Issue 77 August 21, 2014 Tyler Pipe, under one name or another, has been in the Tyler area for over eighty years; so to say that we have a commitment to Tyler, Lindale and Smith County in general would be an understatement. On Saturday, August the 2nd, thirty (30) Tyler Pipe Team Members got up and made their way to the pattern shop to help stuff sacs with non‐perishable food for kids and make our community a better place to live. When we arrived the East Texas Food Bank had already arranged the pallets according to plan. Tyler Pipe Team Members would grab a sac, walk past pallets of food picking up items as they passed, delivering their bags full of goodies to the end table where they were sealed, boxed and stacked. The East Texas Food Bank brought enough food that it should have taken approximately three hours to complete but thanks to the tenacity and hard work of the Tyler Pipe Team we knocked it out in just over two and a half hours. During that period of time the event coordinator Jennifer Yoder told me that we sacked, boxed, taped and stacked over 2,000 backpacks which would provide enough food for the children of Tyler Independent School District for two weeks. Volun‐ teer Team Members were treated to a good old fashion cook‐ out courtesy of Greg Simmons who you will see in these pic‐ tures working up a sweat to beneϐit our community. So remember to mention it to your significant others, and hope to see you .

For years Tyler Pipe in Tyler, Texas has had a very active Team Member Appreciation Committee. These folks volunteer their time and efforts to show our Team Members how much we appreciate all of the hard work that they put into each and every quality product that rolls out of Tyler, Texas. This month we tried something new and we think that we hit a home run. On Thursday, July the 24th Tyler Pipe hosted their very first Watermelon Day. Tyler Pipe contracted with a local farmer to bring in enough watermelon for an “all you can eat” feast. This gentleman farmer had red, orange and yellow watermelon that was sweet, juicy and all you can eat. It was a hit with our Team Members! It was so successful that we already have plans to carry on the event next year! We now have water-melon vendors standing in line for our business because not only did Tyler Pipe buy a trailer load of watermelons but our Team Members could buy their own, just in case they needed one for the road.

Tyler Pipe is an avid supporter of charitable organizations in Smith County like the Literacy Council of Tyler. On Tuesday, August the 5th a group of Tyler Pipe team Members attended the 23rd annual Corporate Spelling Bee sponsored by Tyler Morning Telegraph & Mentoring Minds. The theme this year was a night on Broadway and they had the entire auditorium decked out with a turn of the century motif. While Tyler Pipe did not enter a team this year we did purchase a table and sent a group of enthusiasts to the event to show their support.

The Literacy Council of Tyler began in 1990 as an adult basic literacy program, but quickly expanded to offer English as a second language. LCOT now offers Basic Education, GED, and ESL classes, all at no cost to the learners. If you would like to learn more about the Literacy Council of Tyler you can visit them on the web at

http://ltotyler.org/ or call 903-533-0330.

The Theme of this years spelling bee was “A Night on Broadway” complete with street sign table toppers

Did You Know… Men's Belly Size Predicts Heart Disease Clinical studies have revealed that the size of a man's belly is actually a better predictor of heart disease than general obesity. Men with central obesity (beer belly to me and you) tend to develop higher blood pressure, regardless of body mass index (BMI) than men who store fat in other areas of the body. The study undertaken by Dr Alfonso Siani and his team from the National Re-search Council in Avellino, Italy, involved more than 700 men aged 25 to 75 who were not taking blood pressure-lowering medication. The researchers measured blood glucose and insulin levels after an overnight fast, calculated BMI and took three different blood pressure readings. Abdominal circumference, a marker of central obesity, was determined by measuring the waist in relation to the hips. The study also found a relationship between belly size, age and high blood pres-sure. Moreover, the volunteers showed higher insulin levels when consuming sugary drinks. This in turn was related to higher blood pressure. Whereas body mass index has always been used as a key measure in assessing risk to heart dis-ease, it is clear that belly size correlates more closely to other well known risk factors such as LDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood glucose levels and low levels of HDL cholesterol (beneficial cholesterol). Good Reasons to Loose Weight

Weight loss lowers elevated blood pressure in overweight and obese per-sons with high blood pressure.

Weight loss lowers elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides, and to raise low levels of HDL-cholesterol in overweight and obese persons with dyslipidemia.

Weight loss lowers elevated blood glucose levels in overweight and obese persons with type 2 diabetes.
