This Month’s Highlights

Big Blue LiveMonday, August 31 at 8pm

Scientists, animal behaviorists, and other experts come together in a live broadcast to document the extraordinary rejuvenation of the once endangered and now thriving ecosystem of Monterey Bay, California. Some of the world’s most charismatic marine creatures convene in a once-a-year confluence of fins, fur, and fangs.

JFK & LBJ: A Time For GreatnessTuesday, August 4 at 9pm

President Lyndon Johnson is chiefly remembered for the Vietnam War. But he also engineered two of the most important laws Congress ever passed: the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. This special examines how Johnson transformed America, and how he worked behind the scenes to ensure President Kennedy’s legacy.

The Mystery of MatterWednesday, August 19 at 8pm

This three-episode series dramatizes great adventures in the history of science, including the discovery of oxygen by one of science’s great odd couples; Dmitri Mendeleev’s invention of the Periodic Table; Marie Curie’s discovery of radioactivity; and Glenn Seaborg’s creation of a new element—plutonium—that changed the world forever.

National GalleryFriday, August 21 at 9pm

Go behind the scenes of one of the world’s great museums, inhabited by 2,400 paintings from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Directed by famed documentarian Frederick Wiseman, the film is a portrait of a place, and of the scholars, scientists, and curators who study, restore, and plan the exhibitions.

The Moth Radio HourSundays at 2pm

WFIU’s newest addition is a program dedicated to the art and craft of story-telling. It’s a celebration of both the raconteur, who breathes fire into true tales of ordinary life, and the story-telling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. At the center of each performance is the story—each one true and told live and without notes.

Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of stories to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. Each show starts with a theme that the storytellers explore, often in unexpected ways.

Moth stories dissolve socio-economic barriers, expose vulnerabilities, and quietly suggest ways to overcome challenges and see with new eyes.

San Francisco OperaSaturdays at 1pm starting August 29

WFIU begins a new season of broadcasts from one of North America’s top opera companies, the San Francisco Opera.

Since its inception in 1923, the San Francisco Opera has embodied a spirit of innovation by presenting the world premieres of many works including A Streetcar Named Desire, Dead Man Walking, and Doctor Atomic.

The radio season begins on August 29 with Verdi’s heart-wrenching tragedy Rigoletto starring Željko Lucic as Rigoletto, Aleksandra Kurzak as Gilda, and Francesco Demuro as the Duke of Mantua.

The San Francisco Opera has presented the American debut performances of numerous artists, including Anna Netrebko, Tito Gobbi, Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Renata Tebaldi, Valery Gergiev, Sir Georg Solti, and Francis Ford Coppola.

What does it mean to become a SUSTAINING MEMBER of WTIU?By definition, to sustain means to nourish and strengthen; our sustaining members do just that – they strengthen and nourish the programs you count on!

There are many ways to support your favorite programs, but the easiest way is to become a sustaining member. Here’s how it works: You choose a dollar amount that best fits your monthly budget ($5 a month, $10 a month, $25 a month or more). Then set up your bank account or credit/debit card to make an automatic contribution each month in support of this station. Becoming a sustaining member is easier on your budget than a one-time annual gift because it spreads your support throughout the year. Plus, your membership will always be current – so you’ll never need to worry about renewing your support.

Best of all, you’ll be providing a steady stream of support to WTIU, ensuring that programs like Nature, the PBS NewsHour, and Masterpiece continue to have a home on your screen. Every time you tune in, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you’re doing your part to keep your PBS station strong.

It takes just a couple minutes to become a sustaining member. Please give us a call at 800-662-3311 or visit our website at wtiu.org. With your qualifying contribution, you’re still eligible for the money-saving MemberCard and a thank you gift each year, and all tax benefits still apply. If you’d like, you can also receive the WTIU Viewing Guide by mail or email each month. You are in complete control of your sustaining gift and can increase or decrease it at any time. Your sustaining membership is also environmentally and fiscally responsible as we won’t be sending you renewal mail, thus saving on paper, printing and postage.

Please consider joining our growing circle of SUSTAINING MEMBERS today
