ducational television was founded on the principle that at least one media

channel should focus on programs that would inspire and educate.Today,

more than 86% of all U.S. television households watch PBS over the

course of a year – making PBS the fifth most watched TV or cable chan-

nel in the US and the channel ranked number one for educational content.

As we prepare for the beginning of school this month, I hope you realize that because

of your donations young families can rely on PBS KIDS programs like Sesame Street,

Arthur and Daniel Tiger to provide high quality educational content that teaches basic

skills needed for success in school.

As technology has evolved, our trusted children’s broadcast content has leapt to

computers, tablets, smartphones, game devices and other platforms. This allows Vegas

PBS to reach young learners wherever they are, anytime, anywhere, including the

classroom. We also know it works. When our digital content is embedded into school

curriculum, 56% of students showed an increase in critical thinking practices from

pre- to post-test and outperformed state and national assessment norms by more than

10 points.

Gone are the days of film strips and

microfilm in classrooms.Through our educa-

tional media, it’s easier than ever for teach-

ers and parents to use technology to help

educate our students. Parents and teachers

can sign up for Vegas PBS LearningMedia

and receive free access to thousands of

resources to create personalized learning

experiences for their students. The classroom content includes snippets from Ken

Burns’ documentaries and NOVA episodes you sponsor, plus custom material designed

for specific lessons. Using a suite of new productivity tools, teachers have access to

video, audio, documents, interactives, images and in-depth lesson plans, all indexed and

searchable by standards, grade level, and subject area.

Vegas PBS LearningMedia launched its pilot program in August 2013 with approx-

imately 8,000 registered users and 17,000 digital resources. Just two years later, we

have more than 50,000 registered students, parents and educators and provide more

than 100,000 standards-aligned resources.

Member support allows us to provide on-air television that lives up to those found-

ing principles of education and enlightenment. We are able to leverage that support

into additional corporate and grant funds that provide services like Vegas PBS

LearningMedia that build on the strength of public media to improve teacher effective-

ness and student achievement, to benefit the Southern Nevada community. Vegas PBS

is part of the “New Nevada” offering accessible, accountable, and engaging tools to

improve student performance.

…it’s easier thanever for teachers andparents to use tech-nology to help educateour students.”

How did they transform a pre-sumed paradise into a treeless wasteland, bringing ruin upon their island and them-selves? Explore controversial recent claimsthat challenge decades of previous thinkingabout the islanders who have been accusedof everything from ecocide to cannibalism.Among the radical new theories is that theislanders used ropes to “walk” the statuesupright, like moving a fridge. Now youcan go behind the scenes of this Londoninstitution filled with masterpieces ofWestern art dating back to the Middle Ages.Frederick Wiseman's film is a portrait of aplace – its operations, relations with theworld, its staff and public, and, of course, thegallery’s paintings. In a perpetual and dizzy-ing game of mirrors, film watches paintingwatches film.

s another school year begins, we wanted to share how Vegas PBS is making a

difference in the education of children and families. Generations of families

have grown up and learned many lessons provided by beloved PBS children’s

programs such as Sesame Street and Arthur.

Continuing the learning adventures our on-air programs provide, the Vegas PBS Ready To

Learn project provides literacy and health-based workshops to schools and families. The

workshops are made possible by generous sup-

port from grants, individuals and private

sources. We are happy to share that last year

Vegas PBS provided more than 70,000 new

books and more than 1,200 workshops to at-

risk families, serving tens of thousands of chil-

dren. In addition to books and television pro-

grams, Vegas PBS provides numerous websites,

games and educational applications providing

extensive trusted and widely used educational

resources for children and parents. Vegas PBS

provided more than a workshop a day, promoting

good health and literacy.

Vegas PBS is also known as an innovator in

using educational technology to provide real

solutions to educational challenges. Our video on demand service that provides video seg-

ments along with other instructional resources, such as charts, maps and quizzes, continues

to grow and is now an integral part of instruction throughout the schools. We are proud to

report that more than four million instructional resources were either downloaded or streamed

by local teachers and students since this service was launched.

Recognizing the importance of serving all students, the Vegas PBS Described and Captioned

Media Center provides extensive educational materials to deaf, hard of hearing, blind and

visually-impaired students of all ages and their families.

Workshops, professional development and cutting-edge technologies are all part of the

educational services Vegas PBS provides. While all of this might seem surprising for a PBS

station, we are proud to offer these services that help educate and engage current and new

generations.

Omaha Beach:Honor and SacrificeThursday, August 6 at 10 p.m.

On June 6, 1944, a lengthy stretch of beach in

Normandy, France posed the biggest obstacle

for the success of the Allies’ Operation Overlord. The assignment was to

take Omaha Beach, establish a beachhead and move inland into France. In

this moving special, several veterans return to Omaha Beach for the 70th

anniversary of D-Day and tell their stories. Their acts of courage and the

sacrifices of their comrades on that fateful day are remembered and lauded.

JFK and LBJ: A Time for GreatnessTuesday, August 4 at 9 p.m.

At first glance, Lyndon Johnson was a Texan who exhibited the bigotry and

hatred voiced by his fellow southern senators. But his actions in the White

House told a different story when he dared to champion two laws that

changed America and the world – the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting

Rights Act of 1965. Now, a new film sheds light on the fascinating story of

a president who knew how to harness the nation’s revulsion at JFK’s brutal

assassination, twist arms and get his way. Personal testimony, rarely seen

footage and never-before-heard secret White House recordings are featured

in this special.

views from lyricist Sammy Cahn, singer/television personality Dinah Shore,

film critic Leonard Maltin, and music critic John Rockwell are interspersed

throughout the special. Performance clips include “It Was A Very Good Year,”

The Men Who Made Us FatThursdays, August 20-September 3 at 10 p.m.

Around the world, obesity levels are rising.

More people are now overweight than under-

nourished. Journalist Jacques Peretti explores

the ways eating habits have vastly changed

over the last 40 years. He digs into the story of

a sweetener, championed in the 1970s, that is

now known to interfere with the hormone that controls appetite. He reveals

the history of "supersizing," a concept that boosted both food consumption

and profits. Examining assumptions about what is and is not healthy, Peretti

also scrutinizes developments in dietary advice and the power of marketing

and advertising on the food choices we make.

Navy SEALs: Their Untold StoryTuesday, August 18 at 8 p.m.

Despite the widespread attention paid to the Navy SEALs (Sea, Air and

Land teams) whose clandestine mission resulted in the death of Osama

bin Laden, few know their story. This program shows how these warriors

evolved in response to changing threats and how their extraordinary abil-

ities shaped U.S. and world history. Some of their previously unheralded

feats are highlighted.

Eisenhower's Secret WarSunday, August 2 from 10 p.m. - Midnight

Dwight D. Eisenhower displayed an unwavering commitment – both public and covert

– to peaceful co-existence with the Soviet Union in the tumultuous Cold War years.

Based on recent research by established scholars and writers, the documentary series

provides a new understanding of Eisenhower’s path to the presidency from the time

of the successful D-Day landings to an election promise of finding a way to end the

Korean War. As president, his national security policies and tactics kept a divided

world at peace during the 1950s while establishing a clear superiority for the U.S. in

the nuclear arms race. Accounts of more than 20 key American, British and Soviet

witnesses to the major events are also featured.

Kahiel Easy, son of Tasty Island JamaicanRestaurant Manager, Shernette Mitchell

I couldn’t say no to the opportunityto support my local PBS station – Vegas PBS.My daughter grew up on PBS in California, sotuning in to Arthur was a regular thing in ourhome. We’re proud to offer Jamaican cuisineand, since we’ve been in the Las Vegas Valleysharing that cuisine and culture, we still enjoyour Britcoms and documentaries.
