARVIN RICHARDS SR. EMPLOYEE FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, 2016.

7 Southeastern SummerTheatre Institute Presents:

PIPPINSunday, August 7

Departing 1:30 p.m.The Seahawk Cultural Center at Hilton Head High School$26.00 per ticket at the door

Pippin is a Tony Award-winning musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson. Bob Fosse, who directed the original Broadway produc-tion, also contributed to the libretto. The musical uses the premise of a mysterious performance troupe, led by a Leading Player, to tell the story of Pippin, a young prince on his search for meaning and significance. The protagonist Pippin and his father Charlemagne are characters derived from two real-life individuals of the early Middle-Ages, though the plot presents no historical accuracy regarding either. The play rather derives from the old Burlesque of Faust. The original run of Pippin is the 33rd longest-running Broadway show. Ben Vereen and Patina Miller won Tony Awards for their portrayals of the Leading Player in the original Broadway production and the revival, respectively, making them the first two actors of different sexes to win a Tony for the same role. Please sign up on My.Cypress or at the Activities Desk.

New Books in the Library for August

Man Called Ove By Fredrik BackmanMeet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict rou-tines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unex-pected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down.”

Killing the Rising Sun: How America Vanquished World War II JapanBy Bill O’Reilly Autumn 1944. World War II is nearly over in Europe but is escalating in the Pacific, where American soldiers face an opponent who will go to any length to avoid defeat. The Japanese army follows the samurai code of Bushido, stipulat-ing that surrender is a form of dishonor. Killing the Rising Sun takes readers to the bloody tropical-island battlefields of Peleliu and Iwo Jima and to the embattled Philippines, where General Douglas MacArthur has made a triumphant return and is plotting a full-scale invasion of Japan.Across the globe in Los Alamos, New Mexico, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team of scientists are preparing to test the deadliest weapon known to mankind. In Washington, DC, FDR dies in office and Harry Truman ascends to the presidency, only to face the most important political deci-sion in history: whether to use that weapon. And in Tokyo, Emperor Hirohito, who is considered a deity by his subjects, refuses to surrender, despite a massive and mounting death toll. Told in the same page-turning style of Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, Killing Patton, and Killing Reagan, this epic saga details the final moments of World War II like never before.

The Library Committee wants to remind you that there is a great collection of classic books in the Living Room. There’s everything from Plutarch to Mark Twain or Robert Louis Stevenson. You’ll find the books in a cabinet on the left wall as you walk into the Living Room. They can be checked out just like any book from the main Library. Just record the book you’re taking in the regular sign-out binder on the Library Desk. Enjoy these special books. The Preston Health Center is in need of Magazines. If you have any that you would like to donate, they would be very appreciative.

CYPRESS DISPLAYPeter Rohr’s Hand-Carved Wooden

Boxes and Bowls

Peter Rohr’s interest in wood-working started back at his high school in Fort Lee, New Jersey, which had a terrific woodshop and teacher. The desk he still uses in his den here at The Cypress was made during those early days. There was some continued woodworking during his career with Exxon, but it really was renewed when he retired to Hilton Head. Peter

purchased a wood turning lathe from a neighbor in Sea Pines along with his turning tools and guidance. The lathe was set up in the garage and over several years turned out lots of bowls of all shapes and sizes. Wood from the U.S., Central and South America were utilized, mainly Walnut, Cherry, Cedar, Mahogany, Poplar, Purpleheart, and Teak. These bowls are from the collection at his home in The Cypress and some have been put to use. In anticipation of moving to The Cypress, Peter shipped his lathe and all the cutting tools to his son in Pennsylvania. When he moved to The Cypress in 2008, he soon renewed his woodworking interest by purchasing a “Dovetail Jig” and starting creating small decorative wooden boxes with corner Dovetail or Corner joints. Some boxes are made of exotic woods such as Black or White Ebony, Zebrawood, Brazilian Cherry, Cocobolo, in addition to the U.S. sources such as Cedar, Basswood and Oak. The local lumber yards have available some of the U.S. wood supplies, but for overseas wood sources one uses various suppliers through catalogues or the internet. For special occasions, Peter gives some boxes to family members, but many or most fill the shelves in his den. Peter welcomes all to stop by at his casual garage/shop to see “works in progress.” Not much room for tools and wood supplies, but small wooden boxes are the answer for now. Be sure to stop by the Display Case in The Cypress Clubhouse Lobby to view this very creative exhibit.

Jerry Darnell’s Alice in Wonderland Needlepoint Pillows

This month Jerry Darnell will be displaying his handmade needlepoint pillows. They depict the illustrations from the original book “Alice in Wonderland.” It was illustrated by Sir John Ten-niel, and his original drawings are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Recently the Museum

worked with Ehrman Tapestry to create needlepoint designs of four main characters from the story of the Prince of Hearts stealing the tarts. The four designs are the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, Alice, and the White Rabbit.

28 Sun City Summer Theater Presents:

My Old LadySunday, August 28

Departing at 1:15 p.m. $14.00 per ticket

Sun City’s Summer Theater presents the award win-ning play, My Old Lady, directed by renowned New York director, Esther Rosen. When a down-on-his-luck middle aged man inherits an apartment in Paris, he plans to solve his financial woes by selling it. He arrives on the doorstep and discovers, to his dismay, that the elderly woman living there has lifetime habitation rights under an arcane French law and she is not about to give them up. Because he has no other place to go, she invites him to stay in the spacious apartment. A spiral of friendship, romance with the old lady’s outspoken daughter, and some uncomfortable revelations about his unmourned father affect all in this poignant play with strong roles for all three actors. Please sign up on My.Cypress or at the Activities Desk.

29 Sue Britt's Afternoon Bible Study

Monday, August 291:00 p.m.

The Game RoomSue Britt’s Monday Afternoon Bible Study will begin again on Monday, August 29th, in the Game Room of the Cypress Clubhouse. As usual, we will begin at 1:00 with a drink and a cookie and be ready to open our study at 1:15 p.m. The class will begin by greet-ing each other and any new ladies, and then move to a short review of some of Luke’s major themes in his Gospel. Sue will have a schedule for the fall to hand out and we will move ahead with The Triumphal Entry of Jesus Into Jerusalem during your next session on Sept. 12th. The Labor Day Holiday on the 5th will give her a chance to get everything together and ready! If you have not attended before, please feel very welcome to join us for the Fall. Each of the sessions stands alone and their aim is to have an open and free discussion where everyone’s questions can be considered, and everyone’s participation is encouraged, both those who have lots of Biblical knowledge and those who have none! If you would like to join the class, please come and bring your own Bible. If you don’t have one, please call Sue and she will provide one for you. They use a small guide by N.T. Wright to guide their discussions. As the class will be doing only the last six lessons in the Fall, Sue will provide anyone new with a copy of the lessons. Remember - no Biblical knowledge is necessary to be a part of our group! If you are interested, please call Sue Britt, 843-681-7553 any time after August 7th.
