In the past year alone, I’ve seen distinct changes in the way people want to travel. More meaningful experiences shared with those important in their lives. Planned multi-generational adventures that create indelible memories. More hands-on immersion in a location’s present culture and not just attentiveness to its history. When I invited Che Bella followers to connect with us so we could help customize itineraries that revolved completely around their personal needs and passions, we never expected such an overwhelming response. A major theme running through the requests for customer itineraries was the desire to take family time to a whole new level. A family reunion. A sisters’ getaway. A graduation trip. A milestone birthday. This year has already been filled with such trips and many more are in the pipeline. WORLDVIEWBrexit and Traveling to Britian and Europe

British politics and global financial markets are being shaken up from Britainrsquos historic vote to leave the

European Union The European Union was created as a United States of Europe in the aftermath of World

War II European leaders wanted to prevent a repeat of the two world wars by giving European powers mdash

especially France and West Germany mdash shared economic and political institutions

Fast forward to 2016

I returned from a wonderful tour of London and the Cotswolds two days before the vote and was very

interested in my conversations with the locals Britain leaving the EU is the most momentous decision

since Henry VIII broke from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century to marry Anne Boleyn The

issues economic regulation political sovereignty and the emotionally charged issue of

immigration Scotland and Ireland are members of the United Kingdom but voted overwhelmingly to stay

in the EU The leaders of these countries have both spoken out insisting that they will push for further

referendums specific to their own countries about whether or not to separate from the United

Kingdom and remain in the EU

Most Europeans today feel a greater loyalty toward their home countries than they do to the European

Union as a whole This lack of solidarity has led many EU citizens to be resentful of the degree of control

the EU wields over their lives While the EU may have been a good idea at the time cultural differences

and todays worldview are certainly causing all EU countries to closely re-examine their policies and

borders

So what does this mean for Americans traveling abroad

The UK was part of the EU but never Schengen so you will continue to have to present your passport

coming and going in to the UK Schengen is the group of 26 European nations that abolished internal

borders allowing unrestricted travel between countries Obviously you will need your passport to enter the

EU but once yoursquore there countries that are members of the Schengen Area will still not ask to see your

passport if yoursquore crossing from one Schengen country to another However countries are able to

reintroduce border controls if they feel that any situation warrants it The most recent change in border

policy came after the Paris terror attacks Lines at immigration will be longer as security measures

increase With more security and longer lines make sure to build plenty of connection times between

flights no less than 2 hours to make your connection Some flights appear to be bargains but have

connection times that are risky especially in large airports or those you donrsquot know

The most immediate effect is in the exchange rates between the dollar and both the British pound and the

euro Itrsquos a really affordable time for Americans to visit the UK and Europe Mike Serio CFA Regional

Chief Investment Officer at Wells Fargo says

Our forecasts are for continued dollar strength going forward With continued anemic growth in Europe

and the side effects of Brexit dont look for much strength in either the euro or sterling for the foreseeable

future However as currency fluctuations work against some they are positive for others One obvious

winner is the US consumer looking to take that long-awaited European vacation Deals abound so with

low interest rates near full employment and a strong dollar there has rarely been a better time to be a

world traveler than there is today

The British tourism industry is eager to work with American travel companies Trans-Atlantic flights are

priced 15-20 lower than usual and its a good time to take advantage of great deals at hotels and

restaurants Stay tuned In the next few months Che Bella Tours will be offering itineraries in London

Scotland and Ireland

Ill end with a quote from the benevolent travel professional Rick Steves I donrsquot want to be glib or naive

about the challenges that face the UK and the EU in the coming months Itrsquos going to be a long and

difficult process But as I head for the airport Irsquove chosen to look on the bright side of life For American

travelers Europe just got even more interesting Keep on traveling

TRAVEL TIPS AND TRICKSSay ldquoYesrdquo to Roseacute Wines

Roseacute Itrsquos the perfect barbecue wine the perfect beach wine and the perfect picnic wine No we are not

talking about sweet California white zinfandel but rather the dry roseacutes that are refreshing to drink but also

have the structure and length to stand up to flavorful cuisine Roseacute has the juicy red fruit aromas that we

appreciate in red wine with the cool and refreshing qualities of a white

Red grapes have white insides and produce clear juice The color in red wine actually comes from the

skins Roseacute is made by shortening a key step in the making of red wine - the grape skin contact

stage To make most roseacute wine red grapes are lightly crushed and left to macerate with their red skins for

a while (typically 1-3 days) The juice is then strained out from the solid stuff (called ldquomustrdquo) and fermented

in the tanks The longer the skins are left in the wine the darker the color of the finished roseacute As a result

a great roseacute has the body of a red wine but its served chilled and is extremely refreshing Itrsquos a perfect

blend of yumminess low in sugar and alcohol and great with summer food

Recommendations

My friends in Spain have introduced me to a few favorite roseacutes which I serve to my guests on tour Muga

Rosado Rioja and La Rosa de Raventos i Blanc When Im in Majorca with my friend Ruth we go down

the street to the local bodega and load up on bottles of Can Vidalet blush

At home in St Thomas a day at Dinghys Beach Bar on Water Island is always special with our favorite

French roseacute Whispering Angel Itrsquos crisp and refreshing with flavors of grapefruit and citrus

Provence winemakers are known for their bone-dry roseacutes with bright acidity that match well to the local

cuisine including abundant vegetables seafood olive oil and herbs de Provence On our Joie de Vivre

tours in France we stop and taste the roseacute when we picnic like the French or tour the vineyards

This summer I also had the pleasure of touring the wineries of the North Fork Valley known as ldquoThe

American Provencerdquo on the Western Slope of Colorado Nestled in this valley are 8 wineries ready to

introduce you to Colorado wine At the Leroux Creek Vineyards French-born chef Yvon Gros and his

wife Joanna are working hard to develop a new audience to try their delicious and elegant roseacutes Their

Leroux Creek Inn is a lovely bed and breakfast with 5 guestrooms that overlook the vineyard From artisan

cheeses hand made breads and fresh local produce to artfully prepared meals in a relaxed and fun

environment itrsquos a little taste of Provence in Colorado

Make It with LoveLe Pique Nique The art of the

French Picnic

When the weather is good the French people picnic - on the banks of rivers in the mountain meadows at

the city parks and even along the highways - because when itrsquos lunchtime itrsquos time to stop and enjoy

They open their portable table spread out a blanket or just sit on a bench The table is set the chairs

arranged real cutlery and wine glasses appear and everyone settles down to enjoy an ample and

civilized meal

For the French a picnic isnrsquot just lunch it is a time to engage in conversation and enjoy good food Like

any other meal a French picnic is meant to be savored in a beautiful setting hellip and maybe followed by a

nap in the shade of a tree

Whether itrsquos on the Left Bank of Paris enjoying the bustling Luxembourg Gardens on the steps of

Avignons Palace du Papes or in the peaceful countryside of Provence Che Bella embraces the art of the

French picnic while on tour Here are some of my favorite French picnic recipes for you to download

and print

This summer I also had the pleasure of touring the wineries of the North Fork Valley known as ldquoThe

American Provencerdquo on the Western Slope of Colorado Nestled in this valley are 8 wineries ready to

introduce you to Colorado wine At the Leroux Creek Vineyards French-born chef Yvon Gros and his

French picnic while on tour Here are some of my favorite French picnic recipes for you to download

and print

about the challenges that face the UK and the EU in the coming months Itrsquos going to be a long and

travelers Europe just got even more interesting Keep on traveling
