Police are alerting residents to a significant rise in the theft ofcaravans across South Cambridgeshire villages. In the early hours of 24 June, a caravan was stolen from astorage site in Cambridge Road, Newton. At about 3am unknown people entered the farm via a rearfield, lifting one fence out of the ground and smashing a secondone. Thankfully the caravan had a tracker installed which wasactivated and alerted the tracker company. The caravan waslater recovered in Bournbridge. Between about midday on 26 June and 6.30pm on Sunday28 June another caravan was stolen from a storage site inHunts Road, Duxford. Intruders cut a hole in a high hedge surrounding the site, partially filled a ditch with soil and placed boards to bridge thegap to allow them to remove the caravan.

At about 1pm on 29 June a third caravan was stolen from acaravan site in Church Street, Steeple Morden. The caravanwas unhooked from its power source and stolen using awhite flatbed truck. Between 6pm on 14 May and 7am on 15 May a caravanpark in Earith Road, Willingham, was broken into. The fencewas broken down and a fence post removed to gain entry, along with power cables being cut. A Sterling twin-wheel Eccles touring caravan and an AcerFirestart caravan with a blue and grey striped design werestolen from the tourist park. Crime Reduction Officer for South Cambridgeshire, RachelCarr, said: "This is an unusually high number of caravanthefts in a short space of time and we are asking members ofthe public to be vigilant. "There are a number of simple measures caravan ownerscan take to reduce the risk of theft such as installing atracking device and a caravan alarm. In addition, hitch locks, plus wheel and axle locking devices, can deter opportunistattacks.”

Hayfever Top TipsHayfever is caused by an allergy topollen which can occur from earlySpring through to Autumn.Tips to reduce hayfever symptoms:• Try to avoid large grassy areas orcutting grass.• Keep indoors as much as possible withwindows and doors shut.• Sunglasses that wrap around may helpstop pollen getting to the eyes.• Keep car windows shut (pollen filterscan be added to car air vents).• Don't dry bed linen outside on days ofhigh pollen count.• Putting vaseline under your nose willtrap pollen.• Wash hair at night and shower ifyou've been in the countryside.• Next year, start your antihistaminesone month before the hayfever season.MedicationsIt is usually not necessary to see a GPfor hayfever as a pharmacist will be ableto suggest a combination ofmedications. These will be an equalstrength to most of those available fromthe GP and cheaper to buy at apharmacy than pay for a prescription.Antihistamine tablets, nasal spray andeye drops can all be used together andare likely to work better together ratherthan just one of these on its own.For more information see: allergyuk.orgCatherine Price RNCambourne Parish Nursing [email protected]

What lovely weather we have seen across Cambridgeshire – and long may itcontinue! Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service hopes you have all beenstaying fire safe with your latest outdoor activities, but just in case, here are ourfirefighters’ top tips: When out camping or using a tent, never use candles inside or nearby andalways discourage smoking nearby. Never cook inside a tent either. If cooking outdoors, keep barbeques on level ground, never pour accelerant onit and use it well away from fences, sheds and foliage. If you have a bonfire, build it well away from buildings, tents or other flammableobjects and make sure it is properly out when you leave. When out in the countryside, extinguish cigarettes properly and dispose ofthem responsibly – never throw a lit cigarette into a field or wooded area.* Don’t forget, if you’re a landlord of a property, then you can pick up free smokealarms at our distribution events ahead of proposed regulation changes. Solar PhotovoltaicPanels GroupDiscount SchemeBack in 2011 a group from Coton gottogether to form a solar PV panel bulkpurchase scheme. The resultingeCoton scheme allowed 75 residentsfrom South Cambs to install solarpanels at a reduced price. Now, in2015, a group of volunteers from theSustainable Parish EnergyPartnership1 are organising a secondscheme, ‘eCoton Solar Savers’, opento all property owners in South Cambs. Prices of PV panels have come downsignificantly since the first eCotonscheme. In fact, they are now aroundhalf the price that they were in 2011! The largest domestic system isaround £6,000, although eCoton SolarSavers (2015) hope to negotiate alower price. Financial returns are partlythrough savings on electricity bills andpartly through the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT),the government payment scheme tohomeowners. This has been reduced

since 2011 but the ‘payback period’ isstill about 7 years, and panels can beexpected to last for 20–25 years. If you would like to register interest inthis scheme, send an email [email protected] When prices are arranged, you willreceive details and then be invited toattend an information meeting onWednesday 23 September inHaslingfield, where you can meet theSPEP volunteers running the schemeand the solar panel installationcompany. Following this, the installers willarrange for an assessor to visit yourproperty to establish its suitability forsolar panels. Should your property be suitable forsolar panels, then it is only at thispoint that you would need to decide ifyou want to proceed. All contracts andpayments will be made between youand the installer – the role of SPEPvolunteers is to set a price with theinstaller and set up the scheme. eCoton Solar Savers is open toanyone with a property in the SouthCambridgeshire area, so if you areinterested in reducing your carbonfootprint and making a soundinvestment then register and savewith solar!Visit www.scambs.gov.uk/content/sustainable-parish-energy-partnershipfor more information.

In addition Heidi was recently electedto serve on the House of Commons’Work and Pensions Select Committeewhich will enable her to scrutinise andinfluence areas such as welfare, employment and pensions. Heidi said: “Iwant to use my position to ensure oursocial safety net is there to supportthe people who need it and thatgovernment policy does notinadvertently allow the vulnerable to fallthrough the cracks. I'm acutely awarethat there are real people, notstatistics behind every policy decision.” On the Chancellor’s Summer Budget,Heidi said, “As a new back bencher, Iwas in the dark as to what would be inthe budget. So I was absolutelydelighted by the unexpected features[continued freeze on fuel duty, introduction of a new National LivingWage and increases in the PersonalTax Allowance thresholds] which in myopinion will continue helping people onlow incomes.”[email protected]: ( 01954) 21270

The Cubs summer outing saw usreturn to Grafham Water. We joined together with the Scoutsto spend an action packed day there. The boys were able to take part in arange of activities; Paddle Boarding,Raft Building and Crate Stacking. We have also spent time at camp. This time we went to Phasels Woodnear Hemel Hempstead. This is whatsome of the Cubs had to say about it:-Oliver - “I liked everything! It was greatwhen we went kayaking and I did theCresta Run. The cooking on the firewas epic, we made bananas withchocolate buttons in them, and appleswith raisins and muscavado sugar andthen cooked them on the campfiresthat we had made!”Eddie - “I enjoyed the kayakingbecause it was fun, most of the peoplegot wet. I liked sleeping in the tent andI liked the egg and bacon we had atbreakfast. I would like to go Cub campagain, I think we will get to make abigger fire, and go on camp everyweek.”Jack - “Last weekend we went to CubsCamp at Phasels Wood. We slept intents. First we did some rifle shootingand I got a 9 which is near the centre.Next we got to go into the woods. Weplayed a game where some cubs hadto build a den and guard it and myteam scored points if we could remove

a log from their den. In the evening,we had hot dogs and cookedmarshmallows in the fire, which werelovely. It was great fun doing theCresta Run. We sat in carts at the topof a hill and then rode really fast downit to the bottom. At the bottom therewere some tyres which we crashedinto. After that we walked into townand went to a river where we did somekayaking. At the end, we got ourkayaks into a long line and James andI had to walk across the canoes andswitch boats. I fell in (it was REALLYcold!). After lunch, our parents cameto collect us and take us home. I reallyenjoyed Cub Camp and hope we cango again soon!”

27 September to 8 November 2015The Uncanny ValleyWysing Arts CentreA group exhibition exploring the phenomenon of “theuncanny valley” through computer generated imagery, computer game design, video, photography and kineticsculpture. The Uncanny Valley is a phrase that was coined byrobotics professor Masahiro Mori as a way to describe anemotional response that can be measured whenencountering objects that are hyper-real; where there is amoment of intellectual uncertainty about what is beingviewed that gives way to a feeling of discomfort ordisorientation. More recently the term has been applied tocomputer game design and CGI in the film industry. This group exhibition aims to explore the phenomenon, alongside contributing to the discourse around screen basedand digital works, by exploring the aesthetics of the uncannythrough computer generated imagery, computer gamedesign, video, photography and kinetic sculpture. The majority of the artists selected for the exhibition havean already existing relationship to Wysing through havingparticipated in residencies, retreats, exhibitions and theannual festival of experimental music.

This month we celebrate the feast of the Assumption of theBlessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption of Mary, Mother of theLord, into heaven is a consoling sign of our hope. In looking toher, carried up amid the rejoicing of angels, human life isopened to the perspective of eternal happiness. Our owndeath is not the end but rather the entrance into life that knowsno death. Mary’s faith enabled her to recognize the work ofGod in her people’s history and in her own life. Her opennessto God allowed God to work through her so that salvationmight come to all. As Pope Benedict XVI said: "Bycontemplating Mary in heavenly glory, we understand that theearth is not the definitive homeland for us either… We will oneday share in this same glory. We may be sure of it: from onhigh, Mary follows our footsteps with gentle concern, dispelsthe gloom in moments of darkness and distress, reassures uswith her motherly hand. Supported by awareness of this, letus continue confidently in our path of Christian commitmentwherever Providence may lead us. Let us forge ahead in ourlives under Mary’s guidance." May we be like Mary, open andcooperative in God’s plan of salvation and continue servingGod through our community.

Dear Friends,Our church anniversary picnic went wellwith many folks gathered and we wereable to reflect on God's blessings overthe past year. New people, newopportunities to minister and a new yearin which to grow. But growth must bedone in the right way to be effective. We have studied about truth recently inGalatians and Hebrews and itsimportance in life. We do not find truth inwhat comes out of Hollywood or in videogames. It is dubious if we find real truth inwhat comes from many politicians. We cannot seek real truth from thewritings or surmisings of men for all thesons of Adam have that sin nature within,

regardless of their job title or position.Certainly in Christianity if you want truthyou need to go to the Bible. Not anyextra books or feelings or visions orimages you see on a piece of toast. For Christianity you ask is it in theBook? If not then if it is to do withdoctrine it is suspect. I tell my people if someone comes toyou and says Christians need to changethe teaching to this new thing orviewpoint. Ask that person to show youfrom the Bible where that new thing islocated. If it is not there then the newthing needs to be rejected. Paul said inGalatians 1:9 As we said before, so sayI now again, If any man preach anyother gospel unto you than that ye havereceived, let him be accursed.

We are not to try to alter God and hismessage to accommodate man-madephilosophy or social opinion or evenidolatrous tradition, but rather allowGod and his message to change us forthe better. We will be gearing up for some moreliterature distribution as there are lot ofhomes that simply did not exist lasttime we went through and some folkshave moved in as we live in a verytransitional area. Though thissometimes makes for sad farewells ascareers and circumstances movepeople away it also gives place formore folks to be ministered who comeupon our happy dwelling ofCambourne.Pastor Donavan Bangs

Everyone is beginning to look forward tothe challenges that September brings, but as we approach the end of term it isa perfect opportunity to reflect on all ourmemories and achievements of theyear. Winning the Cambridge NewsPrimary School of the Year was ahighlight which we celebrated togetherwith the school community. As we entered into our final half termat Monkfield Park as Year 6, we knewthat exciting adventures lay ahead. Throughout our week at PGL weaccomplished many exciting activitiessuch as climbing, scaling the dizzyheights of the high ropes, and thechallenge of building a buoyant raft(some being more buoyant than others). The week was full of acts of courage, team work and determination and wasrounded off by singing songs around thecampfire and, of course, enjoyingtoasted marshmallows. Once we returned, rehearsals for ourSummer production began in full swing. We look forward to treating ouraudiences to a musical adventurethrough a wonderland, where Aliceencounters a range of unusual

characters and scenarios ranging fromthe cast of The Wizard of Oz toexploring the Bake Off tent! With the temperatures rising and thesummer evidently with us, the schooltook the opportunities the outdoorsoffered. The whole school enjoyedexploring maths outdoors from algebraicequations using flowers, leaves andtwigs, to calculating the age of our trees. Sports day was another opportunity toshow teamwork when competing in ourschool houses to complete individualand team races. Competition was closeduring both KS1 and KS2 Sports Days

but the champions this year wereEnterprise on both days! Many of us have ventured furtherafield to explore what other places haveto offer. Reception children enjoyedclose encounters with wildlife whenvisiting Shepreth Wildlife Park to endtheir topic about minibeasts in style.Meanwhile, Year 5 took a time travellingjourney to the Tudor era at Kentwell Halland donned Tudor outfits and took partin typical daily activities. Although sad toleave 1588 they were relieved to find a21st century coach to take them home. During Culture and Diversity week, theschool was buzzing with activities thathelped the children to learn andunderstand that diversity makes ourschool and our world so interesting.Children enjoyed visitors and activitiesfrom different cultures such as Indiandance, African and Aboriginal art, exploring Rangoli patterns, and a streetdance routine. It was wonderful toexperience vivid colours and vibrantmusic throughout the week. We wish all the readers of theCambourne Crier a relaxing and funfilled Summer holiday.

As we come to the end of the schoolyear, we’re thinking about moving on.For most of us it’s all about moving upto the next year group and we havebeen busy meeting our new teachersand teaching assistants as well asexploring our new classrooms. In Year 6, we have visited our newsecondary schools and are now busyperforming our end of year pantomime,Cinderella and Rockerfella, as well asreflecting on a great year of learning. We began the year back in Septembermaking time capsules and recordingvlogs which we’ll be sharing at the endof term. We also read a range of novelsby our year group author, MichaelMorpurgo, and wrote letters in rolelinked to his novel War Horse as part ofour WW1 learning. Many of us had seenthe poppy installation at The Tower of

London, so wewere inspired tomake our ownceramic poppieswhich were firedfor us atCambourne Village College. Next, we learned about people whohave migrated to Britain. We used theNational Archives website to learn aboutpeople who arrived in Britain after WWIIon the SS Windrush and created ourown diaries based on their experiences. Then it was time for our residential tripto Hilltop Activity Centre where we facedour fears and scaled the climbing wall, sailed down the zip wire and swungthrough the tree top trail. In the New Year, we became amazingauthors and wrote extended storiesbased on Michelle Paver’s novel, Wolf

Brother. We learned how to draw andpaint landscapes with perspective, buildcomplicated electrical circuits, programin Scratch, create incredible 3-D modelsusing wire armatures and modroc andproduced our own Millionaire-stylescience quiz to test our IT and micro-organism knowledge, visited WickenFen, took part in African danceworkshops, made healthy snacks… thelist goes on. Now we’re getting ready to celebrateour 10th anniversary of The Vine Inter-Church Primary School before saying asad farewell. It’s been a great journey.

Friday 11 September, 10am - 2pm.Come and join us at Cambourne Pre-School inthe current Blue School Building. All members of the community are welcometo come along to our open day to see andcelebrate our new premises with us. Meet thestaff and find out about the sessions on offerand how these are run. With a large outdoor space and two largeindoor rooms dedicated to different age groupsas well as a shared indoor learning space,

It has been a busy end of term forCambourne Village College, with Year 7and 8 spending the last full week of theyear doing Activities Week, developingall sorts of different skills to enhancetheir ‘outstanding’ curricular learning. There was a great deal of excitementfor Year 7, the majority of whom spentthe week on the Beaumanor residentialin Leicestershire. The students took partin a wide range of activities, withparticular highlights being the canoeingand – quite literally – the high ropescourse. Many students (and someteachers!) have talked proudly aboutconquering their fears doing the highropes, abseiling and ‘Leap of Faith.’ The food also proved a hit, as did thenightly hot chocolate, and students werereluctant to return home after squeezingin two final activities on Friday. With the year group being soexhausted, the bus was far quieter onthe return journey! Year 8 had a choice of differentactivities and trips, some based here atthe College and other groups venturingfurther afield: from Cambridge and thelocal area, all the way to Belgium andNaples. On-site, some students let theirartistic skills loose, producing prints,batik paintings and clay sculptures;

others developed technical skills, making stop-motion animations andaugmenting reality; still others ‘gotcrafty’ knitting blankets for prematurebabies in Addenbrookes and raisingmoney for the neo-natal ward by bakingand icing delicious cakes. Students were encouraged to developtheir independence, with the Dramagroup developing their ownperformance of Alice in Wonderland –scripts, make-up, props and all – whichwas much enjoyed by students andparents alike on the final afternoon, alongside an impressive show by theDance group. Out of school, students were using upenergy on climbing walls and ski slopes,in swimming pools and walking throughfields. For one group, ‘being active’meant a day discovering hiddentreasures in Cambridge – do you knowwhich is the odd ball out on ClareBridge, or where to find Roundheadgraffiti in Kings College Chapel? – andan afternoon punting, with varying levelsof success, on a very busy river! All in all, it was a successful, ifsomewhat tiring, week, and we beginthe summer holidays with newfriendships formed, skills developed, fears faced and memories to treasure.
