Thanks to all those who have donated to theChair Drive thus far, we were able to finally

purchase our 70 new banquet chairs. They arealmost exactly the color of the dining room

chairs and the seats are covered in a material thatwill allow us to wipe them clean, which should

increase the life of the chairs. We are also abouttwo-thirds of the way to our goal of replacing theloveseats in the Living Room and Lobby. There isstill time to help us do that (see page three for de-tails)!

Perhaps the best part about the new chairs is thatthey got here just in time for the wedding recep-tion of Club member Monica Mahaffey and herhusband Paul Otterness (pictured right) held atthe Club on Saturday, July 20th.

After a ceremony at Westminster Presby-terian Church, the wedding party pro-ceeded to the University Club, led by

bagpiper Mike Battenfeld. A deli-cious dinner in the Dining Room

was followed by a full Irishseisin in the Grille Room.

The bride joined the bandfor such traditional favor-ites as "Red is the Rose"and "Caledonia," a songpopularized by the bandCeltic Woman. The nexttime you see Monica, bes u r e t o o f f e r h e rthis popular Irish weddingtoast: "May you live aslong as you want; and neverwant as long as you live!"

bany. Join the University Club Founda-tion for Gravinas presentation on thesubject and a tasting of what he callsThe Magnificent Seventhe beers thatshaped the New York beer scene.

The University Club has a deep connec-

tion to Albanys beer-making tradition aswhen moved to our present location inApril, 1907, we purchased the home of

brewer George Amsdell, said ColleenRyan, the Clubs president. We arelooking forward to celebrating the past,

present and future of Albany, and show-casing the history that makes our cityspecial.

We continue to receive ex-cellent feedback on thechanges Chef Kevin Paganohas made to the menu. Whilemany of your old favoritesremain available, there are lots of newoptions to excite your taste buds! Alongthose lines, the Club is looking to addsome new choices to the Wine List forthe Fall and Winter seasons and weneed your help.

Join us Friday, September 6 from 6-7p.m., when the Food & Beverage Com-mittee will host a tasting of several ofthe wines under consideration to com-

plement the signature, savory tastes ofthe harvest and holiday season. Then

stay for dinner and check out JeffStrange playing in the Grille from 8-10p.m. (see page 3 for details).

Or stop by the week of September 9-13and have a taste along with your lunchor dinner. Ballots will be available atthe club and in the September newslet-ter. Votes should be cast by September13th. We will premiere the new winelist at the Uncork Autumn Harvest Buf-fet on Friday, September 27!

The Albany Distilling Company, owned by John Curtin and MatthewJager, is a modest operation, produc-ing craft spirits one small batch at atime. Its headquarters are located indowntown Albany, not far from thesite of the citys original 18th centurydistillery.

Matt Jager will join us at the club for aspecial tasting on Friday, August 16thfrom 5:30-7:00 p.m. Our OriginalAlbany rum pays homage to Albanysfirst distillery, he says. The Quack-enbush Still House produced anunaged rum from Caribbean molassesand Hudson River water, fermentedwith wild yeasts in huge, open woodenvessels. We use modern equipment,

better yeast, and a more suitable watersupply, but we follow the same recipe

and use the methods of our predeces-sors.

Bright tropical notes shine through therich, earthy flavor of the Caribbeancane, giving way to a long, creamy,

butterscotch finish. Original Albanyrum is excellent neat or on the rocks,

but also brings an exciting layer ofcharacter to cocktails. Original Albanyrum will be featured in the signaturecocktail for the event, U. Club Rum

    Punch.

There is no cost for the tasting, whichis being hosted by the Clubs Food &Beverage Committee, but we certainlyhope you will make an evening of itand join us for dinner as well. Reser-vations are required for both the tast-ing and dinner. Please let us know ifyou will attend. Call the Front Desk at518-463-1151 or, if you prefer, youcan make your reservations online at

    www.uclubevents.blogspot.com.

While Cheers, Salud and Cin Cin arecommon toasts around the world, thereare many more you can impress yourfriends with at your next cocktail partyIn Austrian, Dutch, German and SwissCheers is Prost; in Norwegian, Swed-ish and Danish it is Skl and in IrishSlinte. Then theres Gan Bei which isDrain Your Glass in Chinese; Yam

And, did you know that its said that inRussia, it is impolite to refuse bever-ages from your host and one shouldalways partake in a toast. Not drinkingis a serious handicap to doing businessin Russia! Refusing to drink is unac-ceptable unless you give a plausibleexcuse. But beware, if you find your-self intoxicated, don't sign anything!
