“Get the big things right”. This is one of my goals at home and work. This is the
theme of my introductory lecture in ANSC 498 every semester and for our
graduate student orientation session this week. With all of the distractions
swirling around and the complexities of life, sometimes we lose sight of the
most important things at home and the workplace. Loyalty, dedication, effort,
commitment, compassion, appreciation, kindness. Check out the News-Gazette
article on pg 5 of this month’s “Tails”. Dr. Bahr is a great example of a
professor and mentor that gets the big things right. I was a Boy Scout once upon
a time, and I’m fond of saying that the Boy Scouts get it right with the 12 points
of the Scout Law and the Boy Scout motto. Google it if you are curious. ;-)
Students return to campus this week, and classes resume next Monday. So many
important things to “get right” for all of us. Our faculty strive to provide quality
learning experiences about the science of animals; our graduate students are
dedicated to discovery research and in depth learning; our undergraduates have
their plates full with classes, study time, extra-curricular activities and work
schedules; and our staff are committed to being the backbone that facilitates our
success. The increased energy level on campus is palpable. It reminds me of the
importance of the mission we all have as part of this pre-eminent Land Grant
University. Here’s hoping for a rewarding and successful Fall semester. Let’s get
the big things right!
