Let’s get together for a BBQ Dinner as we welcome each other back from summer at the start of a new synagogue and school year. Come casual and comfortable.

Join us outside in the courtyard to enjoy this fun dinner with our synagogue family and friends. Following dinner, we’ll welcome Shabbat at our Kabbalat Shabbat Minyan at 6:15 p.m. or New Shabbat Service with instrumental music at 6:30 p.m.

New Shabbat Summer ServiceFriday, August 22 • 7:30 p.m.

Join us for an informal, lovely summer styled New Shabbat service, our popular and contemporary Friday night service with guitar music.

Come enjoy an upbeat Shabbat celebration of prayer, song, and insight. We use a special prayer book that includes Hebrew transliteration and English reflection.

The music is engaging and accessible and the sound of our voices joining together in prayer is stirring. Everyone is welcome!

Our next New Shabbat service will take place on September 5, following our BBQ Shabbat Dinner.

Welcome Home!

A synagogue is a Beit K’nesset, a House of Assembly. Here at Chizuk Amuno we desire to live

Jewish life together as a community of families in our synagogue home.

We want to do more than share space in a house, the building where we attend services, classes, and programs. We want to build relationships with each other through the many opportunities we have to gather in celebration and learning and at cultural and social events.

Chizuk Amuno Congregation is an inclusive and devoted synagogue family. As each of us encounter the ups and downs of our individual and family lives, through membership in our synagogue community we know we are part of a something larger. From our affiliation with Chizuk Amuno Congregation we gain inspiration, support, and home. Belonging to our synagogue family personalizes for all of us what it means to participate in the life of the Jewish people and provides us with the resources we need to live compelling and thoughtful Jewish lives.

This coming synagogue year you’ll come to see that our many programs celebrate being “@Home with our synagogue family.” This month you will receive a Program Guide presenting new

and familiar opportunities to focus on relationships within our congregation and creative experiences that can bring us together.

At summer’s end, along with all of our clergy, educators, and staff members, I’ll look forward to welcoming you home. When the Program Guide arrives, I hope you will look through its pages and explore our services, classes, programs, and activities for the coming year thinking of Chizuk Amuno Congregation as your synagogue family and planning to spend some time getting to know us better.

Shabbat Morning Services are held in the Krieger Auditorium, creating an intimate and relaxed prayer environment.

B’rukhim HaBa’im, Welcome Home Israel Travelers!

It is a great source of pride to the Congregation that so many members and students spend time in Israel. Particularly during these difficult times, we show our support and love for our homeland by visiting and letting ourselves get caught up in both the dream of Israel and its daily reality. Many members of our Chizuk Amuno community have taken trips to Israel this spring and summer. If you traveled to Israel, we hope you had a wonderful and inspiring time and we would like to hear all about your adventures. Please join us for Shabbat lunch on Saturday, August 30 following services. Observing Tisha B’Av – The Ninth of Av Collective Jewish Grief: Then and NowMonday, August 4 • 8:15 p.m.

This summer the Jewish people found unity and struggle grieving the tragic deaths of three Israeli teens, Naftali Fraenkel z”l, Gilad Sha’ar z”l, and Eyal Yifrach z”l. Subsequently, our mood and the situation in Israel became even more difficult. Before observing our people’s national day of mourning, we’ll reflect on what’s going on, what we’re feeling, and what lessons from the past can mean for today.

Tisha B’Av is our calendar’s date of mourning. At 8:30 p.m. our observance of Tisha B’Av will commence with prayer and reflection. During the Ma’ariv service, we will recite the Bible’s Book of Lamentations, Eikhah.

We will also gather in observance of Tisha B’Av on Tuesday morning, August 5 at 7 a.m. A special Minhah service will be held at 1 p.m. At this afternoon service we will wear our tallit and tefillin, ritual symbols that we will not use during our Shaharit service in expression of our mourning. Tisha B’Av is a full or partial day of fasting and introspection observed with emotion as we transform trauma into wisdom through ritual.

As we enter 5775, L’Shanah Tovah Umetukah – we wish you a Happy and Sweet Year. It is a time for fresh starts, renewed purpose. A time to look to the future. We begin our formal observance of the High Holy Days at our Erev Rosh HaShanah service, 6 p.m., Wednesday, September 24, with the Blessing of our Children. We invite adults and children of every generation to join us and participate in this timeless tradition.

Arlington Cemetery Memorial ServiceSunday, September 28 • 11 a.m.

We will gather inside the hallowed gates of our congregation’s cemetery to recite psalms, prayers, and personal memorials during the Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Yom KippurShabbat, October 3-4

Ten days after Rosh Hashanah, having considered our actions over this past year, we gather for Yom Kippur and pray to be inscribed in the Book of Life. We begin our observance of Yom Kippur with the Kol Nidre service on Friday evening, October 3, at 6 p.m.

Welcome Rabbi Marci Jacobs AronchickOur New Director of Teen and Family Engagement

We are delighted to welcome Rabbi Marci Jacobs Aronchick as our new Director of Teen and Family Engagement. Marci joins our synagogue as a part-time member of our staff this summer. Marci, her husband, Jeff, and son Shmuely, have relocated to Baltimore from New York, where she worked as Education Director at

Congregation Ansche Chesed. Marci is a graduate of Krieger Schechter Day School and was ordained as a rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2006.

As Director of Teen and Family Engagement, Marci will be supporting and expanding programs and experiences for our Young Families group, for Chizuk Amuno school families, and for our high school teens. We’re particularly excited at this opportunity to build social and cultural programming for our teens. Rabbi Aronchick will also be teaching in our school programs and immersing herself in the life our synagogue community. Welcome!

Adult Bat Mitzvah Begins This Fall

The Adult Bat Mitzvah class is a community of women that engages and then grows together in study and observance as we become more comfortable with the synagogue service, more familiar with Judaism, and more skilled in Hebrew reading and chanting. This year, class will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. beginning November 11 and will be taught by Rabbi Debi Wechsler, Robin Shulman, and the Chizuk Amuno clergy and staff. 7th Annual Summer Camp for Adults

Summer camp is not just for kids. It’s too much fun! Each year we enjoy a week of learning, great food, and excellent music.

This year’s theme, “When Dreams Come True in Music and Art,” was explored in sessions taught by Dr. Susan Vick and Ken Meltzer. Susan revealed the dreams of a selection of 18th and 19th century artists, including Auguste Renoir, Henri deToulouse Lautrec, Marc Chagall, Frida Kahlo, Diane Arbus, and Maurice Sendak. Ken presented the musical dreams of Richard Tucker, Giuseppe Verdi, and a poor villager in love with a beautiful woman in the comic opera, “l’elisir d’amore” (The Elixir of Love).

Seth Kibel (clarinet, saxophone, and flute) and Vladimir Fridman (guitar and vocals) played and sang songs from around the globe, including old favorites “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and “When You Wish upon a Star.”

Campers were presented with a tote bag embossed with our camp name and logo as a memento of the week, another wonderful camping experience.

Join other adult learners seeking a dynamic, interactive means of forging a closer link to their Jewish heritage and community. We offer the basic course as well as graduate courses and we’re accepting applications for this fall. Please call the Stulman Center for Adult Learning, ext. 288, for more information.

College OutreachEach year, our College Outreach

committee sends care packages to our Chizuk college students at holiday time. The packages include snacks, notepads, calendars, and other goodies to help nurture their connection to the synagogue.

Adopt-A-Road Sunday, September 7, 9 a.m. (Rain date September 14). Chizuk Amuno Brotherhood performs the mitzvah of shmirat adamah, protecting the earth, by cleaning a segment of Greenspring Avenue. Art with a Heart Sunday, November 9 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Art with a Heart’s mission is to enhance the lives of those in need through visual arts. Volunteers work together on art projects at Art with a Heart headquarters in Hampden. The completed projects are then exhibited in community organizations, schools, and hospitals in Baltimore.

Operation Welcome Home Maryland Join us as we welcome home our troops from military service overseas. Volunteers meet at BWI airport and help pack goodie bags, welcome and cheer for soldiers, and thank them for their service. Dates are set one to three weeks in advance of the incoming flights. Aloha Club Hatikvah!Club Hatikvah is Chizuk Amuno’s social group for

those seasoned to perfection – over the age of 50. We have six or seven Sunday evening functions throughout the year, complete with sit-down

catered dinner and exceptional entertainment. This year, our kick-off event will take place on

Sunday, September 7 at 6 p.m. Join us for a fabulous “trip” to Hawaii, complete with exciting and authentic hula dancers, food, and décor. Hula lessons and leis provided.

for a presentation entitled “The History of Jews and Chocolate” by Sheilah Kaufman, award winning author of 26 cookbooks, cooking instructor, culinary lecturer, and food editor. And a week or so later on Sunday, September 21, along with the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Gemilut Hasadim Fund, we are co-sponsoring a workshop on recognizing the signs of substance abuse. SOS Addiction (Stepping Out of the Shadows) will be presented by The Pharmacists’ Education and Advocacy Council.

This is just the beginning of a great year of programming, including bringing back our popular Tuesday morning Mah Jongg games.
