From the Editor

What a week it was. Wakes 2013 will now go down in the history books

as being the best, most energetic and well-supported Wakes Week for many a long year. Children for years to come will sit at their parent’s feet and listen, in rapt attention, to tales of Wakes 2013.

Praise is heaped elsewhere in this issue and the committee have roused themselves briefly with a message themselves. There is already talk of new things for 2014, so keep an eye open for the Wakes AGM and come along and give your support.

By the time you read this Tideswell Parish Council will be restored to full strength and if Litton PC’s experience is anything to go by, the future in Tideswell looks good.

It’s tempting to say “ We’ve never had it so good.” Of course all this can’t happen without people stepping up to the plate and getting involved. If you haven’t yet; what’s stopping you?

Pete Hawkins

Calendar Search

Thank you for everyone’s kind thoughts, best wishes and cards during my recent

Butty Success

Litton Village Hall Committee wishes to give a grateful thanks for the huge

support we received during our ‘Bacon Buttie’ week-end, (22 & 23 June). The total amount raised was £691.

A very sincere thanks to all those who supplied cakes, buns etc., and some generous donations: also thanks to the very many helpers, both committee members and villagers.

And thanks to those who came and enjoyed some food and chats with us. This annual event does help so much toward the up-keep and maintenance of our Village Hall.

‘Flaming Summer’This year’s competition attracted eight entrants and the judges had a very hard time judging the winners.

The winners were:-

• Best overall display – Lime Tree House, Sherwood Road

• Best individual container – Lime Tree House, Sherwood Road

• Best shop display – Tindalls

• Special prize Gibbs Butchers/ West Side, Buxton Road

Our thanks to everyone who took the trouble to enter. There were many lovely displays around the village which had not entered for judging, but we have worthy winners and hope more of you will take up the challenge next year.

Litton Wakes Night

For once the Weather Gods smiled on Litton helping to bring out the residents

of Litton, Tideswell and surrounding villages in large numbers to support the event, raising a total of £1463 for local projects.

Many thanks to E&R Country Lettings, The Red Lion and Holdsworth for their support, together with the efforts of the volunteers before, during and after the event, all of whom helped to make it such a great success for the community.

If anyone not already involved would like to join in with future events we undertake in the village, please contact me.

Foundation Plea

The Bishop Pursglove Foundation is a charity which has a small amount of

money available each year to distribute as grants to students at university or colleges of higher education (18+), to help with the cost of books or equipment relevant to their course. Grants may also be available to students in Year 13 who have to buy equipment, such as a lab coat, to prepare for and attend an interview.

The charity’s requirement is that the student’s home when not away at university is in the parish of Tideswell, Litton, Cressbrook, Millers Dale, Wheston, Wormhill or Peak Dale. The application form also asks how the grant would be spent.

If you think you may be eligible or know of someone who is, please contact Mrs Margaret Slyfield at the Old Shoe Shop in Tideswell for an application form.

Please note that completed application forms should be returned to Mrs Slyfield by September 15th for consideration at the autumn meeting.

Kitchen Garden News

In the last month the Kitchen Garden has been a hive of activity. On June 20th

we welcomed well over 50 people to the Grand Opening by Queen Zena(1949) , Queen Sophie and Princess Imogen(2013). Despite the atrocious weather, our visitors enjoyed Head Chef Joe Hunt’s BBQ with the accompanying salads made from freshly picked garden produce.

The Duke of Gloucester visited Bakewell to meet the top Peak District food and drink producers. The School of Food displayed a basket produce from the garden which included the first shallots, strawberries, rhubarb, spinach, pak choi, salad leaves and many herbs. Joe had made strawberry jam using our alpine strawberries.

As part of the Buxton Festival, Chef Joe was invited to do a demonstration in the Dome and he chose to showcase the produce of the kitchen garden. We found a great variety for him to work with, all picked a couple of hours before the demonstration. There was garlic, fennel bulb, baby carrots and spring onions, shallots, spinach, salad leaves, pea shoots, beetroot leaves, herbs and a selection of herb flowers. To read Joe’s blog go to www.chefjoehunt.wordpress.com or join the Tideswell Kitchen Garden Group on Facebook to find out what is happening.

Thanks to the wonderful weather and volunteers who have kept the garden well watered, the produce is flourishing, with onions, courgettes, peas, beans, broccoli all just about ready to harvest, and then there is all the fruit. Just come and see for yourself.

The Voice Needs You

We hope you enjoy reading The Village Voice. We have regular suppliers of

content, a loyal band of advertisers who make it all possible and a fabulous team of distributors who post copies through your door in rain, hail, snow and sun!

However, recent victims of the technological age, have been the amazing band of people who every month folded over 1250 copies of The Voice. That was before we took possession of our new printer, which folds and staples too. Our folderers were no longer needed!

New Volunteers Needed

This great technological leap forward has resulted in the need for a new breed of volunteers however - The Booklet Bundlers.

This vital role isn’t onerous. It involves taking a stint by the printer and taking the printed, folded and stapled Voices off the printer and bundling them into groups of ten and popping them into boxes. We currently have a small team but could do with half a dozen more to come forward.

Full training is given for this monthly job. You’ll have the satisfaction of doing a great job and will earn the eternal gratitude of the current VV team and, of course, you, our readers.

It takes around ten hours to print each and every copy of the Voice every month. The more volunteers we have the shorter everybody’s shift is. Please contact me on 872470 or [email protected].

A Tidza Rambler

The thought of putting on thick socks and boots on a hot day last month

didn’t appeal. I knew that other group members wouldn’t be on this walk but I had to be at the meeting point in case anyone new turned up. In vain I waited for that tall dark handsome stranger! A short walk seemed the best idea.

Unexpectedly I was soon enjoying the poetry festival in Litton, looking through a volume of poems by a lifelong resident and reading the children’s poems about what they’d like to put in their magic boxes. The old red phone box contained others. My favourite was The Difference 10p Can Make with the story of a call made from this box by the author to a young lady.

I’ve always liked the enclosed world of Cressbrook Dale and on this occasion stopped to benefit from its coolness. Lunch was on the village green in Cressbrook, always a tranquil place. It was a leisurely and enjoyable walk though it had seemed quiet without my usual companions.

Wakes 2013

So many people had been in the village on Big Sat’dy that I wondered how much

litter there’d be next morning. The Pot Market was clear, all excess rubbish having been bagged and stacked neatly by the bins before 8 a.m. Mick Dalton was his usual cheerful self and deserves our appreciation for his efforts.

Helen

On the Saturday at the end of Wakes Week, Tideswell Cricket Club runs

the car park at the Industrial Estate where visitors leave their cars. It’s nice to welcome people to the village and promise them their vehicles won’t be stolen or destroyed while they’re enjoying the procession.

We also get the hikers who have come to do some walk they’ve found in a book, starting with parking in a sleepy Peak District village. They are always amazed by how much is going on, and that’s amusing too.

Visitors are usually happy when they come back to their cars, but this year we had a particularly large number who were very complimentary about everything they’d seen. The sun coming out in good time obviously helped, but I’d like the Wakes Committee to know that their hard work was appreciated by quite a few people who’d come to Tideswell for the day.

Bob Walkden

What a fantastic Wakes Week !!! Congratulations to the new

Committee. From the Anchor down to “Tidza by the sea” the whole week had such a “buzz”. Dancing in the torchlight along side a young girl called Millie (who

knew all the steps incidentally, so tradition will carry on) to the Steel Band on Big Saturday, then Tidza Band & Punch & Judy. Wow, fantastic.

Thank you all.

Mary L

And finally a message from the Committee...

Tideswell Wakes Committee would like to say a massive THANK YOU to

all of you Tideswellians and those from surrounding villages for your support during Wakes 2013.

The week was a great success and we really couldn’t have done it without you all behind us. There were times when stress levels rose but your supportive comments and encouragement kept us going!

We are in the process of finalising our accounts but we can confirm on the street collections alone we raised an amazing £1600!!!!! We are now looking for local clubs and associations who would like a contribution so do please get in touch with us and see how we can help you!!

We will let you know the full amount we raised at our AGM meeting in September but for now we will leave you alone, stop asking you for money and let you enjoy the rest of the summer!!

Enjoy this time without us around, because before you know it, it will be Wakes Week 2014 and we will be back....because as you all know by now...WEHEARTTIDZAWAKES!

Parish Council Matters

Mostly this month the Parish Council wishes to say thank you.

Importantly, there have been many applications from public spirited individuals, who have put their names forward for co-option to the Council. The decisions will be made at the full Parish Council meeting on Monday 22nd July at 7.30pm in the Fountain Square Church Vestry.

Thanks to all the people who have given perennial plants, bedding plants and their own time to plant and water them. You have made Tideswell look beautiful.

While our Parish Clerk is on sick leave, we thank Janice Jackson, our interim Clerk for all her work and advice. We thank residents who may have waited for information from

the council during this busy time, thanking them for their patience.

Thank you all.

A full report from the new council will be published in next month’s Village Voice.

Sue Barber on behalf of Tideswell Parish Council.

WI on the cards

Miller’s Dale & District W.I. met in Litton Village Hall on Wednesday 10th. July.

Judy Cooper, our President, welcomed all members and 2 visitors. The business meeting included the date of The Autumn Federation meeting (1st. October ‘13) in Derby; also a new date for the Derby quiz, now 6th. September ‘13. The previous one in March had to be cancelled due to the snow. The members were also asked for volunteers to help with the catering during three visits to The Hall in August; this was finalised later. We were reminded that there is no meeting in August. We are also trying to arrange a Craft Day in September.

Judy then introduced the Speaker - Mr. John Firth, who gave us an excellent talk and demonstration on making cards and different methods of folding them. He

started with a short resume of how he came to be in Tideswell. He then went on to talk about greeting cards and how, just by using varying folds, they became quite different. He had many examples and ended his talk by giving us all a card to cut out and fold. We all thoroughly enjoyed this experience - with lots of chats during our folding efforts!

The next WI meeting is on September 11th. at 7.30pm in our usual venue Litton Village Hall. The Speaker is Mr. Robert Alan-Havel and his talk is entitled The Dolphin Experience.

Fashion for Diabetes

The group joined forces with Chesterfield Branch of Diabetes UK

to hold a fashion show at Masson Mill, Cromford. 4 models from each group showed the audience a range of casual and dressy clothes. The two male models won particular affection from the crowd. Thanks to all who gave their time voluntarily.

A sum of £270 per group was raised.

Both groups help people with diabetes. The Chesterfield group is mainly a fund raising group for Diabetes UK, while High Peak give practical help, support and training, as there is no dedicated Diabetes Centre.

The next meeting of High Peak group is on Monday 15th July at 7.00pm at the Buckingham Hotel, Buxton. All welcome.

Vitamin D for me!

The role of vitamin D in preventing attacks in MS is becoming increasingly

recognised. This has been highlighted by the absence of MS around the equator where there is plenty of sun to create vitamin D. So with plenty of sunlight this summer, then those of us with MS need to be rolling up our sleeves to soak up the rays. Although the recommended 10 -15 minutes of skin exposure to the sun, 3 to 5 times a week, might be possible at the moment, it might be a bit of a tall order throughout the year!

Vitamin D or sunshine might be discussed at our next get together at Vanilla Kitchen and there again it could be about anything; informality rules! Our next Get together is on Saturday 31st August at 2 pm in the Ice cream parlour at Vanilla Kitchen, Tideswell.

Cressbrook Brewstop is back

When the Mabeys bought the old apprentice house in Cressbrook in

December 2011 they promised Dave Teare they would try to re-open the Brewstop, a popular walkers café since the 1990’s. However with a large house to renovate and both in full-time work we were slightly daunted by the prospect of running a café too. However the children, Noah (14), Hattie (13) and Bea (9) put up a persuasive argument, promising to earn their own pocket money, develop an understanding of business and improve their maths skills, and now finally the Brewstop has re-opened!

The original Brewstop was in the basement of the castle-like apprentice house. We’ll have seating here once the garden is sorted, but the Brewstop has moved round the corner to the old stables. The décor

is simple with original limewashed walls, ancient woodwork and the original floor where you can still see the grooves in the floor where years of heavy horses’ hooves have worn away the floor. The Brewstop is manned mostly by the Mabey kids and other local children echoing the house’s original function as a home for the mill’s apprentice children (but with slightly better working conditions!). The Brewstop is open weekends and school holidays serving hot and cold drinks, snacks and local Peak District Dairy ice-cream from Tideswell. Everything is either local or fairtrade (apart from the drink cans). The Brewstop is accessed from the footpath running between Cressbrook Mill and the Monsal Trail. Walking boots and muddy paws are all welcome.

Litton Parish Council

Good news for residents of Litton Mill. The Council has agreed a programme

of works to improve the area around the village green. This has been made possible by the willingness of villagers to help with some of the work and residents of Litton Mill flats contributing to the costs of shared boundary work. A big thanks goes to Councillor Chris Thirtle who has worked hard to bring the programme together and who will now be managing it to completion. See your local Parish Council Notice Board for updates from Chris.

There is also good news for Cressbrook. MWH, contractors for Severn Trent Water Authority, have said they will soon be in a position to start their community work project, landscaping the village green. This is great news and a heartfelt thank you must go to former councillor Una Hill who started the project and who has continued to be involved with Councillor John Butler who is now the Council’s point of contact with MWH.

This is the time of year when residents, the churches and the school are at their busiest supporting the wonderful range of events in our Parish. Wakes events and well dressing celebrations are enjoyed by all and this year was the first Litton Poetry Festival held as part of the Buxton Arts Festival. The Parish Council extends a very warm thank you to all those people and children who gave so generously of their time and energy to make these and other events a great success for all.

The Council continues to work away at more mundane matters but all with the aim

of improving the way it works. We expected and received an audit report which was critical of the way the Council had managed its financial affairs in the recent past but as I write all the auditor’s recommendations have been implemented . We have reviewed our charges, some of which have remained the same since 2007, and adjusted them in the light of increasing costs and market rates. You can see information about these and other matters we are dealing with by looking at the minutes on the Council’s web-site at www.littonparishcouncil.co.uk

As many of you will know I took over the Chair in May this year from Gordon Rooke who had been Chair since September 2012. I would like to thank Gordon for steering the Council through a particularly difficult period and successfully appointing new Councillors and so providing a sound base for the development of the Council.

It will be August when you read this and we hope that you are all enjoying good weather and if it is the time when you go on a well deserved holiday - have a good one.

Bowl’d Over

Greetings bowling aficionados. Before we delve into the detailed & complex

statistical analysis of our latest bowling results (are you trying to put them to sleep this early? Ed.) I have to say a very big grateful thank you on behalf of TBC members for our record-breaking Rock ‘n’ Bowls night during Wakes Week. You helped us to raise the amazing sum of £1,005 net. It wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated effort of club members.

The TBC committee would like to say a special thank you to the Wakes Committee for all the hard work that they’ve done to make the week such a spectacular success.

We recently held an Open Pairs Competition charity day in aid of the Bakewell based Helen’s Trust; we raised £400.

AND now for some bowling: we’ve been confused by the excellent weather which means that we can try bowling properly instead of like last year chucking bowls across what was more like a swamp. The ‘love-lawn’ Matt has been beavering away … on the green which, because of sun & lack of rain, has developed brown patches. John Hallows has been doing some rain dances, not a pretty sight be assured, which have failed so he’s resorted to normal practice by wrestling with the water sprinklers then turning them on.

The Monday night team have played 12 matches & won 8 placing them 4th out of 11.

The Tues. night team have played 10 matches & won 6 placing them 3rd out of 7.

What a miserable night we had at Peak Dale on July 7th when it rained so hard that we had to remove Mr. & Mrs Noah from the green. There was that much fertiliser (eco-death) that we spent more time cleaning bowls than bowling. The consolation was that we all came home an inch taller.

The Thursday afternoon team have played 13 & won 9 placing them 2nd out of 12. We’re doing quite well.

In the recent Eric Simpson singles comp. yours truly was farcid* 12/2 in the final by Ken Fawcett.

Do not forget that Friday night is club night so see you on the green after 6pm.

Griff ( [email protected])

* a new word we learnt at the Star Bar quiz; farci (pronounced farcee) is French for stuffed.

Diabetic Training

The High Peak Diabetic group met recently to arrange a Training day for

people with diabetes, which will be held at the Buckingham Hotel Buxton on Sept 17th.

Anyone with an interest in diabetes is welcome to attend the meeting. There will be a registration fee of £10, as funds were raised at the Masson Mill fashion show which will subsidise the event.

Facts and Figures• The Peak District National Park

landscape is worth £426 million to the local economy.

• On an average August day, there are more visitors in the Peak District National Park than residents.

• There are 10 times more sheep living in the Peak District National Park than people.

Published online by the Peak District National Park Authority, these statistics and much more information are now available in the new State of the Park report www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/sopr

The website has been designed for residents researching Neighbourhood Plans, people setting up a new business, farmers needing agricultural data, for teachers and schoolchildren doing projects, university students, conservation and recreation groups, visitors, local politicians – in fact, anyone with an interest in the Peak District National Park.

The web-based report contains information on agriculture, business, climate change, deprivation, economy, employment, housing, industry, nature conservation, population, tourism, transport, recreation and more.

It is structured around four themes of Landscape, Welcoming (tourism and recreation), Communities and Economy, to tie in with the National Park Management Plan www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/npmp.

SARDINES WITH TOMATO, OLIVE AND PARSLEY Serves 2

Ingredients

4 fresh sardines, gutted1 ripe plum tomato2 pitted black olives2 pitted green olives1 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley2 tbsp. lemon juice1 tbsp. olive oilsalt and pepper to season

Method

Deseed and finely chop the tomato and place into a bowl. Finely chop the olives and add to the tomatoes. Pour in the oil and lemon juice, season to taste. Add the parsley, mix and season again if needed. Set to one side.

Gently press the sardines belly down onto a baking tray that has been lightly oiled. Season well with salt and pep-per and place under a very hot grill, cook until the skin is crisp and slightly charred in places.

Place the sardines in a row on a plate and scatter over the tomato and parsley salad. Serve straight away with drinks as a tapas or with crusty bread as a more substantial starter or light lunch.

Marking her retirement

Doctor Mark has decided to retire from the surgery on September 30 after 20

years. She will be sadly missed by the team at Tideswell Surgery.

We want to create a book of memories and we are asking you to look out old photographs of you and your family or written anecdotes/memorabilia and bring them to the surgery. We will scan them and let you have the originals back.

The patient participation group have agreed to organise a collection on behalf of our patients. Sealed boxes will be placed in the surgery, the post office, the parish church, Fountain Square church and the pharmacy.

On September 24, there will be an open afternoon from 2-4pm with light refreshments so friends, colleagues and patients can have a chat with her and gifts will be presented.

New PartnershipDr Kim Cooke will be forming a new partnership at Tideswell Surgery with Dr Cox and a new salaried GP, Dr Angela Parry, who will work Monday and Friday mornings and all day Wednesday and will start work on October 1st.

From August a new F2 doctor, Timothy Harrison will be starting. An F2 doctor is a fully qualified doctor who wants to be a GP. Carly has rejoined us after Maternity leave and Maria has left us to join another practice.

The surgery is closed on Monday 28 August. Our out-of hours number is 111 if you want a doctor in an emergency.

Living History

Many thanks to Nick Brelsford and Tideswell Community Players re

the performance held in Church during Wakes Week. Nick penned some of the memories we have recorded and members of the Community Players read them to the audience, a truly wonderful performance, brilliant dialogue and humour displayed most appropriately. A most enjoyable evening, well done to Nick and T.C.P. We are hoping to host another similar performance later in the year.

Our Poetry Competition closes 31st July, we will make a decision sometime in August and the winners will be notified. The results will be posted in Gratton Gardens and the next issue of V.V. Our thanks to all the poets for your time and effort.

Finally, most of the group have had their summer holidays now, so we can get back to calling on you to record your memories, we’ll be in touch soon. www.soundcloud.com/tideswell-tales or tideswelltales.wordpress.com

A Sweep’s Tale

As an archivist, you sometimes stumble upon a forgotten story from the past

you want to share. I recently found some remarkable coroner’s inquest papers relating to the shocking death of a 9-year old chimney sweep boy from Tideswell, George Hadfield. The records revealed a detailed picture of a journey taken in 1840 by three young chimney sweeps from the Tideswell home of their master sweep (William Booker) across the southerly parts of the High Peak in search of work. The journey had devastating consequences, leading to the death of 9-year old George, a daring escape and flight from justice, and banishment to the other side of the world for a despicable crime…

Together with my sister, High Peak journalist Holly Knebel, and Matlock film-maker Dave Mackie, we were moved to try and tell the tragic story of George’s life, following in the fateful footsteps of the Tideswell chimney sweeps. We ventured into the archives and out into the Peaks, aiming to weave a rich body of historical source material onto the dramatic landscape which shaped the story.

The village of Tideswell made us feel very welcome during our filming project, kindly allowing us to film at Tideswell Church (where George was buried) and the Old Bull’s Head across the road (where the inquest into his death was held). The result is a 30-minute pilot episode ‘A Sweep of the Peak’ (available to view online: http://www.peakinthepast.co.uk/) for a historical documentary series exploring the Peaks through the dark secrets of its past.

As the Village Voice goes to press, TCC are on a run of 8 consecutive wins,

which has seen them move up into 2nd place in the Yorkshire & Derbyshire 6th Division.

Five of these results have been in friendlies, and of these, two have been against Baslow. The midweek Strollers side managed just 41 in reply to Tideswell’s 101, with Greg Taylor taking 3-5 and Litton’s Ben Rooke scoring 26*; while the newly-reformed Baslow Sunday XI made 110 (Matt Jellis 5-29), a total achieved by Tideswell with 10 overs to spare.

Matt also starred when the Peak Park played at Tideswell midweek. Tideswell resident Pete Nash, playing for the visitors, hit 28* in their 113 (Ben Rooke 5-4), but with 27 needed by Tideswell off the last 5 overs, Matt hit 3 sixes, and Tideswell were home with 20 balls to spare.

The Sunday game against the Sheffield medics side Esoterix was close. Ben Rooke (40) and Dan Shirt (32) helped to post a score of 147, and then Rooke’s 5-75 limited the visitors’ reply to 138-9.

In the midweek game v Loxley side Sheffield Hitters, Ben’s brother Joe Rooke hit 68 off 39 balls, with 7 sixes, to push Tideswell to an impressive 161 off their 20 overs. The Hitters managed 101 in reply.

TCC are at home on 1, 6, 10, 17, 25 and 31 August. A key match is the one on Saturday 17th, when Norton Woodseats 2nd XI are the visitors. Norton are currently 3rd in the Y&D 6th Div.
